      @@SellswordArts The general consensus is that there is some friction between the blades. It’s not like a magnetic attraction, but they don’t also just freely slide. Hence why you never see a Jedi just run his blade up someone else’s and cut their hand off.
      However, it is technically possible since there are some scenes where a lightsaber moves across another blade, however usually the two characters are being propelled by something (like a train). So you’d just need a lot of force.

    Lightsabers don't slide along the blade, they lock at the point of contact until they're separated. You can change where the blade is "pointing" while its in contact, but you can't move the point of contact itself. It doesn't completely justify the lack of a guard, as it's better to have some more protection "just in case", but its not necessary either, not to mention that there were plenty of swords with no guard in human history.
    Another reason why a guard isn't really necessary is because there is hardly any resistance when you cut or stab with a lightsaber, so you don't need a guard to push against to make stabs more effective, and you don't really need it to protect your own fingers, cuz the only way to hurt yourself with a lightsaber is to be too clumsy to use if.
    Also, lighstaber isn't just a weapon. It's a tool. It's a symbol. Its design is just as flawed as the beliefs of those who use it.

    The lightsaber, even to Jedi, has weight. If one is not force sensitive or balanced in their mind and body, the saber will become heavier with each strike. Ultimately, the best medium-to-close weapon in Star Wars is a blaster/similar energy projectile (maybe second only to a thermal detonator and a bit of sneakiness, but you can't carry many of those). The *only* time a blaster doesn't absolutely wreck everybody is if a magic space wizard - who can see what you're about to do seconds before you do it - is in play. In which case, since lightsabers can block blaster bolts, if there are two space wizards fighting, and at least one of them has a lightsaber, then both *must* have lightsabers for there to be any semblance of a battle.
    Your mistake in this demo was not having future-sight... or a good blaster at your side.

    In universe the blades have weight to them, the crystals that power them are alive in a way so the blades have the weight of someones mind, if they have too much on their mind or are fighting against the blade it will weigh down a lot.
    Another in universe thing, yes the blades attract each other, it's a literal bind with lightsabers.

      Spinning and jumping isn't effective, no matter how fast you are. Jedis and siths are usually anthropomorphic beings whose bodies are similar (if not identical) to ours mechanically. If both combatants are equally match, the one who opens themselves with a spin is going to lose against the one who delivers fast and precise, yet not so fancy, movements.
      In regards to the "swords breaking" topic:
      Hiting hard wouldn't be necessary at all with a lightsaber since the energy does all the work for you. On the other hand, real medieval swords don't break easily. Yes, they get damaged, but it is rare for them to literally break as you see in works of fiction; they're made for the battlefield, they're expensive (not throwaway crowbars), and they're meant to handle a lot of punishment.

      Now, if your opponent is wearing full beskar plate armor (not like a Mando, but something even more protective), you're in a big disadvantage because you can't touch your own blade; you can't halfsword for more precision. In this case a smaller Lightsaber or a vibroblade would be more effective, but let's not even go there; if we're being brutally realistic, long range weapons like the blaster should be superior in most battlefield scenarios, jedi involved or not.

    "antique" (relative to the clone wars and later) lightsabers mostly had guards (from the Malechor battlefield, canonical notes about Kylo Ren's hilt, and High Republic artwork). This is because the likelihood of the Jedi/Sith coming into combat with another of similar capability was rather high. After the last big war with the Sith (and the Sith were thought to have been 100% eliminated (lol)), the Jedi pretty quickly became the attack dogs of the Republic Senate/corporate interests. They were primarily dealing with blaster-toting people/droids and untrained (in the use of the Force) people with melee weapons. The guard was no longer necessary, and they're bulky, add weight, add complexity to manufacture, and you can't hide them as well in a boot or up a sleeve (for those "diplomatic" missions). So over time, Jedi just stopped putting them on hilts (already by Dagan Gera's time (a couple hundred years before the Clone War era), they'd discarded the guard from their lightsabers). Yoda, born a few hundred years after the time of the last large war with the Sith, may have had his first lightsaber made with a guard, but components wear out over time (and weapons are sometimes lost), and so by the time of the CW, his lightsaber looked much like everyone else (no one is fully immune from peer-fashion-pressure).
    They (canonically and in the messy EU) had the technology/materials: Beskar and shielding tech to prevent normal metals from being damaged by a incoming lightsaber strike (arguably, shielding is the reason you don't see the emitters melting (otherwise, that'd be a high wear part like on plasma cutters) and why you don't actually see a lot of blades sliding down to destroy the hilt/hand). Arguably, Caleb Dume's hilt (which had a small tsuba) may have been shielded.
    That's why my lightsaber has a guard/finger rings/ side ring (might as well practice for my actual sword (a long (30") type XIV blade that I've fitted with a different hilt) while I'm playing with the fam); and my wife's and son's have a tsuba (plus, not having bruised fingers is nice).

    As for the design: i would reduce the length of the hilt so it's better suited for single handed techniques; that will provide better reach. A guard (a functional one. Looking at you, Kylo Ren) would also be nice

There is also a character that has cortosis vibroblades who fights against a Jedi with a lightsaber. The blades don't disrupt, they mearly block and withstand the lightsaber

    I know this is an old one, but from a collection of Cannon sources, lightsabers (in the Star Wars universe, not reality) have been determined to have weight (soo many sources), and to be drawn towards each other (Kanan Jarrus teaching Sabine Wren how to use the Darksaber in Rebels).
    Looking at it from a scientific view, lightsabers would be a projection of plasma, which does in fact have mass and would be drawn to itself. Plasma is highly energized gas, which considering how much energy Kyber Crystal's have in cannon makes sense (though how it would be able to be modified to work underwater then is beyond me XD)

    • @chrisdonnell7200
      @chrisdonnell7200 9 місяців тому

      Hand strikes are a common technique and can be devastating. In most cases you'll not be able to hold your sword, which obviously makes defending yourself difficult. It's why most swords made for dueling have substantial, complex guards to make hand hits difficult. But in longsword for instance, hand strike (and techniques to defend your own hands) are very important.

    The last reason to keep going after 2016: some guys are actually researching lightsaber fencing techniques on a very cool
    lightsaber replicas.
    Not a very argumented position, but i suppose lightsabers aren’t supposed to be an effective weapon. It is often mentioned that the Force, not an actual knowledge and sword mastery is what really makes a lightsaber user so effective that’s why i think it is actually a ceremonial weapon/thing that demonstrates power and wealth and not a really made to be effective weapon.
    Like katana for a samurai, not a real only melee weapon (there is more practical wakidzachi) and not really useful weapon at all (main weapon of samurai is a bow) though still an arm that is respected and that is cool so it doesn’t meant to be really practical battle weapon (don’t forget that in shintoism a sword is kind of sacral thing). And for a Jedi i suppose it can be applied to. Like he is a concentration of force and for him it makes no difference to wield a piece of wood or a lightsaber and so maybe the technology of making lighsabers is ancient, sacred and traditional, so nobody dares to change it for practical things because it is a weapon of status.
    Still don’t know not a star wars fan, am more intrested in chainsword fencing subtleties if you understand what i mean.
    Awesome content though gj guys

      You're right but you're missing something, Lightsabers were made for force users, it's why they come in different colours, the sith use them to show power. They provide an advantage that blasters can't: they can cut through nearly anything. Lightsabers are actually pretty ingenious weapons when you think about the circumstances of their creation

  • @BrujoMB

    This is cool but here is the thing. They are LIGHT sabers. Light doesn’t have mass. Cool video I love y’all’s content. I also understand the little disclaimer thing that you did at the beginning, I’ve personally always been in the weightless side so that’s it. Great content. Not a hater. Keep it up!

    • @alphastronghold715
      @alphastronghold715 2 роки тому +1

      They actually aren’t made of light nor are they sabers. Very much a misnomer, but they are A: closer to tubes of plasma and B: according to the lore, you have to actually physically push the blade through the force. Irl, these things are actually about as difficult to wield as a typical longsword if not more, weighing in at about five pounds or so.
      Do they officially have mass? This question is never answered, but they do say that it FEELS like they do when you’re using one.
