There are now a number of known health risks associated with spay and neuter in dogs: Urinary Incontinence, ACL injury, Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroid Disease to name a few. Dr Jones discusses the PROS, and CONS of spay and neuter, including some alternatives, such as partial spay and neuter. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
As a human's MD, i choose to spay my one year old Beagle with OSS procedure (hysterectomy). Considering Beagle is not a breed that prone developing many tumours (except maybe lipomas), ovarian carcinoma is so rare and 90% mamilary tumours are benign - i will keep her hormones intact while she will never got pyometra. Like you've said OH on dogs increased risk of spaying incontinence, hip dysplasia, osteosarcoma, diabetic, hypothyroid, and many other carcinomas and already proven by many studies. Recent study revealed that spay incontinence happened because of the involuntary urethral spincter got loose and all of this is because of the gonadal hormones, esp. Oestrogen disappeared. So much similarities between human and dog, because *THIS* also what exactly happened to human when their ovaries got removed, and i'm so glad there's a Vet who really shown the cons of Traditional Spaying and Castration like you.
Good to know, thank you
A dog with a partial spay developed pyometra. A dog that was spayed too early developed incontinence. A few dogs that were never neutered developed testicular cancer. These are all cases that my friend's pets have gone through. I suppose every pet will respond differently to whichever course the owners take. So many options & so much information out there. It comes down to researching for yourself & using your discernment. Thank you Veterinary Secrets for giving us options.
Good points Helen
Partial spay early. Full spay later, AFTER, the animal has received full benefits of gonad exposure.
Diet is another factor. Are you sure the testicular cancer wasn't caused by the cancerous commercial food with all the processed materials and additives?
Dear Helen, I recommend you get a hysterectomy now to prevent ovarian and uterine cancer in the future. You can also prevent brain cancer by removing your brain.
50% of cancer in all dogs. The benefits of intact outweigh the risks
Our family added 2 Lab. puppies to our home. A male & a female. They're 12 weeks old now. We'd planned to spay & neuter at about 6 mos. of age but, having listened to your advice, we'd definitely prefer to keep our kids as healthy as possibly so, spay & neuter is 'out'. Now our hunt will be on to find a doctor who can/will leave ovaries & testicles but sterilize. Here in Oregon the search is on! Thanks so very much for your channel & for being you. Blessings!
Recently saw another, older vid also about the myriad diseases/afflictions from spay and neutering. Having had 4 rescued pets who were all early neuters (and who each had resultant problems), I am very pleased to see another veterinary proponent of alternative routes, so thank you. Alot. Gives me courage and information with which to act with my future pets. 👍👍
You are such a good soul Dr Jones. Thank you for always shining a light about the truth. Your honesty is much appreciated. “Love and Light “ be with you.

So glad I saw this. My rescue gave me green light for vasectomy! I’m keeping the balls till at least 3-4 years of age
This is new to me, thank you.. this also goes the same for humans so why wouldn't it be the same for animals. I just didn't know there was a option for them.. thank you..
Wow wish I knew this a year ago
We need to get this word out !
Both my dogs are intact. 8 years old and NEVER been sick. Every time i go to the vet here in the UK for a checkup, they constantly try to scare me and push me to spay them. I don't even bother debating with them anymore, i just say no, ive made my decision, now kindly give me the bill and have a nice day
Thanks for sharing
Years ago, I never had my 4 male dogs fixed and yet they lived to the ages of 16 and 16 1/2. They were house dogs, had their yard etc. No problems. Matter of fact, I fed them Pedigree dog food as well.
Insanity is Sanity You aren’t letting them reproduce, tho, are you? I hope not
Mine bitch has never been sick. I haven't done annual injections since she was three years old. She isn't chipped - apparently vets are finding tumours around the inplant. Not surprised!!! its a foreign body.
I watch her carefully and give her all the attention while she is in season. No problems so far. Long may it continue. By the way I am in the U.K. and I had some very stuffy replies when making enquiries about a new vet for her. A case of if you won't take our advice - push off. But my present vet is lovely. He understands I will take advice on natural cures where ever possible and use Dr. Jones site for advice before taking her for treatment. He is fine with that but he is not out to make money and does treat dogs from rescue centres.
He's a lovely young man. After the rip-off merchants he is a breath of fresh air. You know what is best for your dog and its you that will have to deal with the consequences should things go wrong. So unless its deadly serious I shall be keeping my girl whole.
@@loves40dogs35 no i dont let them reproduce

And THANK YOU for being so up front with your advice for the care of your pets that are so precious to those that love them
Wow!! Dr. Another Fascinating video!! Thank you as Always!!
Keep up the great work and thank you for busting so many misconceptions.
Good information
One of my guys I rescued, was neutered in the hopes of making him less agressive. But the opposite happened and on top of his behavioural issues he has numerous food allergies, I truly believe it is connected to his neuter. On the other hand his brother littermate ,who I've had from a pup was never neutered, he is sociable and has no allergies at all. No coincidence.
Diet is also a factor, if they're on toxic commercial food instead of a raw or natural diet.
If he wasn't aggressive before neuter, there are a chance that it was because of it.
Neutering will never decrease aggression, some studies indicate the opposite

Cheers Doc, Much appreciated!
God bless Dr Andrew Jones, one a the few vet's that tell the truth. Also Dr Karen Becker on this channel again speaks the truth. I found a wonderful vet Dr Christopher Day down Oxford again tells the truth. Do your homework people.
You are the best! Please do more updated videos on this. All my dogs are intact and very healthy! I lost 3 s/n to cancer due to no hormones!!

I guess they don't live forever but I do remember this one dog we had gosh he must have been maybe four years older something and he lived a little be like almost 20 a black lab and he got his operation much later and I just wonder if that had anything to do with it you know maybe his there's you know and of course breeds I'm sure there's certain breeds and they're more likely to get certain diseases but this is so good to have you know information from a veterinarian a veterinarian and you know he's still working because he's serving people through UA-cam and helping them and I'm excited to get this new book he's written and read it not a big reader but I need to go back to reading more because that's how you learn so thanks again😊
Thank you for allowing others non-vet but informative dog parents to make educated choices which most vets don’t offer as an option or allow pt input when their service dog is already compromised! Knowledge is power! Keep posting and teaching ... and know that you are so very appreciated! Thank you!
Thanks Erin- you are most welcome!
Im going to refer to it as a partial neuter from here out. When I used vasectomy @ my Vets office ~ they froze with fearful looks & said they had no idea of such a practice?!?
Tucker is 9 months so now I search for someone in the Phoenix metro that can do it down the road. Thank you for bringing it up as an option.
My first Bernese Mountain Dog we neutered at 6 months. He had hip dysphasia and ACL. He died of cancer at 10. We now have another Bernese. He is intact at 4yo and he will stay that way. I’m a responsible pet owner and I love my fur baby and want the healthiest alternative for him. Thank you for your honesty. My vet also is very get titers instead of give boosters and asks if I want him neutered but didn’t push. I appreciate that ❤️
Thanks Dian
Check out raw diet also instead of toxic commercial food. Diet is a big factor. Your pet is only as healthy as their gut health.
My cat is intact too. I love my animals and I’ll keep them the way they are.

Interesting
Thank you, that's what I was looking for. Of course I neutered my previous female dog because that's what everybody was saying, that it's the best for your dog and I felt so responsible and mature because I did it. But now I'm not so sure any more so I decided to do my own research although the vet has already asked me if I was planning to do it.
THX
It's not easy finding a vet who performs ovary sparing spays....in Illinois, there's only one. Fortunately for me, he was only about 30 minutes away. Had my Golden "fixed" with an OSS when she was 14 months old. It costs a little more than a traditional spay, but I believe it's worth it in the long run with the host of potential medical issues she may now be able to avoid.
Good to know
if you don't mind me asking, how much did they charge you for OSS? I am trying to have an estimate. I do know it depends largely on size as well.
@@asmitakhadka4048 It was done back in 2017. I was about $60 more than a traditional spay. I want to say it cost us $385.
Our dog had OSS done at 18 months (4 years ago) and she goes through what we believe to be some type of dog depression several weeks after her "heat cycle". We think it is about the time in her cycle that she would have had pups if she would have been pregnant. For about two weeks, she mopes and barely eats, until she snaps out of it. I haven't been able to find a good solution yet. Now, our other dog, who is totally intact is picking up the same behavior and I keep wondering if we should just get them both fixed or if there is some natural hormone support we can give them.
@@SamT26 So we had OSS on our Golden back in 2017. She has had what we call "false pregnancies" about seven times since then. One of the first signs is that she begins to whine or cry, for no reason. She walks around, crying, as though she's searching for something, which is when we give her a stuffed animal to care for. While she's usually rough with a stuffed toy, shaking it and ripping it's stuffing out, during this phase, she "cares" for stuffed animals, as though they were her babies; carrying them, licking them, and having them with her at all times. We refer to them as her babies, and they are not tossed about by us, or played with whatsoever. We treat them as if they were her babies, because she's treating them as such. Typically, she lays in the middle/lower portion of our bed, but when she's going through a "false pregnancy," she finds comfort laying up at the head of the bed, between our heads, and can't settle down for the night until she has all of her babies with her. This phase can last 2-4 weeks, and we know it's over when she begins shaking the babies as tho they were toys. That's when they go into the washing machine, and are put away until the next signs of a false pregnancy. I'm not sure Golden Retrievers ever get enough food to eat, so while I've not experienced a lack of eating, your dog may find comfort in having something to care for and to mother. As for your other dog picking up on the same behaviors, perhaps they are merely experiencing a natural mothering instinct, and being best friends, they're sympathetic to one another. I wouldn't get either of them fixed just yet. Hormones are strong, and theirs may be giving them feelings they can't control. At least you recognize the signs and if you can show them extra loving during these times, I believe you'll both benefit.
❤😊 I'm good this light cuz I think it was well well worth it and then like the way then the labs in the background it's fun to watch also I'm up for having a one dog operated on I'm think I'm going to be right at 2 years old when he gets his operation I'm going to try to see if I can do the ACT about the vasectomy as opposed to the other we'll see what happens thank you enjoyed it and learned
I have 2 Scottie’s and they haven’t been neutered and they are very healthy also they don’t have any vaccines I did a lot research and I’m happy how my dogs are happy and healthy.
I can't find a vet that will do the surgery without taking it all in the all out where i live if I'm lucky i may be able to drive 3 hours away to get it done but if i can i will because i want my dog to be healthy and with us for as long as possible

I’m sorry for your loss. Losing our pets is hard. But...ummm...you do realize this man is not your personal veterinarian, right? It sounds like you are blaming him personally for your dog dying because he didn’t respond to your email. He is here giving us free general advice, yet he can not diagnose specific animals via the mail. A proper diagnosis and treatment plan requires tests and observations.
@@ronnie-being-ronnie oh Wow thank s for your reply Mr Secretary otherwise I would have died stupied without your education! Off cause my Dog was under treatment and ibservation. I have a Phd myself and merrely had a question for Dr. Jones. My advice to you keep youself bussy with more productive things than scratching where it does not itch!!
Agreed
It is immoral to neuter and spay animals. Imagine yourself in that position would you want your own reproductive organs painfully removed at a very young age? The answer is no you would not. Then don’t do it to animals. It is torture. It is unjust. It is cruel. It is evil. It is sadism. Our society has some serious problems with the way we treat animals.
The vets recommend . Sometimes pet owners don’t know
Totally agree! Humans are so brutal !
Many women undergo hysterectomy. Get a grip
how can we help the hormone flow. I have a collie, she got desexed 6 weeks ago and she has doubled in size. she has joint problems and she seems to have aged over night.
Thanks for this video, I am looking into a particular spay on my 4 year old Border collie. She is a very active sport dog, and I feel like her hormones are definitely beneficial to her.
Glad it was helpful!
Ive just had this done to my border collie, will see how it goes
Todo verdad.mi pit tiene lo que el doctor dijo😍😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you Dr. Andrew, wow that stunned all of us...you included. I could see how upset you were by the expression on your face, and the tone of your voice. Well at least thanks to you we're not going to let that happen again. Live, and learn. I'm fighting the Obesity thing with my Ashy girl, and she's on a diet. Of course she still takes your advanced K9 formula. That seems to be helping her with her hips, and itchy skin. The SPCA Spayed her when she was only 7 weeks old, before they put them up for adoption. With it affecting the pituitary gland makes you wonder if that's what caused our dogs to have such problems. May God bless you for bringing this out, I know it had to be hard on you. Blessings💝
Thanks Janice
People think neutering their animal will keep it from marking but I’ve had multiple intact boys and it’s all about proper house breaking.
Thank you so much for this information! It came at a perfect time. We have a 9 week old Golden Retriever female. I have been reading about the problems of early spay. This is our fourth Golden and 3 of them have had the problems you mentioned. All three of them were early spays. I will definitely be looking into partial spay for when she is mature and not full spay early.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for all the information . A OSS IS VERY EXPENSIVE. I just got a quote from a vet of $2300.00 . Can range from 2000.00 to 5000.00. Needless to say I'm saving up for it. Between species appropriate diets, Titers, pet insurance etc. Most people wouldn't be able to afford owning a dog. We all want to do the best for them, but like i said alot of people couldn't afford it.

@@VeterinarySecrets Awesome! I'll look forward to that!!
@@VeterinarySecrets Hello, The vet keeps telling me that my 4 month old male kitten should be neutered now as he otherwise will start spraying. I wanted to wait at least till 6 month of age but now I am wondering about the procedure and maybe even waiting longer. When a male cats keep his testicles with hormones, with the partial neutering, will he be spraying?
Studies have shown cats can spayed and neutered at a young age with no effects
What do you think about cat spayed?
I’m so confused. My dog is 3 and I’ve decided to get him neutered but I’m doing for many reasons, I want to see him live a long healthy life.
on Dachshunds, studies have found early neutering has seen increases in IDVV and now recommends doing this no earlier than 18 months , just curious if you have heard about this
I believe what this man is saying. The problem is that very, very few vets know how to perform partial spay or neuter, and are not interested in learning how. And almost all vets still repeat the same old mantra of advising conventional neutering at a young age. It seems that very few vets over the period of a 30-40 year career even make an effort to keep informed of new research developments in veterinary science. Recently, one vet I spoke to about the subject of this video actually said he thought this resistance to change was at least partly money driven.
For sure it'd be money driven... think of all the $$$ they'd not be getting due to procedures relating to cancer (diagostics, chemo, radiation, etc), patella luxation, hip and elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament damage, etc, etc, etc.... thousands and thousands of dollars worth of surgeries/treatments/medication right there!!!!
I spoke with my vet about this procedure, said it was not an option and that he'd never heard of it. I live in BC CANADA, do you know of any vets that may do this?
You are the Best Dr.Jones.Thank you for being an amazing educator. I have a male intact labrador but when we walk him on his leash, other neutored male dogs try and attack him.I read that other male neutored dogs get threatened by unneutered male dogs from the male hormone emitted.I am wondering if there is any way we can protect our lab from these neutored aggressors. Maybe there is a spray we could use to hide the male smell on our dog.Can you give me any tips?Or suggest a book you may have on this problem?Thank you.You are amazing! What would this crazy world be without gifted doctors like you.
Neutered male dogs tend to be more aggressive in general due to lack of hormones; creating insecurity. So it is not that your dog has more hormones, it is just that they have none and it messes with their mental health...even around other neutered dogs. So don’t worry about it. Just avoid neurotic dogs.
Dr.Jones what are your thoughts on "Pet Wellbeing “Young at Heart” liquid supplement" ? My dog whos 12 was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur and heart disease would this be a good option to give to him also fish oil?
Hi- I looked at the ingredients, and they don't say how much of each individual ingredient is inside- just a total mg's. The Hawthorn is good, unsure of the others, and not sure if they are the correct levels.
@@VeterinarySecrets thank you !!
It is about time that a vet advocates for our animals, rather than just the convenience of society. My wife had a hysterectomy and she was told how important ovaries are for long-term health. Of course, the same applies to all animals. Thank you!!!
True . It will cause hormone unbalanced
Totally agree! Hormones are so important for our body and also animals’, the corrupted vet medicine has been misleading us to make our animals suffering …
Exactly, the hormones are key to preventing heart disease, osteoporosis and other ailments in humans. How is this any difference for cats and dogs? Why are humans so surprised to learn that the endocrine glands and hormones are important for dogs and cats?
I really wish I would of known this was possible ,no one gave me this option !! My poor boy Peanut has been neutered and if I knew this he would still have his webbles😏 seriously it does make since ,I didn't want to neuter him ! I got so much pressure from Vet that it was healthier !! 😣 Thanks for sharing this information ,you can bet I'll be passing this on and Im going to be getting a nother Furbaby soon ,you can bet I'll be seeking this neutering !! 💓💓
Healthier for the vet's bank account. Sorry to be so cynical, but that's my opinion anymore.
This is new to the US veterinarians. I did an ovary sparing spray on my new puppy. She still has a heat cycle as and is very hormonal...but cannot get PG. My Male dog is not I am interested...don't think she has a smell. She's 2 now and has been super healthy so far.
Hello, again Dr. Jones. My fur kids are rescues. They were spayed and neutered as adult dogs. 2, 2-1/2 and 3 years of age. I like you, have had a partial spay/neuter (LOL). I am not a vet. But I know very well that I would never consider having my baby daughters' uteruses and overies removed. The need those sex hormones for normal development. Why would it be any different for animals? I feel that people showed wait until their dogs are 2 years old before spaying/neutering them. Your opinion please.
Very important show. Always great.Too bad veterinary those days is one misleading money grabbing industry.
I have an intact 1.5 year old intact female dog I am wondering what I do about, as I also have a 2 year old intact male. Being aware of the issues of early spay/neuter, I asked a vet yesterday why most vets are still encouraging early spay/neuter. His answer--it is mostly money driven.
Is it possible to do a partial spay on a chihuahua ?
Dr Jones, what about cat? Is it the same like dog?
Amazing video! I guess this applies to cats as well
I hope so. Because a friend of my friends cat. Has some series healthy issues because of being neutered.
Hi- it does apply to cats, although there is less research being done on this with cats
@@VeterinarySecrets I'd like to see more research of this being done with cats!!
Intact cats are considerably harder to live with. If you keep them indoors (which is the only reasonable option in most places) they'll generally see to it that you are as miserable as they are.
@@YSLRD my cat is intact, none of us is miserable . And I’m pretty sure he appreciates that I didn’t get him mutilated.
Rescued a 7 year old dog. Was told she was fixed. She went through a heat from hell! She was a corgi with a very furry tummy and I could see part of a scar, so I just assumed.
Heat was the hardest I've ever experienced, and I've had other female dogs go through heat early many times.
So, after her heat I scheduled a spay. She immediately was having trouble urinating. Squats and just a few drops come out. She even starts whining and trying to run away.
Her behavior also changed in a drastic way. I had been working to make her a therapy dog since she loves kids, I thought she would be perfect in a hospital setting.
She went from being curious and outgoing... to becoming afraid of mundane things. Cars, birds and almost any noise. I checked all the boxes for a depressed dog.
I wish I had known there were options. 😞
I’m so sorry to hear that
We have a 12 year Yorkie bichion mix He has these lumps- about 6 on his back We are using natural coffee paste with Chaga mushrooms. Is there something better ? Thanks we love this channel !! he does the excessive licking .
Thanks- main thing is to apply a compress if these are cysts, then topical Vitamin E
How old would you recommend a vasectomy? Walt until two years top?
I’ve been doing research on this subject and I am so happy I came across an alternative to the traditional spay.
I’m getting a chihuahua, and I want what’s best for you. So if she can keep her ovaries and benefit from the sex hormones I don’t care if I have to drive 4+ hours.
Currently only two Vets in Ireland doing OSS and Vasectomy , I don't understand why this is not more available
If you have a good relationship with your vet you can ask him if he's interested in learning how to do it
@@maximusflys
My Vet has never done an OSS but has told me he will do it , but I always felt this Procedure needed specific training to avoid possibility of Stump Pyo
Ty, ty, ty, Dr. Jones for exposing what these trendy procedures are doing to our 4 legged friends. Not new to me at all, I've lost both dogs and cats (mostly females) for cancer bc of this - they were too young anyway.... I now have the males neutered - both cats and dogs, but they were at least 1/2 years old when they got 'fixed' - hope it helps a bit.
Now, the girls are not spayed - the dog is 6, the cat is 5... and I guess we just have to put up with those hot times, and apart from what's expected from each species, the dog is so much worse than the cat btw... this dog is crazy; the cat doesn't even care about other cats lol
All the best! Cheers :)
You're welcome
So is partial spay healthy?
Thank you Dr Jones. I’ve not wanted to neutered my almost year and half shitzu and later he’s having a lot of aggression just out of the blue. I don’t know if this is hormone related and if partial would make any difference if could find a vet to do it. Appreciate any input! I’m at my wits end with aggressive behavior toward me all of a sudden
And one thing grinder hate is spaying during a coat change, they end up with terribly mating coats. If don't wll after mature the cost change has taken place
This option is excellent, but are vets trained to do it and if yes how to find them? There are no proactive vets around here (montreal) :(
Good points- few vets are yet trained in this
We were told from a breeder where we got our French Bulldog to wait until his growth plates were closed before neutering him and to have an xray done around 1 yr of age to see if they've closed. What are the pros and if any cons of this? Would love if you could do a video commenting on this issue. This was never told to us before when we purchased a female french bulldog from her 5 yrs ago. Is this a new discovery and are other people hearing it also?
If they are not closed, the bones can keep growing longer than meant too which will result in them rubbing while destroying the cartilage and joint, leading to early arthritis.
Small breed like, doesn't need xrays. A year will most definitely be closed
@@cosmicjumpgate3038 large and large breeds are the only ones that need xrays. Frenchie 9-12 months are closed
*Question: Off topic, however. You're the only person I trust to give honest opinion. My 8.9 year old female pomeranian has had BOTH sides, where kidneys are, become very enlarged, & hard. Very. This was first pointed out by vet when only one side was about 50% the size/hard compared to now, when she had to had teeth cleaned, one year ago. He said he had NO idea as to what it was. He wanted her to have surgery. I did not have the money to do so. I'm still on fixed income. Is her problem kidney disease? If so, WHAT can I do to help her? I've always appreciated your down-to-earth, candid replies, & teaching. I hope you have a wonderful week. Thank you.*
D Hoosier~ I am so sorry to hear that , I wish I had an answer for you. But I will be praying for your little pomeranian. Don't give up the faith, prayer does work.
Should brush her teeth at home . Go to another vet
What is their diet? If they are on commercial food it is a big source of disease as well because there are a lot of things in commercial food that does not belong in an animal's body. If you can slowly transition your pet to a raw diet for dogs, that may help in their recovery. Commercial food is toxic in the long term. As is ongoing booster shots when you can give the animal natural vaccines by mouth called Nosodes.
I would like to ask you about pyometra in intact females.. is it as common as what most vets say it is. It seems to be common and deadly if not found in time. I have looked at getting OSS when my girl is about 5 or 6.. she is only 6 months old currently. But wish I could leave her intact instead... but Im terrified about pyometra.. just wondering what your thoughts are about pyo and if you can shed some light on this condition that seems all too common in intact unbred females.... thanks in advance
Dogs that get a OSS can still get Pyometra
I just adopted and it was required I neutered my dog without having a choice or any say…(I couldn’t pick him up before neutering, I adopted and they sent him straight to get neutered) now I feel so bad bc he took of his stitches and now I watched this video and learn of ALL the problems he could have now. I would honestly have taken my chances with cancer and with a bit more energetic dog.
I think the cancer threat is a big fear mongering lie. A lot of cancer is caused by the commercial food full of toxic artificial processed ingredients. It's like feeding your animal McDonald's everyday. If you perhaps had him on a raw natural diet, that would help the body a lot more. Definitely look into raw diet. I switched all of my cats and their fur is so silky and their muscle definition is great.
Shelters aren't willing to risk general public ability to be responsible and put moreover dog's in the shelter.
My dog is mix of Collie and Cocker spaniel, she is 9 months old and I supposed to spay her tomorrow!!!
Is she ready for this??? She already had her first heat.
Left my rescue tomcat intact. The problems with that are his marking in the house. He is exceptionally healthy. I’ve adopted a young Tom and want to leave him intact for health reasons .Advice on mitigating the unwanted effects of this would be welcome. Also need advice on how to convince a local vet to treat them if they need it . Most veterinarians in USA won’t even see an intact animal.
I felt the same as you with my male cats and tried EVERYTHING under the sun. When all else failed they got snipped and it was honestly the Best thing I ever did. I wouldn't wait too long or they make their behavior a habit even after. My kitties were close to one year of age so I was happy they got at least that much time to let hormones develop. Probably not much help but if I got more kitties I would do it all over again. I will never own an unfixed pet again after what we went through. I honestly think they go through too much stress and anxiety with their instincts being to hunt and mate and not being able to for good reason of course and they can cause problems being under than much stress all the time. At least that's how it was with our cats.
Is recovery time reduced with tubal ligation/vasectomies?
Recovery time is quick either way, it's the stitches that prolong it
Do all vets know how to remove just the uterus and would removing the ovaries later when the dog is older be just as expensive as the hysterectomy procedure ?
If you didn't know had them spayed early is there food or nutrition that will help with horrormones ?
No. Nothing proven anyway that I’m aware of. Some vets do offer hormone restoration services that are given via injections similar to human hormone replacement.

My old dog was neutered at 9 years old. He was I. For bladder surgery to remove stones and they said he had an enlarged prostrate and should neuter him. I said yes. He later developed cushings disease and cancer which ended up taking his life at 13. Do you think removing those important hormones caused the cushings disease and the subsequent cancer? If I could go back I wouldn’t neuter him knowing what I know now.
My new female just went rough her fist heat. I am still researching before I go ahead with a spay if I do at all.
Hello, please can you advice me on spaying a three year old pumi who has had three seasons and a phantom pregnancy after the last season. She is booked into be spayed in mid May which was a reluctant decision anyway but given the potential risks offered in your video and other videos I am really concerned for her future health. I would appreciate your advice re further potential harm to her of further phantoms and what are her particular risks of leaving her intact?
😅😊
I just got this 4 month old kitten an OSS that I rescued a few weeks back. She was partially in heat at the time. 10 days later after the surgery and she is in full heat again. I don't know what to do? She is constantly bothering my male cat and keeping us awake at night. I rescued her from the streets of Puerto Vallarta and I plan on finding her a home in the USA or Canada asap. I don't think any new owner would be very happy about this. In Canada, I got my cat an OSS but she never has any signs of a heat cycle thereafter and It's been 4 years. She goes outside daily and she is fine. I am thinking my vet didn't keep the ovaries in with my cat in Canada. Will this kitten be able to go outside when she is old enough? Or do I get a full spay done? I believe animals need to go outside as well so need to make sure she won't take off while in heat. It's a difference between night and day between the 2 cats
I will opt vasectomies for my boys if I need to get them spayed. It’s the best option to maintain health. But I don’t intend to go down that path.
Not many offer this service so searching for one now would be your best bet
Hi ! Your videos are fantastic! I subscribed and had a friend of mine do the same.
Question
He is a 9 month old Male, one testickle dropped the other did not? My vet wants to neuter, what would you suggest.
Thank You!
Have a awesome day!
Ken
In this case yes- the retained testicle has a much higher incidence of cancer
@@VeterinarySecrets ok thank you for the quick reply and appreciate again all that you do. God Bless
This might be a really dumb idea, I'm not a vet, but what about having clips put on the ovarian tubes (or however it works) the way they do in humans to prevent pregnancy? Then nothing is removed but egg release is blocked?
I really appreciate this information, btw. When I adopted my Rotti/lab cross at around 13-14 years, she had just torn one ACL. The vet told me she had torn her other ACL previously. Since I've had her she has eaten chicken broth every day plus a cooked food diet (no grains, just grass fed/free ranged meat and organic vegetables) and up until last year still ran like a young dog (she is now 18 or 19 years old). I believe the chicken broth lubricated her joints and that it was the dry dog food her previous person was giving her that dried out her joints and led to the ACL tears (although she is spayed so that plays a role too, according to the above information).
I have not heard of this - concerns is about effectiveness
A healthy balanced diet plays a huge role in the prevention of disease and therapeutic restoration.
I had planned on waiting until Ruby's 2nd heat to spay but her holistic vet says after the first. She just turned one and I haven't noticed any signs of heat yet which seems odd to me. Vet says any time now. Is it possible she will or has and I will never know when it happens? Is it possible for a female to never go into heat? I still think I will wait till she's 2yrs old to spay. Did you see any instances of mammary cancer with dogs that were not spayed in your practice?
Hi- it can take later, and you will notice it. Waiting until 2 years makes sense to me
@@VeterinarySecrets Thank you for your response. That is exactly what I was hoping to hear!
Great video. We see all the same health issues with humans who have lost their ovaries/testicles. Why do vets refuse to do ovary-sparing spays?
It is still controversial in the vet world
Why is it controversial? Shouldn't vets put the health of our pets first and foremost? Can you imagine the uproar if men were castrated because vasectomies were controversial in the medical community? Thanks for informing the public.
My dachshund was spayed when she was a puppy they told me it was totally safe. Today she is 10 years old and she has been overweight for the past 5 years and nothing that I do helps her lose weight oh, I've tried the carrots, apples and cut back on her kibble, she still has not lost weight. The vet said to go from 3/8 of a cup twice a day to 1/8 of a cup twice a day I said no way I cannot cut back her food that much. She's always begging for food as if she is always starving and I don't know why. Thanks for this information❤
You are most welcome
Try meat diet avoid kibble
You need to get away from the kibble and commercial food all together and put her on a natural raw diet. The kibble is the worst garbage you can possibly feed her because of all the carbohydrates, sugars and processed chemical garbage gumming up her system. Look into raw diet for dogs, you won't regret it. It will help their system get balanced.
A teaspoon of Coconut oil works to help feel less hungry, human or doogo!
My previous male pups I kept intact since I knew for 💯 certainty I cld keep them from reproducing and I felt it was important for their health to keep them so. But now I have a female, which iv never had a female dog before so I am now researching this topic. I feel it's a necessity since they can have serious health issues if kept intact. She is only almost 6mos old rt now and this is the first Iv heard of any other options than being spayed. I was going to wait till she was at least 1yr old or so before spaying her.. but now I have more questions than I wld love ur take on. I assume she wld no longer have a heat cycle if she got a partial spay? I'm very concerned abt her being over weight in her lifetime since she's a tiny pomchi. I just want to do what is best for my dog.
If you get the ovarian sparing spay she will still have a heat cycle minus any blood or chance of getting pregnant... depending on the dog it's not usually too bad though. A lot of female dogs don't really act unusual during that time, it's more the males around them that do.
Hi Doc, my dog is 11)12 he suffered a brain injury and had his eye removed. The emergency clinic referred me to a discount vet to do the eye removal. They neutered him and I did want that to happen. His blood work was perfect prior although he has a lot of lumps here and there. I am concerned what was benign may now become cancerous. Should I be worried at his age as I live him so much and i have guilt in regards to his injury. He is doing amazing though considering it's been less than a week . Thank in advance.
He a Australian red Shepard
Why are you no longer practicing?
