Robin has been my favorite artist since I was 16! (63 now) Robin's lyrics rhyme, are meaningful, and the mood of the music relates to the message! That's one aspect of his songwriting rarely mentioned! So many great albums! Love ya, Robin! Thanks for the joy!

I have always believed Robin Trower was NEVER better than the years spent with James Dewar singing lead and playing bass. I'm not even sure the point is arguable. A sad heart when James Dewar passed (RIP) and TY for all the vocals you let us. JB, you are the man! Saw you live in Virginia Beach a year or two ago and the night was most memorable.

I am a drummer/ keyboard player who has always been a wannabe guitarist but I couldn’t seem to get past the uncomfortable pain in my fingers unfortunately. I was first introduced to Trower by my guitarist friend in the mid eighties during my long haired rock band days and when I heard Day Of The Eagle for the first time I was blown away to say the least. The power and sound of his guitar and James Dewar’s vocals were simply next level as far as I’m concerned. That song moves like a tornado when it comes in and then the break is perfect. Also, I’m really glad you mentioned the caravan to midnight album and the song Im out to get you because that was so cool and funky the way he uses an up-beat attack on the rhythm guitar part and the sound he uses is truly magical. Needless to say I bought every Trower album available at the time. So great that he is still going strong and making awesome music. Thanks for this great interview with a true master of his craft 🙏👍😎

After listening to this nice conversation between Robin and Joe, Ya know, IF I had a vintage guitar, I would have taken pictures of it, and had sent them to Robin Via internet, and ask him, "Is this one of your guitars?" I would be glad to give it to him, as I would not have had any idea where it came from down the line, and I wouldn't want a stolen instrument in my possession. And would have been GLAD to give it to him.

Wolf was the most financially successful Delta musician when he arrived in Chicago- he had stacks, a car new and expensive-clothes to the nines- and always a forward thinking business model for a Delta band. His oversized “presence” and band-leading vocals full of 200% power will never be matched in that genre- though Muddy is a man of same great power it comes off differently- Wolf mugs a bit ( scary) Muddy says it’s so ( virtuoso masculinity )- l can understand why RT loves and mentions Wolf- but Muddy has similar power expressed differently

FM was at its best when it was run by college stations and independents. As usual corporation FM screwed the whole deal up. And killed new talent. When a DJ could play new bands that they liked. You always heard new bands Like Trower, Tull or Aerosmith.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, has ever gotten a Univibe tone like Robin had on Bridge of Sighs. You can tell they recorded that song at full blown concert volume as there is so much bottom end punch when he brings up the volume on the into trill and the throbs have this singing, but subtle, feedback in them on the riff. It is one of the single greatest rock and roll guitar tones ever recorded and one I simply cannot replicate accurately. I have tried everything from a cheap Danelectro vibe to a Sabbadius that costs as much as decent guitar and still cannot get that seductive, trippy, thick and chewy vibe sound. It is incredible. Hell, Kenny Wayne Shepherd played on Ann Wilson's cover recently and used a real deal Uni-Vibe chosen from a pile of them and got nothing close to Robin's tone. Of course, there is so much more to Robin than that song, or that album, he is always a tasteful player with excellent note choice and tone. A real treasure. Great interview, Joe B.

Half the trick is a dual amp setup with the Univibe only going to one amp. That's what Robin does, at least nowadays anyway . That way the Univibe isn't all ths story if you get my drift.

I can get the same sound more or less with a Harmonic Tremolo... has the same warble. So imho, If Trower is indeed using a real univibe, then his was magical! Same with Too Rolling Stone... That same warble but faster. I don't know, I tried to nail those sounds with a drybell vibe and I cannot get it right LOL

    Hi Joe,
I've been a big fan of Robin's since Bridge of Sighs, Long Misty Days, Alethea days. In my very humble opinion Robin is one of the most gifted guitarists I've ever listened to. I'm not much into the technical side of things - the sound and style of Robin's music though is unmistakeable. Truly unique. Thanks a million for interviewing such a gifted musician and one of the greats of our time.

True story here . Almost 35 years ago now my Then pregnant wife agreed to accept my invitation to see Robin Trower band play live here in San Diego at the legendary “ Rockin Bachanal “ . During the show the music went through you as it was typical Robin ( Loud & heavy 😉) and the baby was moving & jumping all around in my wife,& she commented that our unborn daughter was Rockin out !! Fast forward to around 17-18 years later & I get a new turntable and some killer Sony stand up giant speakers & just happen to be playing Bridge of sighs when our high school daughter comes home & into my music room & says “ I don’t know how , but I know these songs “. My wife & I just look at each other & smile , then start laughing & Nicole ( daughter) says “ WHAT???” We then told her about the show from before she was born , and she lights up & says OK , maybe that was it !! Proof that our little minds can absorb things and keep those things in our grey matter for long , long periods . ….. I first heard Day of the Eagle In around 1974 , or ‘75 and became an instant fan …. Thanks Robin , & thanks Joe for posting this gem !!👍👍

Come on Joe. The Too Rolling Stoned riff you demonstrated (wrongly) has a classic hammer on the major 3rd. Also, WHY didn't you ask him some questions that haven't been asked in every previous interview? Like....why doesn't he hang out with his peers like Clapton, Page, Winwood, Beck (RIP). Lastly, you clearly haven't paid close enough attention. His picture is on the LIVE lp as well as the Long Misty Days lp. Do this, put For Earth Below on under headphones. Dim the lights and listen to the whole record though to completion, undisturbed. Get back to us on that experience. After that, do the same with Twice Removed From Yesterday as well. The tones he got on those first 3 studio LP's are simply incredible, unmatched by anyone. PS. You're now in a position to do a tour with this man. Are you gonna make that happen??

First heard of Trower skimming through a 1989 guitar magazine (cant remember the exact publication), there was a best 50, 100, or whatever, best guitarists lists. Trower was on the list. Sometime 1999, my older brother (who's got 10yrs on me) gives me a "burned" CD of RT live in New Haven, King Biscuit Flower Hour and was hooked since. Anyhow, I'm three days older than Joe B., and it's up to our generation to continue spreading the wealth of knowing and listening to the Guitar Greats ~~~ pass it on!

Joe, wow, thanks for sharing these experiences with all of us! As a guitarist, Trower has always been one of my Big 3,,, the players that were such a HUGE motivation for picking up the guitar in the first place, Jimmy Page and Frank Marino being the other two. Exposed to all through my older brother, been listening to all of those Big 3 since the late 70's, (I was about 14 or so). The thing(s) about Robin that hooked me were his tone, his phrasing, and his vibrato. There are so many examples of him "saying" more/imparting more feeling with just 2 or 3 notes than other players with a flurry of notes. You all know what I'm talking about. Search on Trower Live at New Georges, (not the FM version on YT, the audio version) and at the beginning, he just plays this little like 5 second warm up blues lick thing,,,, and you know, Robin Trower is in the building. He's one of those players that I can listen to forever, never get tired of it, always raises the hair on the back of my neck with how "cool" the result of his tone, phrasing and vibrato. Thanks again Joe, for this interview and for being such a "nerd" about guitars, equipment, players,,, all the stuff we guitarist can nerd out and drool over our entire lives.

Robin Trower is an icon…70s chick here! Bridge of Sighs is one of my all time faves! But Joe, the world had to get ready for you…hands-down you are The Rock-n-Roll Blues Badass without question! Just sayin! 🙏🏽❤️🙏🏽

Good stuff! Saw Robin at Balboa Stadium in San Diego back in the summer of 1976 at one of those huge all day concerts. It was phenomenal how many great bands you could see for 8 or 10 bucks in those days. "Power trio" doesn't even begin to cover it! What a time to be alive and young!

I last saw Robin in 2019 in Tucson Arizona. Fantastic show, he does a lot of the lead singing now. Talked to him after the show, a truly humble man, not at all ego driven. A living legend for sure.

Robin Trower is the King of poise and economy....every note counts big and gushes with soul....none of that tiresome wasted energy for him and thankfully for us!

Bridge of Sighs, one of my all-time favorites, along with the Allman Brothers Band Live at the Filmore East! It was my pleasure to see Robin live twice, years apart, at a small club in South Seattle. It's cool that Joe is also a lifelong fan!!

This definitely makes me want to crank Too Rolling Stoned after listening to this. Glad I got to see Robin Trower live, at the Doheny Blues Festival in Orange County a few years ago.

Being a life long fan of Robin Trower’s music, this was a great, down to earth interview that Joe B. hosted. Interesting info, trivia, and especially, the long over due nod to, James Dewar, Robin’s original vocalist/bassist. (Personally, for me, James Dewar, was the best one to have sang any of Robin’s songs). I saw Robin Trower in 1995, here in Maine, and I was right up the front row, total awe of Robin’s playing. Robin even acknowledge my present, being so close to the stage, he waved, smiled; something that I will never forget. Anyway, getting back to this program, I am so glad to have caught this episode, and look forward to Joe’s interviews.

Joe is such a humble guy and not only a prodigy but he has an encyclopedic knowledge of musicians & gear. He’s like those nerds that can tell you the B side of every 45 ever released and name the year, the record label, the producer, every person that performed etc. or those nerds that have photographic memories about baseball cards & statistics. He is clearly on the spectrum!

Dear Mr. Fletcher, I’ve listened to some of your own work and have especially loved Joe’s Greek Theatre concert, of which you were an integral part. Though I’m a relative newcomer in listening to blues, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. And I feel honored to meet you here today, in Joe’s comment section, expressing your appreciation for one of your early guitar heroes. As I am sure that you are a guitar hero to others today! ❤
