- In this video, I have discussed different ratings and features of Voltage Regulator IC of 78XX series with different Practical Experiments, like the variation of input and output voltage with the variable load of 12v regulator ic [7812], testing the dropout voltage of 5v regulator ic [7805] with variable input voltage etc.
I will request you to watch the complete tutorial video of voltage regulator but you can also jump to any topic by click on the following Time Stamps:
00:27 What is a Voltage Regulator?
01:04 How to identify the voltage regulator ic [output voltage]
01:54 Pinout diagram of voltage regulator ic of 7800 series
02:18 Voltage regulator circuit
03:31 Variation of input and output voltage of 12v regulator ic [7812] with the variable load
05:37 Testing dropout voltage of 5v regulator ic [lm7805] with variable input voltage
07:50 How to calculate power dissipation in regulator ic [ When heat sink should be used]
10:02 Different ratings and features of Voltage Regulator IC of 78XX series from datasheet
In this video, I have used different voltage regulator ic, 7805, 7809, 7812, 7815, 7824 of 78xx series TO220 type to explain how these regulators can be used in circuit for different applications
I have also discussed some important ratings and features of these voltage regulators with some practical experiments.
The linear voltage regulators are not so efficient but the circuit is very simple. so it is widely used in different DC power supply, 5v, 9v, 12v, 24v etc.
It better to use a heat sink with regulator ic for higher power dissipation.

This is one of the best explanations of voltage regulators using a 78XX that I have seen on UA-cam. Very well made tutorial.
Thank you...
Absolutely brilliant. Many thanks.
Welcome
Seriously, this is an excellent video; a very clear explanation. Probably the best I've seen on this topic. Thank you for posting. You should teach.
Thanks for your feedback 👍

Hi Sir good Day! I have a few questions regarding LM7824 and L7824cv what is the difference?
Good video and nice explanation, I really enjoyed it, try adding how to test the regulator to see if it is working, in all nice work

Thank you for your feedback.
Thanks, an excellent demonstration.
Welcome
good video..please tell ic 7905 series..
Your videos are wonderful. Very helpful and learning a lot. Trying to learn how to regulate a car battery voltage to a device which draws 12v. The device seems to give incorrect readings when the alternator increases the voltage to the battery above 14v. Obviously a fixed voltage regulator wouldn't work because the car battery without alternator running is only 12.8v . Goes up to 14.4v with car running and alternator on. Dropout voltage, even though being 2v, could cause the device to not function all the time if the car was not running. Correct? What is the best way to regulate a 12v or 12.8v battery input to a constant 12v output? Main reason as mentioned above is that the cars alternator gives too much voltage to the battery which in turn causes the device to give incorrect readings.
It has to do more than 12.8 or the battery cannot recharge.
best video with good and clear explanation
Thanks
nice Lesson thank you very much...
You are welcome
@@TechStudyCell im a beginner only.
If I use a 9 Volts 500 mA transformer to connect 7806 regulator to get 6 volts & connect a 6 Volt 300 mA lamp and then the output voltage remain same but input voltage becoming 7.5 volt from 13 volt peak before connecting the lamp, then is there no dropout volt inside the regulator? I'm asking because 13 volt - 6 Volt = 7 volt, but if input voltage of 13 is decreasing to 7.5 v on load then will there be no dropout?
WTF too hard to follow
Best video on these regulators. Pliz help on how to know the maximum input voltage and maximum input current.
To know the accurate rating Please refer to the datasheet of that particular IC.
+Tech StudyCell Thanx a lot
@@TechStudyCell If my output is 4.94 vdc on my L7805cv does it mean that my IC is still Good?
Thank you!
@@TechStudyCell I supplied 15vdc into the IC and the output was 4.94 does that mean the IC is still good?
@@TechStudyCell at 20vdc I get an output of 5.00vdc so does that mean my supply voltage should be 20vdc to obtain the required 5vdc? Is that correct?
The IC is from my guitar amplifier a Kustom dart 10FX
The problem that I have is that I don't get any output from the amplifier.😢 I also need to check the TDA2050 which is an amplifier IC.
Thank you
Thanks for sharing this.
Very nice explanation
How much voltage we can give in the input?
Example - if i want to convert 30 volt dc to 12 volt dc than it will work or not?
Please reply...
check the datasheet
I wish you had discussed the capacitors. Are they necessary ? What type do they need to be ?
what can assemble on one heat sink verious ic as 7805 & 7808
Can I use 7824 & 7924 to convert 30v dual(5A transformer) to 24v dual?
thanks from kuwait

You are welcome...
Can I ask? For example the input current is 2 Amp. What will be the output current. Given that your voltage input is 20V and you are using 7812?
refer to the datasheet of that particular IC.
up to 1.5 A
what happens when you drop the input voltage of L7812 below 12 volts, does it still supply 12volt ?
Please test;
find the Vout when Vin is 10 volts. Is it still 12volt or has it dropped to 10 volt?
This is a linear voltage regulator. So the output voltage will be always less than the input voltage.
@@TechStudyCell so when you give 10 volt to LM7812 it outputs 0volts
No, output should be less than 10 v
Nice video!!! Love to see when there are people like me making cool things on UA-cam!
You should try to connecting lm317 i parallel for more power!
very interesting
can i use this 12v diagram when ise use laptop charger 19v 3.43a? or i change somethings ? Thanks
This linear power supply is no so efficient so it can be used for supplying small electronic gadgets.
For Laptop, you should use SMPS power supply.
Hon.Would you mind to state minimum input voltage of 7810 and minimum input current and output current?
refer to the datasheet of that particular IC.
What the voltage of 25 volts is reduced by the voltage of 21 volts with regulator IC 7821
Hi. What is the current drop? Suppose I use 19.5 V 3.5A and use 7812 Voltage regulator. What will the current output be?

Suppose I use 12v ,2amp in 7805 then what will be the output current
Nitin Sharma ( 1 - 1.5 ) amp
I use 7810 Vin=9V, Vout=?. Thank you!
If you require 10v at output then input voltage should be greater than 12volt
Can u plzz tell why the input voltage changes with changes in the load
Rishik Kumar as your load increases, the current vs voltage ratio will load down the input power supply. The beauty of the regulator circuit is that even as the load varies, the operating voltage to your device will remain stable. I hope that this helps.

how much is the maximum input of 7812 regulator
As you give more input the for higher current rating more heat generate.. and if there is no adequate heat sink the IC will burn...
Can we give AC to this regulators...?
NO
hii can u please tell me voltage of 1uf and 0.1uf
