The drum loop was from "Night Fever." Their drummer Dennis Bryon was not available due to a family issue. The Gibbs wanted to push on, tried a few session drummers, and didn't like any of them. As the stroke of genius, they cut the tape containing a 4-bar drum pattern from "Night Fever," physically created a drum tape loop, and recorded Stayin Alive. That's why the drums sound exactly the same on both songs.
Props to Maurice Gibb! I've gained a lot of new appreciation for this song from all the people breaking it down on UA-cam. The kind of craft that made a song like this is rare indeed, and your enthusiasm and deep knowledge make it all the more satisfying to watch.
You have a pretty solid domain of the strings and frets considering your main thing is keys, and the hand position analysis to try and get the tone as close as possible is a thing many players neglect. Good job, Claudio! Keep up the good work!
This mix has _so much groove_ . I love it. I've heard this song so many times over the years and never realized how complex the composition is. I'm going to need to give the original another listen with good headphones and listen for the parts you pointed out. You have a great ear for these little details we take for granted.
Dude you freaking nailed it. And one thing you made me pay attention to was the bassline tab mystery you said at the beginning. I went back to listen to the Original session and you can hear that string rub on him transferring to different notes, amazing detail you put into your vids man. I love it all
I believe both Barry & Maurice Gibb used GUILD™ guitars & basses, when they tracked this song, "STAYIN' ALIVE" in late 1976/early 1977 at The Château d'Hérouville, France & later finished the tracks at Criteria Sound, Miami, FL. BolsaChicaRadio
Maurice played his natural ‘70’s P bass strung with flatwound strings. He played with a pick. You played with fingers and your J is strung with rounds, so you almost did the opposite to what Maurice did :)
Are you serious?!!!! So I thought it was pick at first, but then when ai tried with the pick it didn’t sound right. Have you got any links to this info? Would like to know more! Thanks, c
@@Doctormix Yes, I'm dead serious:) Bass geeks have known about this info (I'm a Synth and Bass geek). The bass tone is a classic example of "Precision + flats + pick" (the bass was DI'd). Maurice almost exclusively played an ash body natural P bass between '74 and '78 (i.e., on Main Course, Children Of the World, and Saturday Night Fever). He exclusively played with a pick and used flatwound strings in the 60's and 70's (because Sir Paul was his bass hero). Bits of information are scattered on the Internet. Here are two interesting pieces. 1) www.soundonsound.com/techniques/classic-tracks-bee-gees-stayin-alive 2) www.talkbass.com/threads/maurice-gibbs-bass-on-the-1st-version-of-stayin-alive.1436241/ Cheers!
Oh my God, the theme of recording bass parts is my favorite. I can talk for a long time about bass guitar and bass lines. But in my opinion, the main one in the bass line is the EGGS, lol
Another option is to Play the bass with a a pick using a technique called ´palm mute ´. So it could have been played in the lowest part of the fingerboard. I don’t now..
Hey Doc, not sure if anyone has replied regarding the bass tone, but you can clearly see in this video performance, Maurice is playing in the higher position - ua-cam.com/video/EqjJQW3mca0/v-deo.html - and he's also using a pick with a little palm muting going on. He's playing a short scale here, so the tone is a little different to the studio version from the 70s, but these are subtle differences. So yeah, you've basically nailed it! Interestingly, some comments on other videos about the simplicity of the part - with Maurice being part of a three-part harmony, it had to be simple and funky. Kudos.
Hi Doctor Mix: 2:45 P-Bass, flatwounds - maybe LaBella Deep Talking, pick over neck joint, tube preamp, perhaps just a bit of compression. You're welcome! 😉 I agree with the melody being played in the 5-8 fret area. This was the source where I did my examination. ua-cam.com/video/01u-XnOlYOQ/v-deo.html Nasal? I think of it rather as double bass-like specially by P-Bass flats combination. Goes well with the sharp toned drumkit + acoustic gits here.
Hey Claudio, imagine being the bass player in the original recording session, all those elements coming together, creating what has become a classic. Great re-creation buddy. I bet you had a bigger grin than usual when you played the final mix but did you put the false teeth in and sing falsetto? Come on,admit you did lol😂just don't get the high waisters out of the wardrobe 😂😂😂
soyy Maestro Claudio, bajista no soy, ahi no puedo opinar, pero suena bien chevere ese bajo, limpiecito, sin ruido ni tierra, y pasado por ese preamp pues, suena mejor aun , y eso sin añadir efectos
Oh you mean in the original track? I’m sure they’ve touched some eq for the low end at some point during the process. I have only boosted a couple of dBs in mastering, narrow eq around 50Hz, on the mono portion of the mix.
Whatever happened to “fair use for educational purposes”? It’s not like anyone is gonna listen to your video in preference to listening to the real thing. Your analysis is purely educational.
Jazz bass is the business. Never understood the popularity of the precision bass. Jazz is more versatile and has a better tone. You’re a decent enough bass player Claudio. Did you play the funky rhythm guitars and the groovy main guitar riff too?
Hi Doctor Mix! Would be interested in participating in a video with Streaky? (a mastering engineer and owner of the YT channel Streaky) He´s looking for artists/engineers/producers to make a video with and I think it would be a great partnership between the two of you. Either way, great video! 😁👌
If even Claudio picks up a real (not the best - in his own words) bass - then you have evidence that there is simply no good way to synthesize it. I wonder why there is no Swamp guitar or bass (yet).
This bassline doesn't sound like much on its own but as soon as you hear it in the mix it's total magic! This song is such a classic.
Definitely sounds to my ears: Rickenbacker/neck pickup/flatwounds strings/pick near the neck.
With a little work, this could be a hit someday ...
😂

Stellar bass line from the great Maurice Gibb. Outstanding genius and bass player of all time
You're f--king brilliant. Your analysis and playing of the baseline has more life than the original.

I did notice what you did with building the parts in the arrangment- so genius!
I'm Brazilian, and I absolutely loved your work!
The bass alone, is epic. It's a good looking instrument.
You better play that BASS!
But that guitar is so funky. Can't wait for the guitar video!

Hi from Austin Texas Dr Mix is "Working with it..."
Quel groove Docteur Mix !!!
How far will you push your undeniable talent ???
I've always lived above my possibilities, correct :)
Hello Dr. MIX, you are truly a wonderful musician. Could you please play the bass parts on the keyboard. Will highly appreciate. thank you.
You should Play more often that bass to us, the sound is soooo coool . Peace ✌️
Yes Yes Yes! 🕺🏻
I love what you’re doing.... what about making You spin me round from Dead or Alive?
Great break down. Never thought to play it up there - i think it does sound better ...though you do need to scramble for the low F, LOL.
Delightful !
You are amazing
Rickenbacker 4001 on Staying Alive I think.

wow i didn't know that you are a great bass player to , good job man ;-)

I reallly appreciate
Are there no studio recordings (or live events?) of the Bee Gees showing the bass player playing?

It's clear to me that the original bass line was playing with a pick exacly where you explain, at the end of the neck.
Nice videoo, ur a master, do u listened "Human sadness" from The Voidz? . It could be a good video reaction hehe
That track is nuts!
@@Doctormix Hehe i knew you could like some Voidz artifact
That first part I would have played down near the nut, so it doesn't get the squeal from the big finger slide down to the low F.

Maybe Lee Sklar will chime in on hand positions.
Yeah, he definitely could!
☺️
maybe some sort of EQ was used to bring out the richness of the bass perhaps? 🐱
Nope! Flat. And a touch of CLA-76

As I understand it, the Bee Gees were fiercely protective of their music. Hopefully it doesn't come to bite you in the backside.
