It should be safe if people stay seated. I am been on this ride lots of times in the past. I felt safe.

I was on the Thorpe Park version of this literally 2 weeks ago, this looks safer than the one I went one, but I cannot see how someone could die from this unless they did not follow the instructions.
LiquidHill I was thinking that. perhaps the poor young girl was standing up, perhaps messing with phones or camera? a tragic accident that I'm sure more will come to light on.

SarahYork when she first died, her classmates and teacher said she hit her head, it wasn't until recently they found that wasn't the case.....smart arse.
it's tragic that a girl died but at the end of the day it's not Drayton manors fault. If the girl can't follow rules then things like this happen.

With all due respect, she had to have been standing on the seat, there is no possible way she could have fell off standing on the floor of the boat, the sides and seats are too high, it's her own fault not the parks

Jenna Gym channel she was on a school trip and with a couple of frnds . after she fell down nobody was able to jump into the water or evn pul her the force of the water pulled her and allegedly made he drown . 😷

This is one of my favourite rides at Drayton Manor, its so fun and relaxing (apart from when you get bumped quite heavily xD)

Kadie DaSavage me, she stood up just as the raft hit a rock and she fell into the water and either drowned or got crushed, very brutal either way
she didnt want to enjoy the ride she was messing about
Having seen similar rides when drained of water, it wasn't difficult to see how someone could be seriously injured or die if they fell in. The channel that the rafts float in is not smooth like a swimming pool, it has many underwater obstructions to create that
rapids effect and injure people yet nothing on the sides for them to grab hold of and save
themselves, and at the end is a brutal mechanical conveyor to lift the rafts back up to the starting point.
I sincerely hope that this poor girl didn't suffer, but if you are unfortunate enough to fall in, drowning would be the least of your worries.
If you did somehow fall in what could you do about it?
these boats weigh a ton and are very easily capable of crushing people, also the currents can be overpowering if you fell in or if you are really unlucky, get eaten up by the mechanics of the ride, its rare but it happens, disney have a list of fatalities over the years including one of a staff member being crushed by a set piece
I went to Drayton Manor yesterday and this ride isn't there anymore because of the accident. It was so sad. R.I.P

I was about 4 when i went on this in primary school and the teachers got stuck
I loved this ride! I went on it with my friends and we got soaking shoes.
I'm just checking up on all the Drayton rides because we're going as a class soon. I'm not a big rides person so I'm seeing which ones I wanna go on lol
most of the rides are fast but you can always go into Tomas land lol

This was spooky. It was just me and my mate in this big lake and were you go past those woods me and my mate just got stuck there for ages and then we stupidly freaked out at the weird statue - zombie thing at the side... >.< Then getting squirted at the end of the tunnel was great... -__-
The girl stood up toppled over and hit her head as she fell out the boat, she died on arrival at hospital. There was a teacher in the boat with the children who were on a school trip. R I P , this is every parents worst nightmare when releasing your child into the care of others on a trip away from school. 😥

HopefulShadow The ride certainly does advise to remain seated, I can only imagine a child having fun with her friends made a huge mistake and paid the ultimate price.

omg i went on this and the boat thing got stuck on the rocks so we were slanted, Nd we nearly fell out!
Shocked somebody died on this, and if she fell in the water, I would have jumped in and saved her, the water is about 4 feet deep and not particularly rough. Did they notice she fell in?
Crush injuries against the walls I imagine. If you look a the canyon if you fall theres nowhere to swim or move off too.

CM DELL the rapids dragged her along, you cannot fight rapids they take you and carry you. And staff said she must of been in the water for some time.

In my opinion the ride should not be closed!!! I know people will hate but this ride is safe and a 11 yr old passed from standing up (eventhough it says not to) one of my childhood rides gone!

It's so sad that someone so young has lost their life in such an avoidable way. This ride seems so tame compared to some of the other ones.
I would say that it's pretty well impossible for one of these to over turn so if everyone were strapped in to their seats in theory this tragedy could have been avoided.
I worked as a maintenance engineer for Merlins Magicland in Cornwall and over that time I saw the necessity to increase safety measures on several occasions as kids were becomming more and more dareing in their behaviour as the years rolled by. Sometimes members of a tour group can show off to oneanother and be less cautious than they would be with their families and then things can get out of hand.

The chances are high depending on where you fall from, at a certain part the current gets rough and if you fall from there the water may knock you against the wall and not only drown you but you could get crushed

should have steps built into the side walls with a rope where someone can pull themselves out as a safety precaution after the tragic accident

No, seatbelts and floating craft don't mix well
hmm, don't know about that. There is one at Kings Island in Ohio that has seatbelts. Only one click and out. Seems like something that should have been in this, and it would have prevented someone from falling out.

me and my friends went on this and we were dissapointed, we wanted to get soaked! We thought storm force 10 was the slow one so we told a bunch of our teachers to go on that lol. but some goody goody told them that it was the scary ride... But anyway splash canyon isn't really that good.
I'm gonna say it has guardian/kid fault for this. How can you fall in and die from this ride out of all the none child rides this has to be most safe one. Very sad though and I feel sorry for the parents of the child and Drayton Manor this could be very damaging even though I feel like it may not be their fault.

Not sure, I've not read anything about it since the day it happened and from the news they never released that information. Regardless teacher or not the kid shouldn't be standing up.

Well, there's no way the girl could have died if she was following the basic safety instruction of "To stay in your seat at all times". Either way, rip
4 adults were killed on the similar Thunder Rapids Ride at Dreamworld in Australia last year, all were seated and following safety instructions.
Except the whole fucking raft flipped on that occasion and isn't a comparison to this incident so why even mention it?
Loads of people do it all the time, if they were more strict about moving seats it probably wouldn't happen.

think of it like this when you go to a pool even the shallow end has a ladder for an easy escape, no?
there are usually also lifeguards at hand if something were to go wrong no?

I say ladders and safety inspector and instantly I'm blaming people?
I'm sure other rides were open previously and been used for years before others died on them too?..... cough cough ... hydro.
But you wanna speculate on the matter
(1) medical emergency (2) as you say stood up acted a fool (3) might have been wearing gloves, lost grip etc.
(4) the boat could've bumped too hard too fast sent her flying into any of the concrete objects there
(5) the boat could have spun fast enough to cause you to get dizzy/faint.
(6)had an argument with on board passenger, passenger throws out girl

you go in the rapids and can't reach the top well good luck hopefully someone sees you.......oh and theme parks should always expect the worst.....they get paid enough so they should think about it.

Drayton Manor is a fabulous park, this was just an extremely unfortunate incident caused by someone not following safety guidelines. It's hardly the park's fault.
She choose to stand up and try and swap seats with her friends, when they people in that ride tell you not to stand up before sending your boat off and they have loads of signs around the ride saying don’t stand up. It isn’t dangerous if you stick to the rules
