How Do Aircraft Carriers Handle Rogue Waves?
Aircraft carriers are so large, that they actually do better in a storm than most ships. The flight deck of an aircraft carrier is around 60 or 70 feet above the water. Not many waves break over the bow of a carrier. But those destroyers and cruisers are burying the bow in rough seas on a regular basis. By regular I don’t mean every week or even every month. But they’ll hit weather like that several times during a deployment, and spend the day or night getting the bow washed over.
The mass of an Aircraft Carrier is so great, even a Tsunami off the coast of Japan would have to be many times the height of the ship itself to upend it, or even flip the ship side-to-side.
Even when waves are higher than the level of the flight deck, what doesn’t pass under the ship (and lift it higher) simply washes over the deck, wasting its kinetic force on anything loose above the flight-deck elevation. Heavy sea conditions can also cause tilting, side-to-side or fore-to-aft. The size and mass of an aircraft carrier, though, tends to minimize tilting in anything other than extreme conditions.
A rogue wave is between 60 and 100 ft. A US Nimitz class carrier’s flight deck is around 60 ft above the water. Carriers, or any ship, handle waves of any significance by turning into them, hitting them head-on.
A carrier’s flight deck sticks out in front of the “V” of the bow and waves that reach this point strike the deck with tremendous force, turning into a mist that carries over the front of the flight deck.
