This is the most popular Christmas song in Finland. The lyrics are amazingly beautiful. Topelius travelled to Italy and was longing home to Finland and sat at a cafe when he saw a bird in a small cage that did not sing. The bird is in Latin Sylvia, so he wrote about this bird who didn't sing. It was not a Christmas song at first but became one of the most popular song during Christmas. There is also an amazing video when Jarkko Ahola sings this in finnish in a Christmas concert a few years ago, well worth watching. It is Jarkko Ahola Sylvian joululaulu.
Sylvia birds migrate between Italy and Finland. Sylvia's were sometimes captured in cages in Italy for food, they were blinded and their sad singing lured other Sylvia's, and people captured them too. In this song the spouse of the captured Sylvia is listening her singing in her cage, thinking about how beautiful Italy is, but missing Finland. Finally the captured bird goes silent. Very tragic song. This song is thought to tell in part about Finland wanting to be independent from Russia. It was made in 1853.
Beautiful reaction to a beautiful song. Jarkko has published several Christmas albums and his solo Christmas church concert tour is very popular. The guitar solo is by Erkka Korhonen. Jarkko does play guitar (and bass, drums, keyboards) but leaves the solos usually to others and focuses on vocals.
Yeeees, Jarkko has a beautiful phenomenal voice - my favourite ❤️it's a pleasure to watch again another reaction in UA-cam. Jarkko is worth it, simply. Personally I prefer a version in Finnish "Sylvian joululaulu".
Try other songs from this album too. As a father you would probably like my favorite song "Home For Christmas" too. Singer in that one is Tony Kakko, lead singer of Sonata Arctica.
This Ragnarök Juletide is a part of the now phenomenon in Finland called Raskasta joulua or Heavy Christmas. Erkka Korhonen, the guitarist started this whole thing back in 2004. Nearly 10 yrs they did club shows and i absolutely loved them (I discovered them in 2008). Small, tight, hot venues, guys performing on stage as being a little tipsy. 🤣 Then it got bigger, more and more albums was released, foreign singers added, and now they fill big venues like ice halls. Some folks love them, some absolutely hate. I saw them this year for my 11th time when they celebrated their 15th anniversary at a sold out show at Finland's largest indoors arena. Two dvd's is published featuring the entire show from different years and venues, latest is the show on this big arena from 2017. Finland's main tv channel Yle has been showing them on prime time at Christmas eve for a few years now. Btw. I do think this one isn't even the best vocal version of the song; there are even more epic and heavier ones done by them sung in finnish. 🤣
Heavy Christmas concept is a legend in Finland. Jarkko just published an epic live music video of White Christmas, with Uriah Heep Bernie Sanders from Heavy Christmas tour. ua-cam.com/video/DOY87SsHumE/v-deo.html It's first time in years that he managed to squeeze in Heavy Christmas gigs as his solo tours keeps him busy and he is truly enjoying Heavy Christmas you can tell!
I have strong feeling that the solo guitarist here is finnish session guitarist Tuomas Wäinölä. He has been on this "Raskasta Joulua-project from beginning along with another guitarist and founder of the project Erkka Korhonen.
@@ApocalypseRider its magnificent solo for sure, both guys are superb quitarists. Topelius would be surpriced to hear this version of the song. I respect traditions and the finnish version is the one and only original but this English version is made beautifully and respects the original message and feeling of the song.
Not 100% sure of this but the album booklet says it's Tuomas on lead guitar in this one (most of the songs it is Erkka) and he has brilliantly done the solo live for many years and tours - so I would guess it is Tuomas Wäinölä
Saw your reaction to Jinjer: Teacher, Teacher. Another good band from Napalm Records is Unleash the Archers. The album with their song Awakening on it, it is amazing...the album tells an epic story and Brittnay's vocals are incredible and very powerful.
Also, if you live in the states. Rage Against the Machine is getting back together, their songs are going to have an interesting impact on US political discord. Because so many people haven't heard of them from these last two generations. Plus their style of music is going to grab some many people. Would love to see you do reactions to some of their songs. Wake UP! Take the Power Back Renegades of Funk Killing in the Name Of Bulls on Parade Those are some of their songs more people need to hear.
For another reaction I recommend to check out Ahola performing Nessun Dorma on a Finnish TV Show Tähdet Tähdet. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/GtcI3yxvq0w/v-deo.html

It's Erkka according to credits of this song
@@ecowarriorprincessx Ok. Then I was wrong.I haven't read the credits, I just remembered that it could be Tuomas in this song.

Haven't check who is playing, but Jarkko is a very good guitarist.
It is Erkka Korhonen doing the quitar solo
