IMHO this is the best combination of new and old style emergency lighting (LED technology using a conventional rotator) because you get a low amperage LED light with a traditional rotator. That unique 'pop flash' those old rotating lights gave off is something you can't get using stationary LED lights.

Still can't get with an LED rotator either. You can just get a Xenon with the same efficiency as LED but much better spectrum output.

plius i have seen led flashers, amber, in front of the dawn sunlight and the flashers were still visible even in the blinding dawn !!! so i second what youre saying.

@@KandiKlover What I meant was, this is the closest you're gonna get to an old school halogen rotating light. The Federal Signal SLR comes very close to replicating the appearance of old halogen rotating lights but it still costs way, Way, WAY too much. The SLR is extortionately expensive, which means most agencies will never buy them and I don't know how well they hold up over time. I had the chance to buy a tri-color single pod dash light on Ebay last year (amber/red/blue with a clear outer dome). My collection only includes older rotating dash lights but I thought I might add a single pod SLR dash light but the price was so insanely high I passed on it.

I'd love to see these in red/clear/blue with magnetic mounts and car plugs, or even made larger like the old Federal CJ184s. Rotating beacons need to make a comeback, and the SLR LEDs are perfect!

The issue is that they are not low profile, and cannot be as low profile as a static LED lighthead due to their inherit design. I agree they are eye catching but the trend is not towards bigger and bulkier lightheads while everything else is going for smaller and thinner.

Agree ! We need for Europe magnetic beacons (with lighter plug), with clear dome and switch, to choose between amber and blue colour.

This needs to be made in a mag-mount multi-color (R/B/W) version for use by law enforcement in unmarked/personal cars, or even red/white for volunteer firefighters! I imagine it could even have a stepping flood light function, with a remote control on the plug-in power cord!

This single color pod costs around $500 so you can only imagine how much they'd get for a multi-colored version mag-mount. It would probably be in the $700 range. I'll just keep using my $50 halogen tear drop light. They draw more amperage (4+ amps) and they get quite hot but I can't afford what Federal Signal charges for this SLR light.

  • @greenrefrigerator

Federal Signal's website says this light costs $520. I know this is the latest technology but *$520*? Christ almighty. I'll just keep using my old halogen rotating dash light. Just bought a NOS teardrop for $65 and I have to say it works FANTASTIC and my god is it ever BRIGHT. It draws more amperage but doesn't cost five-hundred goddamn dollars.

    • @greenrefrigerator
      @greenrefrigerator 5 років тому +5

@reverse thrust Sorry for the late reply but the NOS halogen teardrop light I bought is an SVP-1166. I had one in the early 1980's and it was a fantastic light. You have to be careful though because STAR took over the old SVP product line and continued making this under the same model number but they cheapened it considerably by redesigning it and changing all the former metal components to PLASTIC but you can still buy used or NOS SVP-1166 teardrop lights and they are really good halogen revolving lights.
I actually have an extra SVP-1166 with an amber lens in perfect condition I'm selling for $50 + $8 shipping. You can find them cheaper on Ebay but they aren't in near as good condition as the one I'm selling. I bought it on Ebay and almost immediately saw another one for an even better deal so I ended up with two identical SVP-1166 halogen teardrop revolving lights. I was gonna just keep it as a spare but realized that's kinda silly so I've decided to go head and sell it.

@@greenrefrigerator I have a couple SVP 1166 tear drop lights and several Federal Signal Fireball tear drop's and, in my opinion, the 1166 is just as bright as the Fireball but I prefer the Fireball to the 1166 because its a tad smaller but if you told me I HAD to use the 1166 it wouldn't bother me in the least because they're great lights. I wanted to buy one of these SLR led lights as well but the cost is just plain ludicrous and like you, I continued using one of my old halogen tear drops. The SLR just isn't worth the price.

I know this video is over 5 years old now, but I'd still love to get my hands on one of these if they were offered in blue, since the full size lightbars are ridiculously expensive still. I agree with others below, that it should be available as a magnet mount with a cig plug. It definitely wouldn't be difficult to do. I also second the takedown/scene lighting feature, that would be cool to see in a single light like this too. I get that the market doesn't exactly favor things like this, but FS is still making beacons, so it's not like the market for different colors for this particular beacon is nonexistent... I for one would certainly buy one if offered.

75-90 rpm is optimal. Any faster you lose the pop-flash effect.

Unfortunately, these are not as bright as other options. It is obvious in this video how small the reflector is compared to other rotating lights. Sorry, these are way too expensive and are not that great.

  • @BillyRiff-RAF

Far, far too expensive. I'll stick with a halogen until these come down to a sensible price. I mean it's old technology now.

These lights are useless off axis meaning above or below the line of sight on the focused reflector. I know because i have the full size version and if your not level with the sweep of the reflector it is useless. This light was a great idea that was poorly executed. Federal needs to figure out how to get a wider more effective beam pattern. The whole idea of the solaris design is flawed as reflected light is never as bright as direct light. Take a look at precos rotator led it blows this light away.

I know what you mean about off axis view but could it be fixed with a different lens the split the beam up to a wider pattern. Say 30° instead of the typical led 10°? It would help widen the viewing pattern so it would be seen better from different angles.

You are correct. On high vehicles like fire trucks, SLR platform gives off poor light because the reflectors are only bright on eye level anything above or off access doesn’t produce a bright punch. For this reason FDNY no longer uses Vision SLR on their engines and trucks. All new replacements this year have switched to mini Navigators and mostly Whelen bars.
