“Not everything will stay important forever”. Thank you for that thought!! I’ve got to use that for a mind shift. Too much of my “childhood stuff” is still here...and I’m over 70! Time to go through some boxes.
I have a frustratingly high tolerance for living in clutter beyond the point where I am comfy. It's exhausting and it never fails to surprise me that it's the room that I least want to spend time being in 😅
Do what i did, start with decluttering your bedroom. Even if the rest of the house is a disaster... At least you have a peaceful haven to end the day in. And start the next day in!
OMG! The No. 2 "No harm" point! That is exactly my husband! "It's not doing any harm" he says and I countered it with "but what positive thing is it actually doing?". And it is doing harm; to my ability to relax, to my mind and why is it taking up space that something useful could occupy? 😠 You can tell it's a major bugbear for me.....
"Not everything will stay important forever! " Yes!" Absolutely true! And some of us take longer than others to see this. That's why it is ok to keep things for a while, and do several "rounds" of decluttering. Things that once were essential in our minds, sometimes become clutter when we prove to ourselves that we don't use them or need them, or even THINK about them, except when we are decluttering, and they pop up again.
My grandchild who is 16 was amused that I had their Dora The Explorer slippers from when they first started to walk. "I know you love me, Nana",said Clara, "You don't need to keep them!" .😍
The film labyrinth is the perfect metafore! I often feel like a junk lady from the film with all my clutter. It's a mental and physical burden. I love that film. ♥️
My favorite film and great video. My problem has been that I can’t afford to replace if I let it go. But your video helped me get past this. I have saved this video so I can replay and remind!! ❤❤
We are decluttering now in our house and I've been finding it hard to let things go. But one thing that keeps me at least chipping away at it is the realization that even when I get rid of bins of things...I will still have what is truly important to me and that we can then have more space for life to take place.
Ha ha. I have a recent funny example. I think I had that cake frosting kit thing for over a decade. Never used it. Kept forgetting I had it until I was trying to do a project requiring a lot of wood filler. My big idea was to use the frosting thing for it. So I found it and then realized half the little bits didn’t even fit it. 😅😅 Later at the store they had one for $1.25. Of course I know I could also just use a baggie and cut a hole in it. Mind blowing how it just sat there and I never even tried to use it even once. So yah. Out it went. Lol. For the most part, I’m happy with how things are now going tho. I think I’m either at or near my “click point.” Lol.
@@HowToGYST Ha ha. IKR. And thanks! 😬 That one just seemed so absurd to me. I wonder wth I was thinking. 😅😅 This vid was great tho. Inspired me to focus on stuff like that just laying around over the entire house. So now I’ve got a few more things in mind to get rid of. Like do an overall sweep that is only about that kind of stuff. I think there’s a lot more to that tho. A lot of that kind of thing really also can have a lot to do with indecision issues, decision fatigue etc. Like idk wth to do with this or just being aimless about some things...(like who am I? Do I like it this way or that way? I don’t have this skill set but I want to learn, so what’s the best tool/product for it? So instead of testing the items and choosing the best one to keep, we just keep all of the stuff that can do the same thing. And so on. Sometimes those are the hardest questions to answer) so imma just walk away and not deal with it at all. And yet that’s a decision as well. We have just then passively decided to keep it by default. For me so much tho. Almost like being afraid to make a concrete decision as if I can’t quite trust myself to make a good, informed choice. A lot more to do with “but what if I’m wrong and make a bad choice?” I think these things run very deep tho. I can trace that all the way back to my abusive childhood tho. Like dont eff up. If you do, there will be hell to pay. And so on with the left over inner critic...which deep down says to me “you couldn’t make a good choice if your life depended on it.” So there’s that. Sorry so long but the subject does poke at these kinds of issues. Such as why do I have such difficulty with decision making tho? And it’s a big fat question that badly needs to be addressed. Like my head knows full well (when people control you so much and for so long that you get so used to defaulting on a lot of necessary decision making and you are conditioned to constantly avoid ever seizing the reins of your own life and really taking charge as if it’s so “wrong” or as if any little mistake you make might be fatal or you just feel totally lost Bcuz you have had no practice at it) but my subconscious just didn’t get the memo yet. So yah. It just goes WAY deeper than just my cluttery things bothering me. So ergo exercising the decision making muscle just takes time and has to start very small and build itself up for bigger things later. 😬 As one proverb says...multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision. (which is a lot like purgatory imo lol). Well, at least practice makes perfect. So I can at least “practice” at home. Lol. And the funny moment of realization is that when you do something just for you, there is no judge or “punisher.” YOU get to decide and YOU are the queen of your own life. You’re just feeling out who you are and what’s best for you and being “wrong” or making “mistakes” is just a learning curve and becomes very irrelevant. Go fig. Lol. Well geez. Long af comment. Maybe it can help someone else tho. Plus it pays to go deep. Keeps you from constantly circling round and round the same mountain in a futile, pointless way.
@@goodenoughgirl8102 Your second paragraph got me. I think that's why it's harder for some of us to make these decisions. But you're so right about starting with small, easy decisions & building that decision making muscle with practice. It has gotten easier for me, but it's taken several years. I think I may have just found a new video idea for you Laura!!! A labyrinth decluttering video!!! Take aways you can use in your own life during your quest to GYST. The scene where she has the old lady piling everything thing on her back telling her she needs it. Go back to your life an your things and forget about the baby. - how our stuff is actually keeping us from the things we love. They even get lost along the way and have things come at them. They have to deal with horrible smells along the way. Heck they even use a timer! And have fantastic music. And no matter how many times she is side tracked, says it isn't fair and thinks things go on forever and she takes things for granted she gets back on track and pushes through!
I'm soooo motivated now and starting declutter challenge🍁🍂Fall is here and ❄️ winter is behind the corner. Naturally we will be spending more time inside our homes and I don't want to be surrounded anymore but all that clutter. It's mentally exhausting 😳
The memory box I started when I moved into this flat is getting full, I definitely need to go through it and see if there is anything I can let go of now some time has passed
Thank you for another great video. I had a strong urge to drive to Penney's this evening for late night shopping on Thursday. I've decided to watch TV and UA-cam videos instead! Rest is much more beneficial to me at the moment than nighttime driving and "retail therapy". I've also been tempted to buy an expensive makeup palette (like 3 I already own) online and so far have resisted the urge. I try to remember all the things I decluttered and try not to reclutter my environment
I can relate. When I see something I want, I have to remind myself that these corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars to convince me that this item will make my life better. Advertising, store displays, etc. 99% of the time, it's just not true. For myself, limiting myself to online shopping has actually helped, because I put an item in my cart & then I make myself wait for at least one week before I can buy it. Usually, after I've thought about it for a week (or more), I take it out of my cart. It's kind of funny that I've had some big ticket items in one online cart for several months (like a new stove, because mine is 30 yrs old & pretty broken, but it still kind of functions), & I'm still debating whether or not to buy lol---I keep looking for a better deal 😄
It can be so difficult. Have you seen my monthly decluttering series? Each month I share 10 things to toss. It’s great if you’re not sure where to start. Next week’s video will be 10 things to declutter in October. 🙂
True story about invisible clutter: My husband and I work very different hours. I have to get up early and he gets home very late in the evening. I’ve been mulling over moving into the loft so he can get proper sleep during the week. I thought I had emptied the room of most of my stuff, but I looked around and was astounded!
