I've been into fish my whole life and still have 7 fresh water tanks today. Saltwater was always a fantasy as a kid but everyone told me to stay away because its going to be a horror story . About a year ago I stumbled upon 52 weeks and binge watched almost every video BRS had to offer . Those videos are the reason I finally set up a saltwater tank. I cant say it hasn't been a horror story at times but because of these videos that I at least had an understanding of what I was doing (or trying to do). But this whole biome things in my mind has always just been this mystical balance of invisible things you just have to wait for or hope you picked the right bottles of bacteria. Cant wait for the new series!!!

Bravo Ryan! Fantastic presentation with universal truths that explain why so many things I was taught 17 years ago, worked (and still work) so well.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 роки тому +18

Universal truths become universal action when the supporting evidence becomes so overwhelmingly compelling that the doubters become believers. Real progress will come when the ideas become a recipe for action. We are seeking answers to the nuances and timing coupled with readily available tools that hone the universal truths into near-universal success. The challenge is providing enough supporting data that it changes the entire conversation forever. Challenge accepted :)

All of your research and applications changed the way I started my tank up almost 9 months ago. I had no ugly phase at all. I wasn't afraid to introduce cleanup crew members before there was much of anything to clean up. Copopods were a weekly purchase. My tank couldn't be going better to my knowledge. Well...there's always room to do better but I'm happy and my wife never got to complain about an ugly tank. I did this in the 90's and got back in after a 25 year break. Thanks for doing what you do Ryan. I watched BRS videos for hours a day for 3 months before I ever put water in a glass box. You guys made all the difference

Ryan!.. Incredible! You know WHAT makes you such a great speaker? The honest ego less willing to share failures and what you DONT know.. which gives credence to trusting what you DO know. But most importantly... The fact that you DON'T LIKE IT.. Don't want the attention.. but are So enthusiastic, excited and passionate about sharing the info you've learned to help us all, save fish and coral lives, build and strengthen the hobby, and its success rate... that it compells you to get up in front of others and speak... despite the anxiety and nerves. SO many Gems in here!. I IMMEDIATLY CALLED ALLL my local LFSs and asked if they had pods.. and said.. "Well... you BETTER start stocking up... RYAN/BRS did it again! Just like chaeto.. they put in the work, found the right info for success.. and are getting it to the masses."

As of now the video has 950 likes and 29K views. This speaks volumes and shows that roughly only 3% watched the entire video. I have been aggressively seeding tanks most of my life for these reasons and because I have never found any favorable measurable success to failure ratio without life in the tank from day one as preventative measures. That being said, I’ve never seen the “uglies” which I need to intervene for. This video should be the orientation of every reef or fish only tank. Excellent work. Hit Like!

RYAN!!! I see a "Special Episode" in your future, where you take everything you've learned here and help test the success and positive outcome methods you've seen, on a random fan's tank. Maybe a random fan who's a year in, been through a fallow period, Dino's, Diatoms, GHA, etc.. who's been really careful and not lazy, but feels he's maybe still just not seeing success and is kinda frustrated. Good news for you!! I volunteer! (see my YT vids...)
All kidding aside (kinda...), thank you for the time and effort you put into this series, and all of the other productions you've made that have helped so many aspiring reefers! I was hoping you'd post this, for those of us not attending Reef-a-Palooza.
I truly hope you're doing well in your new position Ryan, and hope you continue to do things like this. I do criticize BRS as often as I praise them in these comments (hopefully constructively). However, when I started learning this hobby, it was BRS that was the most influential and informative source for teaching me reef husbandry. I can keep a reef alive today, because I voraciously consumed BRS videos like "52-week's" & "Investigates" which lead to understanding foundational principles, establishing critical habits, and being able to sort out debates on complicated equipment.
Your mission of helping Reefer's overcome the initial difficulties, is a needed one. And while none of us will love every video BRS makes, the Net quality of your UA-cam and social media presence has so far been an extremely positive presence. And often an informative and educational presence. Thank the good people who had the wherewithal to prioritize a "customer advocate" position. And keep it up Sir.

And while a lot of it is exploratory. Much of what was discussed matches concepts in biology, like succession, pioneer species, competition, niche's, & carrying capacity. This was a fantastic focus on how we see those topic play out in our artificial environments. Thank you for taking the time and effort to do tank trials on a level few of us could muster.

Amazing presentation. Thank you. I finally realized what I had bought to beat off some low-brown algae in my tank: nerith snails. I saw that a shop had them, and I knew that they ate pests and algae, so I was able to buy them (they sold them to me) and now no more algae has been growing on the glass. You made me finally search for the name with some of you rphotos, as well as having snails in my small 8 gallon tank with a couple of clownfish. Perfect balance and you made me realize what you need to add in the tank to maintain everything. Beautiful!

As someone currently pricing everything up and looking around for (cheap) gear but with the knowledge from my freshwater tanks that these things need to be done right the first time, I'm just eating it all up and want more.
Really wish Ryan wouldn't mention prices though, Yellow Tangs and cleaner shrimp in NZ start at $200 (each), and all local stores are completely out of dry coral. You've hurt me in my heartwallet, Ryan.

Ryan always comes across as helpful, well-informed, articulate, and non-judgmental. I've learned so much from the BRS videos, and I wish there were more hours in the day to watch them. The only thing I'd change is the way he pronounces "alkaleenity". LOL

Thanks. This one hits home. The only thing I remember from my days on Reef Central was Judgement and lack of empathy for those asking questions made even the best advice impossible to listen too. I should thank them for showing me what not to do :)

Incredible presentation and consolidation of the tank tests you and your team have been doing. Thanks for sharing. I have a nice mixed reef going for past two years through dino's etc.. and I feel though its nice now....I risk getting complacent and reactive to future problems. Im going to embrace your words and be more proactive on top my normal husbandry. Will be adding some more copepods, some mud....etc.. Im sharing this video with everyone I know in the hobby !

Just finished it, great video. I tried to do my tank right and leave it lights off and fishless for a couple months and then lights off with fish for a month, then LPS light levels and consistent weekly 10% water changes, but I’ve been riding the ugly phase rollercoaster.
First diatoms, then Dino’s, then a different type of Dino’s, then GHA, now cyano, GHA and a little brown slime.
I started with a bottle of bacteria, dead rock and caribsea sand. I haven’t lost any fish, corals or inverts, but I wonder if all my sand stirring and blowing is setting the microscopic battlefield awry.
I recently added some corals and snails from WWC hoping they’d impact the biome in my tank and introduce some new organisms. It does look a bit better.

I started researching about 2 1/2 years ago and last January I made a plan of what I wanted and bought my first 20 gallon AIO tank with carbibsea live sand, dry rock and bottled bacteria. After it cycled I added 2 tiny baby clown fish and 1 rock with some zoa's. This rock came from a very reputable supplier and after close inspection added that without dipping to seed my tank with some life. This rock had Munnid Isopods in there and they have been thriving ever since. I also added different snails as the months passed and as needed, but I think the isopods are the main reason I only had one short brown ugly phase and my tank has been running very stable ever since that passed.
My tank now has a mix of different corals and added 2 more fish. The tank has high but very stable nutrients now and I am not doing anything to lower those other than my normal weekly 10% water change, because everything in there seems to do very well even with the higher nutrients. I am now just waiting to see what will happen if I change nothing for the next several months to see if they will go down naturally.
I have learned so much from your video's so far and this one I really liked a LOT.

Thank you so much for this! I am loving the series. I had really been thinking about this exact topic, and thought maybe introducing things like pods was the answer, but didn't have a clue where to begin. Can't wait to put this into action in the dream reef I'm planning!!

    Well done Ryan!
I’ve been at this for the last 40 years and I believe we are on the right track here. I started with a blackout cycle, added pods and dip…however last year I was loosing a battle with red turf algae and decided to go the micro biome route. I’ve been dosing several bacterial products weekly for the past 6 months and I have no bad crap at all. Very clean tank and no RTA! I think there is a coral health component to this as well that you should observe as you are testing….surely the corals are benefiting from a balanced bacterial population….I’m a 90% BTW.

Hey Chris, I am eager to try a black out cycle. At what stage did you add pods? I am thinking I will add AF Life Source mud also during the cycle as well as regularly ongoing. Any tips be much appreciated 👍

@@tarataralee Its been a few years since I cycled this tank but I believe I added them a few months after the blackout term which I believe was about 2 months long...so I would suggest adding them when you turn on your lights.
