Well spotted thanks. It is the question that I put in wrong though. Should read x^2 -2x -4 rather than plus 4.

Not with the fx-300ES no. The method shown in the video has been somewhat superseded by the polynomial silver feature on calculators such as the fx991EX and graphics. Best advice is to update your calculator when ready.

I don't think there is any facility to lock a scientific calculator to prevent others from using it. It isn't that advanced I'm afraid.

Mode > 5 (EQN) > 3 and plug it in and get the answer. just say that next time mate ... we nerds got an exam tomorrow to ace..
+Saif Sleepy The model shown does not have a Equation solver. What if your exam asks you to show an equation in the form (x+a)^2 + b? What if it asked you to show your working? There are many ways a question involving completing the square could be presented. I agree that an equation solver would be the fastest way to obtain a solution, but that's not what this video is about.

thanks, what about finding the exact value of Sin (15*) ? ; teacher did sin(45*)-Cos(30*)....;
but every time i plug it in the calculator to find the exact value it get a decimal point.. any ideas?

I am sure you could.
The best use for a calculator when completing the square is when solving by hand, --you often end up with an improper fraction (after taking one-half the middle term, and then squaring)... like say, 6/4 or 5/2, on the left-side of the equation, that you must then move over to the right-hand side of the equation to finish your work.
Use the scientific calculator to help you decide whether to use the improper fraction or convert it, to use its decimal form, to complete your answer. /Regards
