Best Tips for Visiting Angkor Wat | Siem Reap, Cambodia - How to Beat The Crowds

  • After a week of exploring Siem Reap, Cambodia, these are my best tips for visiting Angkor Wat and the nearby temples.I really wish I knew these things before visiting Angkor Wat, so I've put together this video to help your trip become as amazing as possible!
As I say in the video, the best time to visit the temples in Siem Reap is early in the morning. It is colder, and less crowded. However, a lot of other people also get up early, so you better structure your route in a way opposite of the crowds. I'll also show you how you get to see the main Angkor Wat temple without the crowds.
    Here are my suggested routs:
    1. Start with the gates of Angkor Thom at 7am, then go to Bayon at 7:30, then to the nearby temples after that.
    2. Start with Angkor Wat at sunrise, but go to the East end of the temple (everyone else are at the West side of Angkor Wat. After Angkor Wat, quickly go to Ta Phrom, and the nearby temples.
    3. Start with Pra Roup at 6:45ish, then head to Ta Som at 7:30. After that, go south to Bantay Kedei and the nearby temples.

This vid. gives great advice, especially about being respectful. I lived in SR for 12 years and it has changed a lot. In July 2001, when I first went to Angkor, there were 5 people in the temple. It's very difficult to have that kind of experience now, so advice like Simen's is invaluable.

Whoa! I was there in 2003, and we virtually had the temples to ourselves. So much gratitude for having that opportunity before the tourist explosion. Great video.

Was there in 1996 - even the main walkway to Angkor Wat was empty at 2pm in the afternoon. Virtually nobody anywhere back then.

My tip is to go around noon, yes it's hot but drink plenty of water and seek regular shade. I hired a bike from the hotel and found I was there TOTALLY ALONE.

Good comments. I first went to Angkor in 2010. I was with a Thai mate, and, unfortunately , we only did 5 temples in three days. I have been back on a number of occasions, but, travel on my own.. I will go back in 2020, but, for 5 or 6 days. Back in 2011, I did a day trip to Beng Mealea. That's an amazing place. I went there by tuk tuk as well.

Hi! We actually did this. We followed this instruction, and nailed it! We were ahead the crowds, and mannaged to see the best ones, and chill at the pool for the rest of the day.
We saw the sunrise at Angkor Wat, took some amazing photos, and then continued our way, without visiting Angkor Wat (we did this last) to the next ones, so when we were leaving, part of the groups were arriving. And so on. Also, good recommendations. I liked Bayon the most. Ta Som is also amazing.
So, thank you, and keep posting! 😜

  • @cbrwood
    @cbrwood 6 років тому +1

Simen, thank you so much. Your tips were SPOT ON!!!
My wife and I went to Siem Reap in the beginning of January. It was amazing. I made a 3 day temple plan based on Simen's recommendations. We deviated from the plan on day 2 and hired a guide and went for the sunrise photo at Ankgor Wat. That day was not fun! Our guide was terrible, the crowds were thick, but we got some good pictures. The biggest let down was that when we went into Ankgor the crowds were already there.
The best time to take pictures for us was early morning and late afternoon. The lighting was incredible. Mid-morning to mid-afternoon the light was too harsh.
We did not rent a motorbike. We paid a tuktuk driver $20 for the day and he took us around. I would have preferred to rent a bike, but we heard varying stories that they don't allow it and if you do, you have to leave your passport with the rental agency.
Follow Simen's suggestions...you won't regret it! Visit the Women's Temple...it was one of our favorites!

Wow, that's amazing to hear!! So happy to hear you had a great time. I agree with you, the light in the morning was absolutely incredible.

There are 5 gates in Angkor Tom. You missed one. The last gate is called the gate of ghost 👻. In previous time they used it in some occasional ceremonies such as king funeral.. very quiet 🤫 and less tourists.

i have been Twice to Siem Reap the last time was 4 years ago and the crowds at 5am for the sunrise were crazy even though it was pitch dark and there was nothing to see until the sunrise around 2hrs later , i think i was more dissapointed because my first time visiting was so amazing , my first time was 9yrs ago , i got my tuk tuk driver to pick me up at 4,30 am , he didnt want to do it as everybody else usually arrived at 6am , so he picks me up , we drive to the park entrance , a road with a chain across it , 5am a guy comes , checks my ticket drops the chain and its off we go , we arrive at the parking lot of Angkor Wat there is just me the Tuk Tuk driver and a guard who comes to check me out , i walk over the bridge in the moonlight then through the entrance having to turn on my torch in the blackness of the inside , then i walk into the moonlight courtyard completly alone , silence except for the sounds of the insects , and then around 15mins later the half silence is broken by the low monotomus sounds of Monks in a nearby temple starting their morning chants , absolutly amazing , a true moment of beauty and serenity unbroken until the first busloads of tourists started arriving . now at the car park at 5am there is a guy selling coffee from a van blasting out music ,
