No, I think that's too simple. Plus, Wilhelm's just tooooo...human. And there needs to be a serious response to Kelly shaving the tiniest part of his beard to make that cool mustache.
So the answer to all these issues is...
      the Belt of Dwarvenkind.

Let him earn the goggles. Sure he could steal them from somewhere, but you could also have it as a random drop on a large enemy... Who just so happens to fall on them and crack the lenses when it dies. Now he has to go on a side quest to get them fixed before he can use them.

The lack of magic bows and polearms in the DMG is a serious oversight. I could understand not having a magical whip, but ranged weapon users are a huge percentage of fighters, rangers, and rogues.

Ranged is already quite strong. The quiver magic item and the oathbow seem to be enough to keep the power of the bow in check. Furthermore, the introduction of the artificer basically give normal bows +1 and unli ammo with part of the crossbow expert feat.

easiest way around this is just take any magic sword/hammer/axe and make it another weapon. Longbow of Wounding, Dragon Slayer Lance etc.

    • @CmdrTom
      @CmdrTom 3 роки тому +5

I actually homebrewed a bow for my Ranger:
      Emerald Archer's Bow
Longbow, Legendary Item gifted to the first Ranger, from Queen Olivia of the Star Lands.
The magic weapon has 5 charges for the following properties. It regains 1d4+1 charges daily at dawn.
Grappling Arrow. You may expend 1 charge to transform an ordinary arrow into a slender but durable grappling hook. You may fire the grappling hook at bow range, and a thin gossamer rope will magically uncoil behind it, matching the distance of the arrow flight. If you successfully secure the grappling hook (DM to determine difficulty), the rope is strong enough to support 1000 lbs. of weight. After ten minutes, the grappling hook transforms back into an arrow and the magic rope dissolves into nothingness.
Smoke Arrow. You can use an action and expend 1 charge to fire an arcane arrow, which lands at a point within range and starts to emit a cloud of smoke. One round after it lands, the smoke creates a heavily obscured area in a 20-foot-radius. A moderate wind disperses the smoke in 4 rounds; a strong wind disperses it in 1 round.
Torch Arrow. You can use an action and expend 1 charges to fire an arcane arrow at a point within range. Once loosed the arrow erupts in to flame similar to a torch. Once landing the arrow burns for an hour and otherwise acts like a standard torch.

Glamoured studded leather is often overlooked in favour of the hat of disguise, but is actually a really useful disguise item. You can change it to look like any type of clothes or armour, meaning you could disguise yourself as a noble, or as a knight in full plate, or a simple peasant in rags. It comes in particularly handy for changelings who can change their body but not their clothes and would normally have to take a minute to get changed, but with the glamoured studded leather they can change their clothes immediately to match their new form.

The way I do Rogue/Sorcerer multiclass is to start Divine Soul 1 Hexblade 2 into Arcane Trickster 9. This way I get Medium Armor, Shield, Shield of Faith, and Shield spell/Absorb Elements for defense. For offense you get Booming Blade, Greenflame Blade, and Eldritch Blast. For nova you get Hexblade’s Curse into Magic Missile. For control you can Wrathful Smite into Booming Blade, then next turn Cunning Action disengage into Eldritch Blast + Repelling Blast, and the target can’t get close to you.
Because Hexblade allows you to just pump Charisma (leaving DEX at 14), after Arcane Trickster 9 Magical Ambush you can go straight into Sorcerer with maxed out casting stat and save DC and always get disadvantage to saves against spells you cast with Cunning Action hide.

One common magic item from Xanathar's Guide to Everything that would be useful for a human, or anyone without darkvision is the Moon-Touched sword, which can be placed on any sword (or any weapon/armor with homebrewing). Basically, in darkness, there's bright light for 15 feet around the unsheathed sword, and an additional 15 feet of dim light past that. Useful in situations where you need to see but are unable to use a torch.

I've found most games don't worry about ammo counting anymore. In mine I quit making my players track ammo and the only time a "reload" mechanic comes into play is if you roll a natural 1 on a ranged weapon. In the case of a bow the string snaps or the dodge roll you performed to avoid getting hit spilled your quiver. Usually I just make it cost a bonus action on your next turn to restring or collect your arrows. That way the ammo is present but isn't as tedious.

I have a Lv 5 Character (Lv 3 Gloom Stalker Ranger/Lv 1 Rogue/Lv 1 Forge Cleric). She is a Harengon, so she has the ability to rabbit hop (jump) up to 5x her proficiency bonus w/o provoking opportunity attacks. This works really well when trying to get out of aggro range of enemies, and even stacks with the Jump spell for an additional x3 to the distance (so with Jump spell activated, she can hop up to 45 ft away at Lv 5 as a BA).
She also managed to find some Night Foot Boots (the DM roles available magic items randomly from a very large list every in-game week). These boots give her advantage on all Stealth rolls (even against magical vision) and render her footsteps silent (even when unattuned). When combined with the Umbral Sight feature, she can travel in complete darkness (with 60ft darkvision) and be invisible to any creatures that really on darkvision. So when in darkness, her enemies (or allies) cannot see or hear her at all.
I also took Blind Fighting as my Fighting Style, and have already used the feature twice. I would like to make use of the Fog Cloud spell to sneak up on enemies and attack them with this feature.
She has +8 to initiative rolls, as well as advantage. Hare-trigger allows you to add PB to initiative. Dread Ambusher (Ranger) allows you to add WIS modifier to initiative. And Natural Explorer (Ranger) gives you advantage to all initiative rolls.
Her other major attuned magic item is a Silver Spatula, that applies the effects of the Heroes Feast spell (6th Lv) to any food prepared with it. This gives anyone who eats the food advantage to WIS saving throws, Immunity to poison and being frightened, and an extra 2d10 to the HP maximum (that lasts for 24 hrs). It also heals all poison and disease. As she is a Cleric of a Lawful Good deity, I would like for her to start using this item to start healing diseases that usually seen as incurable.
I put her 2 Expertise in Investigation and Perception, and Revised Ranger gives her advantage to tracking all humanoids (Survival).
I have already used the combination of several of these features on 2 separate occasions. The first was to track the 1st major boss (by myself) from the tavern (following only faint muddy bootprints left about 1 day from the seen of the crime), through a crowded town, to an abandoned rickity shack where the boss was by himself with his dog asleep. I ended up accidently waking him up and managed to escape after seeing him by dashing across the room, hopping to the top of the stairs, dashing across the yard, and then leaping onto the roof tops in order to break initiative.
The 2nd time I tracked people, I ended up following the footprints for an hour until they led into a pitch black sewer. I managed to keep the trail, and came upon a cult performing a ritual to animate a corpse using worms (this cult is a major part of the story/plot of this campaign). I watched the ritual until I failed a Wis saving throw, and something possessed my shadow (a Dust Wraith) that had been following me for awhile. I managed to get the High Priest (as a fellow Cleric, I had connections and woke him up in the middle of the night) to banish the creature from my shadow, but if it hadn't been for my Blind Sight, I wouldn't have even known it was there to begin with.
Overall, I am really enjoying this character. This is the first time I have played a Gloom Stalker Ranger, and currently plan on taking 8 levels in Cleric and 11 levels in Ranger total. On the next Level, I want to take the Eldritch Adept Feat (for Mask of Many Faces) because with the Cult theme and in a campaign that has several themes from the Horror genre, there are going to be several towns that I need to enter that are not friendly to Fey creatures (like Harengon) and the ability to cast Disguise Self at will will be very useful. I am a small creature (3'2'' tall, or 3'8'' tall with my ears upright), so I plan on mostly disguising as Gnomes or Halflings. And to make the disguises more believable, I am going to carry several changes of clothes for certain occasions, and then use the Disguise Self feature to change the colors of the clothes, rather than the type of clothes themselves. I will also be wearing clothing that covers the majority of my fur, so that they can't feel it if they touch my hands or arms, etc.
I also want to take the Crossbow Expert Feat, but am not decided yet on the other 2 feats/ASI's I would like to take yet.
What do you think about this character build so far? Does it sound interesting to you? Any comments or suggestions on what other Feats you think would be useful for me to take?

One possibility that is admittedly trickier to implement than the figurines is the Bag of Tricks. The randomness of the creatures spawned each day makes it harder to balance encounters, especially at lower levels. This is definitely an item you give at mid-level at the earliest, because speaking from experience, the person you give it to will love the little scamps and they *will* spawn all three critters at the first opportunity. Probably works best with campaigns focused on dungeon crawling.

I have just gotten the Sun Blade in our campaign! I'm a Ranger and this is my first campaign ever and I'm having a great time. The DM had a really cool way of bringing the sword into the game. One of the cool ways I've used the sword was to open a barred door for a teammate. I lined the hilt up with the bar through the crack in the door and THEN turned on the blade so it erupted inside of the bar and severed it.

My 1st character was a multi-class Wood Elf Ranger/Rogue. He did have 2 of the items mentioned:
    ▶Slippers of Spider Climbing
    ▶Goggles of Night
    Other useful items I had:
▶Gloves of Missile Snaring (if you don't like getting shot at or shit thrown at you, you can potentially catch the object and shoot or throw it back of the enemy!).
▶Efficient Quiver (3 extradimensional compartments Small holds up to 60 arrows or bolts, Medium up to 18 javelins (or similar), & Large up to 8 spears (trident, bows, etc). For a ranger or Rogue that shoots or throws things, it's helpful!
▶Blinkback Belt (Pathfinder Item: Can hold up to 4 small weapons and if you throw such weapon, it automatically teleports back to your belt at the end of your turn.) Rogues love their daggers, so this is invaluable!
Because I had so many items, I made a specific set for Ranger only, Rogue only, or a mix depending on the environment I was in.

    I would say:
Bracers of Archery- It is a great magic item that I am surprised you didn't say, an gives a giant bonus to hit.
Cloak of the Bat (great choice Monte)- Exactly what you said.
Oathbow (again Monte!)- I know it's a kind of a paladin weapon, but it's an amazing bow that any ranged combatant would love using.
Luck Blade(MONTE!)- It is a amazing sword, that has some lucky properties, and if you are lucky, you might get one with a Wish spell.

Hairgum extra fort from France is a great product, a non setting heavy gel that holds really well, smells posh, yet retains flexibility. wax once in the morning and strut ya stuff. No paraffin: too drying and clunky. May your pursuit of the hirsute be rewarding.

One thing to think on, for the Ranger, it uses a d10 for its hit die, and can wear half-plate armor which, with at least 14 dexterity, can grant the wearer 17 ac, the same as Splint armor (although for stealthy types, Breastplate might be a better choice, for one less ac, and half the price). Also, Rangers can use shields, meaning that an Animated Shield would be useful, as the Ranger could say "Animate" or whatever the command word is, and then draw and use their off-hand weapon, while still getting the protection of the shield for the next ten rounds.

I recently made a Hat of Disguise for the Forge Cleric in the first campaign I ever joined. From what we've gathered recently, the kingdom seems interested in potentially abducting her and forcing her to make magic weapons and armour for them. So we've taken a small group of us away from our home on an adventure to look into a prophecy we were given, as well as trying to look for any ruins of my people. I made the Hat of Disguise for her so she could protect her identity.
Also, as far as decent magic items go, since Rangers have proficiency in Medium armour and are generally squishy, I think a fairly decent choice for bumping up their AC (which wasn't around at the time this video went up) is the Serpent Scale Armour. An uncommon magic Scale Mail that lets the wearer use their full Dexterity Modifier for the AC calculation (like a piece of Light Armour or Mage Armour) and doesn't impose disadvantage on Stealth could be a pretty valuable asset, and it doesn't even require an attunement slot

One useful item for rogues might be the eversmoking bottle. Mutual blindness leaves you without advantage or disadvantage, which means you still get sneak attack if an ally is next to your enemy or if you attack from hiding. Blindsight is very rare, so the smoke will blind almost everyone you encounter as well as yourself. This could be especially good for a rogue with the mobile feat, who can attack, move away and then hide as a bonus action. This situation is even better for the rogue after 14th level where you have blindsense. And just as an added bonus, the heavy obscurement is a good counter to creatures with gaze attacks.

Another good thing about the Sun Blade for more underhanded characters is that it's just a longsword hilt until you want it to be a sword. This opens up interesting possibilities for sneaking it into places where you wouldn't normally be *allowed* to carry a sword. The average town guard is not necessarily well-versed in Arcana, so with a little bit of bullshittery like "this is just a sentimental item and a lucky charm to me" or "oh, I still gotta take that to the blacksmith to get it fixed" you might get them to think it's just a broken weapon not worth confiscating.

I think you've overlooked a rogue item, amulet of proof against detection and location. If you are going up against spell-casting enemies, this provides you a quick, always-on method of defeating their scrying and true sight spells. For me, one of the best uses of the Sun Blade on a rogue is as a beacon for held actions, especially for other party members that don't have dark vision. Say a human wizard holds a spell for when your rogue in stealth/invisibility goes behind enemy lines to sneak attack the right enemy, to suddenly no longer have disadvantage on said spell. Can be a devastating combo for picking out ranged/squishy enemies.

Love you guys, keep up the work. Do have to say though Rangers have the same hit dice as Fighters at 1d10 and with light armor a Dex class only has 1 less AC than a heavy armor wearer with plate armor. Goes down by 2 more for rogues if the person is using a shield but ranger has that option too. Not saying the item was a bad choice though, cloak of displacement is amazing.

  • @Sentinel851

for me, the best items for a ranger/rogue are
common, the Pole of Collapsing. you never know when a 10 foot stick will be useful, and there's no guarantee you'll be the one carrying the bag of holding.
uncommon, the Luckstone. they're likely to be more skill heavy, and going off "alone" means they might need to do more skill checks, so getting that +1 is nice, as is the save, to make sure the party aren't forced to sprint in blindly when the rogue fails their save.
alternatively, the Robe of Useful Items, for basically the same reason as the Pole. a ladder, horse, pit, rowboat, etc, can all come in handy when you're pulling shenanigans.
Rare, a Ring of Spell Storing. as characters who generally don't have magic, being able to have an ally dump a spell in gives them HUGE potential. getting a Misty Step in the ring for a one off teleport, or Darkness/Silence to cover their tracks, Fly, Shield, Faerie Fire, Counterspell, Haste, or any number of other powerful spells. it's really powerful being able to give a front liner (or an ambusher) a Healing Word for them to bust out when the time comes.
Very Rare, yes, the Oathbow is nice, but I'd rather a manual of quickness of action, for the permanent increase to Dex.
Legendary, the Ioun Stone of Mastery is my top pick, for a similar reason to the Luckstone earlier. in addition to attack rolls, it also affects saves and all your skills, particularly if you have expertise.

Goggles of the Night to the only party member who doesn't have dark vision is a god send. The entire party with dark vision will mean zero torches/lanterns. Gloom Stalkers love that, surprise you're fighting a gloom stalker group.
I had adapted the ancestry feats from PF2 for my 5e campain, while I had to write up some for the players that wanted a race that wasn't in the PHB for PF2 I did give them ancestry feats to make up for that(mainly the Warforged). One of the party members is a Gloom Stalker Ranger, I am looking at creatures that negate the feature where they're "invisible" to things that use dark vision so he doesn't have that safety bubble in the event he would pull more aggro from the tanky character.

Re googles of night. My DM customed an item based on someone’s eye, it was like Eratz or something with a double S. Maybe Sseth’s he made it sentient and a requirement was you had to gouge out your own eye with it watching before it would let you attune. Then, if you pissed it off, it would crawl out of your socket in the middle of the night and leave.
If you want to give him night vision but not go easy on him, you could do something like that.

Two other common magic items are Armor of Gleaming, which never gets dirty - useful for fastidious types, such as Nobles, or for when you don't want any messy evidence to expose any wrong doing, like mud and blood, and whatever that foul-smelling substance was back in the sewer, and then Smoldering Armor, which has harmless wisps of smoke coming off of it - no real effects, but perhaps you could use it like Blackbeard did when he'd shove lit cannon fuses under his hat to give him an advantage on his intimidation checks, and might be useful on say a Tiefling who is trying to use his infernal heritage to give him an edge on something.

It's also worth noting that, if you're playing a character with Sunlight Sensitivity, such as a drow, the Eyes of the Eagle, another uncommon magic item, can completely negate your disadvantage on perception checks that rely on sight while in in sunlight.

You don't have to be "holding" a weapon of warning in order to have advantage on initiative or for any of its effects to take place. The description states "on your person" meaning so long as you have it on you either equipped on your side or in your bag it's magical effects will still take place. I highly recommend this item as even for higher levels it still becomes useful even if you are not using it to damage your foes.
