  • Whether you paint warhammer or D&D miniatures, increasing contrast helps 99% of the time. But why is contrast so important for miniature painting? Find out in this tutorial.
If you have attempted to paint non metallic metal for your first time and posted it online for feedback, chances are that someone told you that you need to increase contrast on your miniature. Truly, for NMM to work properly, increasing contrast on painted reflections work nicely.
You could see many videos on how to achieve smoothness on your miniature - this is not one of them. Today, we are tackling perhaps the most important concept of art and miniature painting - contrast!

To me, your videos are ahead by a million the best, because you explain techniques short, quickly and summarized. i appreciate that you explain hours invested in a mini depending on final result. And also you explain that some techiniques are difficult to master. Because others say "this is so easy and basic", and it is quite frustrating to see them painting with "very liquid paint" and awesome results. And when i try their tutorials, my result is total disaster. So my head say, okay, this is easy and i did it horrible. You break down the steps and explain the difficulty, which i like a lot. I've never seen a video explaining that there is an important concept called "contrast". Something i tried to do by myself (and failed ). Thanks a lot :)

Hello. Another well explained video. Personaly when looking at figurines of others, I prefer a good quality paint with a high contrast than a very precice excelent paint job with little or no contrast. When you think it is right, go just one step further. when youngsters have the courage to do that then they have time to improve their skill level. Just my opinion of course. Contrast can be taught fairly rapidly, skill takes time and practice.. All the best.

Say for instace water troll skin vs stone troll skin. Both are sort of blue but one looks 'wet' the other looks 'stony' for example.

It is a common misconception that complementary colors "look good together." The word "complementary" can mean "it pairs well with something" but it can also mean "two things that combine to form a whole." This is how the word is used when talking about complementary colors.
If you mix blue and it's direct complement orange, you get grey. That is because a thing looks blue when it absorbs the orange end of the spectrum, and reflects blue. Likewise, if you have something green (is reflecting green, and absorbing red). If you want it to look like it isn't reflecting light i to our eyes, you can add red paint to it. Because red paint absorbs green, and reflects red, the two together will result in a surface that absorbs all the colors, and reflects none - just like objects do when they are in shadows.
Don't fall for the mistake of thinking "green always pairs well with red." It doesn't--but it is always the complement of red.
