- Whether you paint warhammer or D&D miniatures, increasing contrast helps 99% of the time. But why is contrast so important for miniature painting? Find out in this tutorial.
If you have attempted to paint non metallic metal for your first time and posted it online for feedback, chances are that someone told you that you need to increase contrast on your miniature. Truly, for NMM to work properly, increasing contrast on painted reflections work nicely.
You could see many videos on how to achieve smoothness on your miniature - this is not one of them. Today, we are tackling perhaps the most important concept of art and miniature painting - contrast!

As always, you are one of the best to explain concepts of mini painting
Thank you so much!
SO TRUE
I really love how you actually approach the theory of painting rather than just doing a standard step by step guide. It's really refreshing to be gifted knowledge rather than just instructions. Great work 👍
I truly appreciate your kind words, especially since my goal is to describe general approaches and concepts rather than color recipes etc. Thank you!
@@Zumikito
You show it in such an amazing way how to add those color recipes that I am amazed. Just in 5 minutes or under a 5 minutes. That's like Da Vinci in action allthought to be honest: even Da Vinci couldnt do it better than you do it Zumikito. I hope all the best for Da Vinci but Da Vinci has met Zumikito and the winner is Zumikito to be honest. (Y)
Love this 5 minutes series. No BS, straight to the point useful info
great video! I always learn so much.
Man, you are brilliant! For a 4,5 minutes I learned more, than hours of others turorials
your channel + marcofrisoni NJM = how and why you should paint and think before painting ! and i LOVE IT !!!!! keep doing it, i will try and thikn twice before apintign my next minis, because i feel like they are not readable enough.
I love your work man. Doesn’t matter how many tutorials I watch, nothing makes concepts click quite like your videos.
Im new to miniature painting but have already improved a lot just by thinking about it more in these concepts, rather than just putting on paint and not understanding why it looks crap.
I love you so much. You are a goddamn painting savant and your videos are absolutely the most helpful on youtube. Thank you!!!
@@gitsgaming5807 We need to get together and figure out what Sacrifice is necessary to unlock the skills of this man.
So clearly communicated, I learn more in your 5 minute videos than in anyone elses YT tutorials or videos. Thank you 👏👌👍.
dude such a good job communicating the concept quickly and effectively! Your paint jobs are inspiring too
Thank you!
Another great teaching, I’m very grateful. If I only had just a little of your talent.
Thank you! Though I don't think that I am naturally talented painter, it was all learned through a long process 😅
I love these 5 minute videos that get right to the point. Thank you!
Dude, you’re “in 5 minutes” series is amazing! Good job!
As a completely clueless painter (I still drybrush, but having been out of the hobby for 25 years, I have an excuse) these shorts are super helpful. Thanks!
Another great contrast is that of finish. Having a few select things be glossy while most are matt or even satin can really help a mini stand out. Thanks for sharing and please stay safe.
To me, your videos are ahead by a million the best, because you explain techniques short, quickly and summarized. i appreciate that you explain hours invested in a mini depending on final result. And also you explain that some techiniques are difficult to master. Because others say "this is so easy and basic", and it is quite frustrating to see them painting with "very liquid paint" and awesome results. And when i try their tutorials, my result is total disaster. So my head say, okay, this is easy and i did it horrible. You break down the steps and explain the difficulty, which i like a lot. I've never seen a video explaining that there is an important concept called "contrast". Something i tried to do by myself (and failed ). Thanks a lot :)
This is perhaps the single best painting video I've seen.
Man I just love the sister of battle model you always show.
Oh damn, now I have to stop showing her lol, cannot be using her always
Love these 5 min concise videos, you Sir are my new go to paint channel.
Great advice and explained fantastically.
Cool video
I would like to see more videos about paiting topics, but maybe in a larger video. I mean this are like little pearls but would be cool see all this in a miniature and see the progression (like the white primaris video and the battle sister)
Keep it up bro!
Thank you! All will be covered in the future at some point :)
Dude your videos are the best. Simple and short, but full of knowledge
Thanks for sharing this vid with us! Great info as always.
i like how you explain everything in a simple way, so everyone understands :D Btw, simple is difficult. At the end of the video, we all get the concept, the idea you want to explain, without any boring and/or flashy stuff. Well done, keep up the good work!
Great advice and lots to think about. Thanks for another great video. Cheers.
This video is a real master class. Explain the concepts clearly and accurately. This video should be seen by all beginners miniature painters. I’ll have to look at it three or four times. Thank you so much. Good job.
-"Aquest video és una autentica clase magistral. Expliques els conceptes de manera clara i precissa. Aquest video l'haurien de veure tots els pintors miniatures principiants. Jo me l'hauré de mirar tres o quatre vegades. Moltes gràcies. Bona feina."
Great, simple and effective. Applauses!!
Very nice summary of several concepts; thank you.
Great video, thanks for the clear and concise explanation
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome! Great explanation. Really clear and understandable. Now where’s my colour wheel? 🤔
Another great video! Thank you!
Just found your channel and I'm amazed about the great content. Keep it up and greets from Czechia.
Welcome aboard! From Czechia as well 😁
Very helpful, Thanks!
Hello. Another well explained video. Personaly when looking at figurines of others, I prefer a good quality paint with a high contrast than a very precice excelent paint job with little or no contrast. When you think it is right, go just one step further. when youngsters have the courage to do that then they have time to improve their skill level. Just my opinion of course. Contrast can be taught fairly rapidly, skill takes time and practice.. All the best.
Thanks for sharing! I see it the same way. Cheers
Another great video, helpful and very informative as always. Keep up the great work buddy and keep safe in this crazy world!
Like always, great job!
Man, i just love your channel!! 🙌 Thank you!!
Loving this 5 min concept. It helped me a lot, thank you!
Top drawer! I learnt quite a bit there thanks 👍🏻
Great to hear!
Best beart ive ever seen paint miniatures :)
So glad I found you. Great stuff.
You just covered an entire college level semester on color theory in 15 minutes. Ouch. My brain hurts.
Dont worry about it. These tutorials are amazing. These are some really awesome short videos :) (y)
thanks now i know the difference between HSB/HSV
Great vid ! Thx
Great informative video, I've subscribed
welcome aboard!
Marvelous video as always my friend!! I will send you soon some resources can be talk in future videos soon! :D
good video as always bro!
Zumi , we want a step by step with contrast brother , great video as usual
There will be step by step on NMM at some point and since NMM needs contrast, you can tune in for that :)
@@Zumikito hell yeah thats what im talking about, you'r great Man, one of the best minis youtuber right now !
you should do a video where you use the most uncomplimentary colors and try to make it look natural and pleasing
Great video, would love it if you could show more examples too, even of other artists work etc where certain techniques have been used. As i am learning i find the most tricky thing is to know what technique to use to replicate some effect. the tutorial on leather and glass for me where one of the best ever and i am going to try that technique on some potion bottles next :) For exapmle: Getting a wet look vs a dry look. Say for instace water troll skin vs stone troll skin. Both are sort of blue but one looks 'wet' the other looks 'stony' for example.
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it! Will note that down
Great video, as always!
Wait for this video, like
I think need moor contrasst! 🐶🥰
Points for heavy use of Platypus references (one can never have enough) - next, Echidnas!! 😊🇦🇺
Love ur vids
It is a common misconception that complementary colors "look good together." The word "complementary" can mean "it pairs well with something" but it can also mean "two things that combine to form a whole." This is how the word is used when talking about complementary colors.
If you mix blue and it's direct complement orange, you get grey. That is because a thing looks blue when it absorbs the orange end of the spectrum, and reflects blue. Likewise, if you have something green (is reflecting green, and absorbing red). If you want it to look like it isn't reflecting light i to our eyes, you can add red paint to it. Because red paint absorbs green, and reflects red, the two together will result in a surface that absorbs all the colors, and reflects none - just like objects do when they are in shadows.
Don't fall for the mistake of thinking "green always pairs well with red." It doesn't--but it is always the complement of red.
Can I just ask where are you from?(country)
Your videos Are amazing Its perfectly what I need
Thank you! I am Czech :)
Where do you get these amazing platypus miniatures?
Those are from CobraMode - 3D printed STLs which I also used for my video on textures 👌
Amazing work! What's the mini holding a pizza at 37 seconds?
That is my conversion of Iron Father - iron hands chapter master. I call him Iron Papá
@@Zumikito it's hilarious!! Shame it isn't readily available!
Love your videos and your bear!. You're not always in focus though, maybe you could fix that for future videos. Cheers!
Thank you! When I reviewed the shots, it wasn't even noticable and doesn't really disturb me when watching but I will keep an eye on that! If the shots of miniatures were blurry, now that would be a problem 😬
Good contrast is hard to do!
How can I make an eldar shuriken catapult look as nice as that sob gun? It has more flat space to do a gradient effect compared to the shuriken rifle
the gradient on sob gun goes from bottom up, but in the case of shuriken rifle, I would paint it from side to side - even paint multiple reflections, just like I would on a sword.
@@Zumikito and you'd use a brush? I feel like my ability needs to jump rather than take a step or two in order to do this well
@@LoftOfTheUniverse yes, I use brush for 99% of the stuff
Which paint storage rack do you have?
It is polish brand, can not remember the name unfortunately, but they have whole modular system
HEy, Zumikito, please record some video about colour theory. I do not have problems with technics, but with the right choice of colors for highlights. I use a mix of the base color and white for highlights, but that's probably a mistake. help
Easy solution is to add yellow with white or only yellow :) that way you keep the intensity
@@Zumikito will it work for every colours?
@@mateuszmays4225 for most warm colors, Ice Yellow or sunny skin tone works, for cold colors you can also try sky blue
@@Zumikito thank you for answer;) but tell me please, which colours are warm and which colour are cold?
@@mateuszmays4225 purple, violet and blue would be cold colors where sky blue shines! For others I would use ice yellow
I have one question... why do you look like Steve from Minecraft? lol j/k, that made me laugh, but wth left you that comment? XD
Anyway, great content, thanks!
Anyone know where I can get the car mini? at 3:27
It's from Marvel Crisis Protocol
@@Zumikito thanks, you wouldn’t know where I could still find it by any chance?
Imagine disliking this
I wish you could talk about this at length
Right how about instead of me watching this trying to work up to painting my void Dragon, you just come here and do it for me and we will pretend it was me
Nerds when Zumikito mentions "diversity": \*frothing rage\*
