  • Once again I return to R.A.F Swinderby to see what changes have been made to the old airbase. The construction of a new industrial estate continues with several new units being built on land where the aircraft hangars once stood.
The new industrial estate is being called "ST MODWEN PARK".
The runways continue to be dug up to make way for quarrying.
The drone footage was unfortunately filmed in 24fps so a bit choppy in places but you can easily see what is happening on the old base.

Thanks, it`s a pity that I forgot to change the fpm from 24 to 60 but it`s still watchable. Hope everything is ok where you are.

I hope you have passed to CAA tests for your drone ?.
I'm not being funny.....far from it, just trying to save you from prosecution if the police stop you. I gave up flying model aircraft because the Govt made it illegal.
Stunning footage by the way......so sad to see another airfield being lost. I visited 276 disused airfields over the years.

Not sure if I enjoyed this or not, did my basic there in 1973 and it feels as if part of your life has been torn away. We were accommodated in Nissen huts at the far end of the runway from the Newcomers club. There used to be a large mud hill alongside the runway and we had to run around the runway, fight on the hill then continue running. It was male only then with WRAF being bussed in from RAF Newton for Saturday night disco’s

Same hear FREND I was there in 1978 it was the start of the BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE SWINDERBY. IM NOW 63 AND SERVED 20 ODD YEARS WITH R.A.F. THANKS TO RAF SWINDERBY AND ALL THE NCO'S AND OFFICERS THAT MADE IT POSSIBLE AT THE VERY YOUNG AGE OF 17.
IT'S SO SAD TO SEE HISTORY LIKE THIS TO BE GOBBLED UP BY MONEY MAKING PROFITS AND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS NOT KNOWING WHAT SWINDERBY DID FOR OUR COUNTRY MAKE BOYS IN TO MEN AND SERVE THIS COUNTRY SO THAT THIS GENERATION CAN LIVE. AND MOSTLY NOT RESPECT WHAT SWINDERBY DID.
FOR ALL YOU GUY'S THAT TRAINED AT SWINDERBY YOU WILL KNOW WHERE IM COMING FROM . ALL THE BEST GUY'S THAT STILL REMEMBER THOSES DAY'S.

Yip. Exactly 32 years ago to the day I was arriving to start my basic training. It was a huge life changing thing leaving home. Im not even sure I really knew what I was letting myself in for. Different times. Nowadays recruits turn up at Halton in their BMWs, on their mobile phones wearing designer clothes.

Had a wee look for “Bunker Hill” but it’s probably gone. God Swinders was grim in the 70s.

No, IT WAS GREAT FUN . GRIM OR NOT 6 WEEKS WOULD DO IT AGAIN IF I COULD. FOR WHAT THE NEXT 20 ODD YEARS GAVE ME IT WAS WORTH EVERY PUSH UP , EVERY BOLIKING, EVERY STAY BEHIND WEEK ENDS, EVERY MILE OF THAT COLD CROSS COUNTRY RUN AT 7.AM AROUND THE AIR FIELD IN FEBRUARY WITH ICE EVERY WHERE.

A tough time for recruits back then...

Entirely symbolic of todays ugly world which never needed this degree of security at the height of the Cold War when an RAF base but seemingly can’t do without it now! Think I prefer the version I knew in 1982! Heart breaking!

How many people who live there now, know that their house is on the site of the filming location for a large portion of the first part of Full Metal Jacket?
