Photographing Waxwings in flight using Procapture on the OM-1 with the 150-400mm lens

- Using Procapture on the OM-1 I attempt flight photography of the Waxwings not far from where I live. Procapture makes it easy, but you do need the right light. Sunshine not only gives you a higher shutter speed, but it puts detail into the feathers of the birds.
For most of the video I use the Lumix G9 Mk2. It allows me to shoot 120 fps 4K video for slow motion and the autofocus works very well in video mode.
With both camera bodies I use the OM 150-400mm lens.

That intro was superb. One of your best.
Much appreciated!
The video with the waxwings flying in from the background and coming into focus is epic.
Thank you.
Love the opening scene with the birds flying in and you caught some great fanned wing positions of the flight stills.
Thanks.
Stunning opening sequence Mike.
I liked it
Very good video Mike. Lovely footage and stills.

So beautiful colors and light! Thank you! 🙂
Thank you
Super Mike, one of your best I'd say, lovely quality and details.
Many thanks!
Wish there was a charm to get rid of the fences 🙂
There was plenty to love and enjoy though. Great video...
Next time!
Thanks Mike for another excellent video. There are so few photography channels that provide this kind of content - a love for bird photography and a no nonsense approach to equipment. Thank you!
Much appreciated!
It's amazing Mike, well done!
Thanks a lot!
Mike Love from India 🇮🇳 . I see your videos. I understand English a little bit but your photography awesome.
Thank you very much!
They don't even chew! Amazing

Fabulous video Mike. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Amazing as always
Thank you! Cheers!
Just beautiful 📸👏👏
Many thanks!
Very nice. I always enjoy the Waxwings. I had a few of the juvis show up near my home in Nov. of 2023.
Thanks.
Fantastic works Mike, really love watching your content. Also, much appreciated for your valuable knowledge and tips. Cheers.
Much appreciated!
Great video and pictures, Mike. I agree entirely that you need the light / sun - especially with birds this colorful. I also agree with your statement that sunshine has been in short supply this winter. Great shots @ 4:40.
Absolutely
Great video again Mike. Some cracking shots. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it
I love finding waxwings congregated like that, Mike. I have found a couple of mulberry trees that they hit like that in May when the berries are ripe. When I find them like that I just pull up with my tripod and sit there and shoot as long as the light is good. Thanks for taking us on another fine outdoor outing.
Thank you.
Brilliant stuff again, Mike! 🥂
Thanks
Fabulous video.Fantastic works Mike
Glad you enjoyed it
Lovely film as always Mr Lane!
Thank you.
What an intro brilliant 👏
Glad you like it
Thanks Mike for another great video😊Fantastic intro with the birds flying in 👍🏻 only seen them from a distance last year, must get out more next time they visit us Cheers Doug
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow! Blown away by the stunning opening sequence. How do you anticipate for such a shot
Repeated action is easier to anticipate but that was the last time they did it in number's
Michael, thank you very much for the terrific video. The stills images are some of the best I've seen, and the group footage had me fixed.
The pro capture must help, but you still have to get the shot that you do. Thanks again.
Thanks.
Superb content Mike
Thanks
Recently discovered your channel Mike, your photography and content is amazing and a joy to watch! Waiting for more :)
Welcome aboard!
Superb! The wealth of wildlife to be found in Britain is incredible. We, in southern Germany, can only dream of such opportunities. it is really a pleasure to watch your films. Kind regards, Bob
The UK bird life is very poor. It has collapsed. We have this wonderful gear today, but much harder to find wildlife to photograph.
@@MikeLaneFRPS And still better than in Germany.
perhaps from your point of view. Here, in our country, there is virtually nothing but the most common species, and, in the last 50 years even many of those have become rare. It is a shame.
Google which European country has the lowest bio diversity and the U.K. wins.
@@MikeLaneFRPSok! 😢
How cool is that! Never seen these birds before. And Im in Birmingham too :)
This year there are a lot.
That pro capture on the OM-1 seems excellent lovely flight shots and open wing spread timing of the waxwing take off. They soon golloped up all those berries what will they do tomorrow great that you were there before they finished.
They move on to the next lot of berries. usually going south.
Beautiful shots Mike, love the Waxwings. We had an eruption on our Northern California horse ranch this year and was able to get a few nice shots.
Sounds great!
I much more prefer cloudy days. The light reflection on the eye makes the birds look more vivid like shown at minute 4:36. Less contrast and no shadows are two more advantages, when sun is not shining.
Brillant footage one more time!
Thanks
Hey there Mike great video per usual. As a hobbyist who shoots mainly birds with the OM-1(&150-400) you've been the best resource. Curious if you're keen to try or upgrade to the OM-1 Mark II. Personally, I think I'm most curious to see if there's a tangible improvement in bird autofocus performance.
I will buy one, but no rush. The spec is not very exciting. They have dropped by £450 this weekend.
Hi Mike, great video of these stunning birds 👍🏽 I'm yet to see one, we had one (first time ever) recorded at my local nature reserve 2 weeks ago. There aren't many berry trees there, must of been a quick pass through 📸
Many thanks
Lovely work! The behavior is quite familiar to me. We have Cedar Waxwings come through the Bay Area, California. I can drive a short distance to photograph them feeding on Toyon berries with my E-M1 mk iii and 100-400. They also visit my neighbor’s persimmon tree, so I have opportunities to watch them feasting on the ripe fruit.
Sounds great!
hi mike
what wonderful beautiful images. OM systems is running the world. (just kidding) but anyway I enjoy your beautiful photo and video work every time.
greetings from the Netherlands❤
Many thanks!
mükemmel .
As usual, an entertaining video.
But you know what we are waiting for! You can remind OM about how many subscribers you have compared to some others.
I will buy one when available, but my expectations are low. A slight improvement in the AF maybe.
@@MikeLaneFRPS I think Pro Capture works better.
Lovely video and stills. I found your comment about the AF on the OM-1 for stills vs the G9II interesting especially as you've used both extensively now. As a stills shooter, I'll stick with the OM-1 but if I were into video the G9II looks like a very nice package.
Thanks
Nice video, I have the same cameras as you, the OM-1 and the G9M2, one thing I really like is using the Pixel Pixel option to obtain greater magnification with very good image quality. Congratulations on the content of your channel. Greetings from Spain
Thanks for sharing
Such a beautiful bird Mike think they need to chew their food a bit better though 😊📷
Same for me.
Amazing video of these beautiful birds. I was also disappointed with the spec of the mkII, after watching the OM videos. Very uninspiring images which could have been made with almost any camera. I did watch Thomas Eisl who has made a much more objective assessment and much more positive. The autofocus and tracking improvements are impressive. I have pre ordered and am looking forward to trying one at the local store.
Thanks for sharing
Hi, thanks a lot for this great video ! It's such a pity that the OM-1 does not allow the capture of decent slow motion footage...
And the Om1 Mk2 is not much better.
Hey, how do you find specific sights for specific bird species? This just looks like a random road somewhere and yet there are waxwings consistently there for multiple consecutive days.
And you do this a lot, you come to a location for a particular bird.
Thanks for the great video, enjoyed it as usual!
Word of mouth or the internet. Google is your friend. Search the web and you can find most things. I am poor on social media, but many look on Facebook etc for birds sightings.
beautiful. im wating to buy. om1 mark 2 camera 😍
I will buy one but the spec is disappointing
Hello, I`m just thinking about what to buy. Wich is better for photography, OM1 II or the G9 II? I have an OM1. P.S.: Your opinion is important to me!
For stills I use the OM1, but there is not much in it. I will buy the Om1 mk2 when available.
Thank you@@MikeLaneFRPS
@@MikeLaneFRPSMe too. And what do you think about the 150-600?
like to see video about om 1 mark 2 camera
I shall buy one but the spec is unexciting
You qould have been the right person to test the new mark ii camera and the new longer lens - but maybe you didnt want to (?) (Fwiw i was surprised at some of the reviewers - landscape photographers with a 1200mm equivalent lens didnt really make much sense Olympus.)
I don't have access to one. I will buy the camera when it is available, but the spec is not very exciting.
Where in Birmingham please?
Bournville college Longbridge.
Long gone though
