Exactly this. The fact that it mirrors Logan's final walk so closely, also through the park, really hammers this home: in both cases, we see a billionaire, with a level of status most covet and can only dream of, yet we see them alone and pensive, sad and wondering if it was all pointless, what's left. Except Kendall's was even more devastating because he never actually made it.
I was adamant on not feeling any sort of strong attachment to the characters, but the final interaction between the brothers was gold and I ended up feeling pity for Kendall, he truly believed in himself despite all he tried was garbage.
One of the most tragic characters in modern fiction in my opinion. Promised this grand destiny for as long as he can remember, devoted his life to making it happen, even trampling his humanity for it, but thwarted at the finish line every time by increasingly gut-wrenching betrayals and circumstances. The worst part isn't even that he failed, but that in his efforts he was changed to be more like the person he despised most and it was all for nothing. The doors are all closed, bridges all burned, he is a purpose built product that wasn't allowed to fulfill its purpose. A prince who could never be king

The way the Tom & Shiv end scene is framed so well. Shiv married Tom because she believed he was a weak man who she could push around. In this last scene, he looks powerful while Shiv looks defeated. She congratulated him to which he quietly deflects, “oh, no no.” He lays his hand out for her to take his lead. He’s completely flipped the script on the dynamic of their relationship. Now he’s the one in control. And as for Kendall, well, what can you say. The tragedy almost lies in how fitting it is for him.
but she still resists, she only lays her hand with no effort to actually touch him and he sees that and looks away, id say its more of a relationship of equals now
@@frostyspikes7589 eh. All she cares about is power. It’s her end all, be all. The fact that Tom has it, albeit limited as Matsson’s pain sponge, but still much more than Shiv now, I think would drive her nuts. I would assume she’d end up envying him greatly for that reason.
@@jlop6822 Just finished the series and yeah its wild how she ended up exactly where she didn't want to be. She wanted to be Logan and ended up as her mother. In a loveless marriage to a powerful man but with no real power of her own and bearing a child she'll undoubtedly resent.

Most people forget this interpretation of Roman's finale. Film rarely ever shows us what happens to the countless souls that bet it all on one dream, and fail. There is no nobility in failure. Only shards of what was once your undesired life.
I think it's that way at first. But in the end, I think it's better to have truly gone for it. "better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" kinda thing.
Can we take a moment to appreciate Matthew Macfadyen ASTONISHING performance and body/ facial expressions control: the way he enters the car (great cinematography, BTW, with camera angled behind him, putting him in the center as his security personnel opens the doors for him), that “hey” and “ Oh no” to Shiv; the lip work as he looks outside the window; the manner at which he places his hands on his knees as soon as he takes his seat; his head movement ( initially upwards, the a subtle nod downwards). God damn what a delivery… On a different note, turned out he was the best to take over. Ate a lot of $hit, but always maintained eyes on target. I will so miss this show…
I'm sure we've known it for a long time that none of the kids is suited to be the leader. They're utterly broken people. We were just waiting to see if they would ever get any better, and they never did. So the empire is probably better off with Mattson. And the Roys are better off living on their shares, doing shit all. But I understand that from their point of view, money is never really the point since they're damn rich already. They just desperately wanted to be someone.

The important conversation was at the water's edge between Roman and Shiv. It was one of weakest displays of brotherly love that I have seen on TV. No enthusiasm for their decision at all. It was 'we are at the bottom of barrel' and we are not the alternatives anointing. Either Roman or Shiv could have flipped at that board mtg.@@thefm9881
Colin representing the specter of Logan following him around after his death and him being above the water opposed to always being in it over four seasons is great imagery. It leaves how his character goes after this up for interpretation. Is he stuck in the past with his dads shadow constantly over him, or does he finally gain clarity to do something on his own after obsessing with replacing his father. So well done.
The characters always had endless money and time. What they sought after, the CEO position, their fathers approval, Kendall’s one true goal in life aren’t things that they could’ve bought, and they all failed to earn any of them.
No shame to acknowledge that I was disappointed hugely with the ending at the very first viewing….I was wrong…dead wrong….this is beautiful, brutal, and spellbinding of an ending. Congrats to everyone associated with the show. You delivered a masterpiece.
One of the greatest tv shows of all time with a perfect ending. So grateful that I got to witness this masterpiece… even 3 months after finishing the show and I am still devestated from that ending.
Connor looked happy in the end. He's the one that won the most. He bought Logan's house without much fuss from Martia, and she even seemed to like him the most out of Logan's children. He lives in blissful obliviousness with Willa. He was the only one who got to spend some time with Logan in the eve of his death. He even tried to reunite the family during his wedding. Kendall looks in the end as if he wants to kill himself. Completely broken, shattered. But trapped by the bannister and haunted by the memories of what he did, as symbolised by the bodyguard standing to his right. Roman looks lost. He smiled for a moment, finally free from that wretched company. But then the smile disappears. The future is up to him. But he hates himself, so it's unlikely he'll do much with it. Siobhan looks completely dead inside. She's now in Tom's palm. She'll be the glorified baby-maker of the for now Chief Executive Officer. She'll end up like her mother. I doubt she's gonna divorce Tom Wambsgans. She told him she feared the underneaths in a relationship. As she told him a few episodes earlier, they've said the worst stuff to each other, which paradoxically, makes her feel safe. Because she already knows that Tom doesn't like her, but he'll still provide for her. For their future child, too. And for her. Apart from Connor, the Roy children all end up with what they deserve. Love it.
Also, Connor is the only one who acts as himself while the other 3 are always trying to be Logan 2.0 or wants to defeat him. Connor's not involving the company from the beginning is his blessing in disguise because the other 3 are ends up miserable and depressed. Also, Connor despite his platonic relationship with Willa is the only person who treats his partner with respect. Kendall is a mysognistic as he mostly treats women like nothing, just like Logan to all those women around him. Roman is a pervert, he mostly talks dirty and can't even touch both of his exes (Grace and Tabitha) and he mostly needs Gerri as she is the closes thing to have as his mom as his own mom is very ignorant. And deep down, he might be gay. Shiv is mostly treating Tom as her lapdog and she mostly being a girlboss, she wouldn't allow Tom to cheat with anyone but she can cheat with any men and treat them as her own sex toy. It's because for her entire life, she mostly being ignored on her own family as her dad left her for work and her brothers mostly left her behind and when she found Tom, she's finally superior to meet a man whom she can treat whatever she wants. But, Tom wants to marry her for her money and social status even he admits to Greg that the first thing he saw on her is her purse not Shiv. Also, Shiv is rude, spoiled and deep down is clueless and naive.
@@margarethmichelina5146 I don't think Roman is gay deep down. He never shows any ounce of attraction to any man around him. I think he's heterosexual, but his emotional side is so damaged that he has to pretend he's f*cking a corpse (as he tells Tabitha) in order to feel safe. Either that, or jerking off to a maternal figure's demeaning comments, turning humiliation into pleasure. I also disagree that Siobhan is naive. That implies being unaware of the dangers of the world, which she's not. I do perceive her to be a deeply arrogant person. She's aware of other people, she simply doesn't care.
@@aced9852 I guess I meant emotionally and socially (he'll make her feel safe in their dysfuntion and she'll get to remain in the married couples club).
@@aced9852 In the end it's not about who's the richest, it's about potition and power play. Tom played the game very well. He took risks, took any chances whenever there's a gap, has a humility and also always have Plan B. The other 3 are just clueless and they mostly want to play safe and won't take risk or break a sweat. They want the CEO position because they have mentality of "Because my dad told me to" but not know that being CEO means you have to go to work 24/7 with no vacations or breaks and going with endless meeting to keep the company stay. I bet if any of them become CEO, it won't last a year or a month, probably in a week, they will get overwhelmed and bored. Especially to Kendall who mostly can't handle criticism, tempremantal and also will point blame to anyone. He mostly always avoiding conflicts because he's scared to handle the conlficts or arguments and he will talk his way to win. Also, he's a drug addict, someone probably will catch him doing drugs and he will get caught by the police for being a drug addict and his CEO dream is over.
Man what a tragic ending. Such a moving scene with brilliant music. I have watched this whole series probably 5 times and I'm still shattered for Kendall at the end.
Outstanding scene . Did anyone notice how different Tom looks in the car with Shiv he looks bigger more powerful . And Kendall staring in to the harbour with Colin on watch . Outstanding . Best show ever 🎬📺🙌
Not enough credit is given to Colin, who was Logan's bodyguard and is very loyal to his boss and is now looking out for Kendall. He probably understands Kendall more than he's willing to admit especially his threats in S3 of "I know you" since he is one of those people cleaning up Kendall's mess with the waiter. But despite his loyalty, he's also a silent witness to Logan's attitude to his children I assume he's gonna look out for Kendall as well knowing how much he's been screwed over.
I know people clown on the term "money can't buy happiness" a lot, but this whole show demonstrates the truth of that statement perfectly. Happiness has existed before money ever did. Happiness is usually acquired when you fulfill your needs, goals, wants, desires, or purpose. When you experience something that feels meaningful to you. It just so happens that in the modern world, money is one of the main methods for people to help achieve those things. But when the thing you desire, need, or dream of cannot be bought with money, then it becomes significantly less useful for you. The same can be said for having so much money that nothing you buy can excite or make you happy anymore. Hell, in some situations going broke could actually be the solution for you because it changes your needs, desires, and purpose. Money really can't buy you happiness sometimes. Just like Kendall here. He is at the point the where he's the wealthiest he has ever been in his life, yet he looks the most broken and empty.
Any of the siblings could have conquered what they wanted in life - only if Logan raised them right, but Logan wasn't interested in that, he was interested in toying with them for his approval and ended up with no one suitable to be leader in the end.
I remember just sitting in silence when the final credits rolled. This show was just absolutely phenomenal. So funny, quotable but also heartbreaking and tragic. Just a masterpiece.
i love the paradox that came with ken's final scene with him being soaked in blinding sunlight but it was partnered with the sound of waves crashing. it symbolizes how kendall feels abt his new found "freedom". the sun is there which is what his dad tried to metaphorically sacrifice him to and the water which is the element that he always tried to kill himself with. in the end, he was dominated by both forces. he could never win !! it's so poignantly poetic.
Mattson was dressed up as a looming threat, the true antagonist from the later two seasons. And he won. No one else really did, the person who won second most was Tom and his romantic life seems completely shattered. An ending where the only winner was the antagonist. A masterclass showing of the destructive effect abusive parenting combined with power and money has on a family and especially the children of the family.
Also, it really shows that The Roys are just not completely ready to take over the company. They all sharing the same childhood for being neglected by their father and they all still suffering their PTSD until adulthood. All of them are still mentally unstable and their situation is so bad, the company took over by another person. Even Kendall who tried to act tough like Logan is still a broken man. Shiv with her brains and manipulation and also lack of love with Tom is accepting the defeat that she is becoming CEO's wife forever. Roman is too laidback and too chill, he's just simply not ready. Connor in the other hand wants to live in a simple life with his sidechick Willa because he knows that his father never likes him since he was a kid.
@@alexman378 Logan has sold his soul which is Waystar to Mattson. Mattson is the true successor of Waystar. What an incredibly beautiful piece of music. A great take and culmination of the soundtrack we’ve gotten to know. Wonderful in the context and gorgeous on its own.
Somehow even more tragic than a Shakespearean ending. The Bard would have, at least, left us with a sense of finality, of the world soon righting itself and returning back to form. But the story in "Succession" perpetuates beyonds the final shot, with its dark and dreary outlook on the future living on and worsening with time.
I love this show so much oh my God oh my God I miss you so much. This one of the best shows I ever seen. My heart is broken this season and already years ago please bring it back please. I’m crying right now. I love this show.
I just hated how Siobhan would betray her brothers and everyone close to her over and over again. She messed up her whole legacy herself, the way she would change her mind so drastically in a matter of hours. She would always seek to be with the “strongest” and then realize it wasn’t enough for her because she just wanted to rule however she wanted with no regards for anyone but herself. She was selfish and so jealous of what Kendall would have been able to achieve. She really was just like the scorpion Tom gave her. Now she will never achieve what she wanted because of how selfish she was and it is entirely on her. She just could never get enough and always bit more than she could chew.
One of the best shows ever. Each box is checked off. Cast, cinematography, plot, comedy, drama, soundtrack (one of my all-time favorites), and, in my opinion, one of the most important check boxes for a show: a GREAT ENDING. Not pointing fingers (Game of Thrones...).
From the moment they were born, they had more money than they ever wanted. They just wanted to be successful and respected. They wanted to be strong and feared like their father. But they never achieved this dream.
I just realized how much Tom resembles Logan's build based on the younger actor that plays Logan in the opening credits. I don't think the connection is that Tom is replacing Logan by any means but he certainly got much closer than the children. This, and the actualization of Tom as this powerful CEO at the end -- a far cry from where he began and where the children ended up --, says so much about Shiv.
Tom was foreshadowed to replace Logan from the very beginning. Upon rewatch, there's lots of subtle parallels between them. Both struggled to get to where they are, both had shitty relationships, both were snakey and used others to their advantage. Tom was different to everyone else in that he knew what it meant to be at the bottom and claw your way to the top, something the kids would never understand.
@@RileyWriteyIt’s funny how what Logan perceived as a weakness, that Tom was far beneath Shiv, was actually a strength he should’ve remembered. Logan was also a low class young man who built himself into a rich powerhouse. His kids were handicapped from their rich lifestyle because they never had to truly struggle in the workplace. Tom did, as did Logan.
I haven’t watched a single episode of Succession, but seeing this clip after visiting New York and Battery Park park for the first time is just so cool
POST CREDIT SCENE Kendall comes home late at night, tosses his keys on the table and sits down, staring at the floor. Suddenly, a man steps out of the shadows. It is the legendary Nick Fury. Fury: Mr Roy. I’m looking to put together a team…
Kendall Roy was such a tragic character. No family. No Kingdom. He's just forever a lost man. I know the general consensus is that Shiv screwed him. But in reality Ken screwed himself so many times with his arrogance and pride that he lost everything. He would've been a horrible CEO. He just wanted the power because he had nothing else.
honestly don't understand rooting for a person who was ok, that someone (his boss) wanted to fuck his wife and was telling that looking in his eyes. But hey, I understand your point!
Ironically, Tom was the one who was actually doing the most work to become CEO whether it was right or wrong whereas the Roy siblings (apart from Roman who actually did some work) just kept arguing and begging Logan to pick them for the position because they felt they "earned it" just for being his children.
that moment where shiv just stares at Tom’s outstretched hand knowing he’s taken everything she ever wanted (despite the fact she treated him badly) absolutely breaks me
@@DontTakeThisSeriously616 the fact that none of the kids were part of the meeting Logan had before he decided to sell the company is proof that he never trusted his children to be able to take over. Which in the end was true, they were never serious. Shiv was the closest based on her hunger for power. The older brother (the real eldest), would also have been a good choice but he was too apolitical and never participated in any of the hard decision-making. Regarding Ken, he is an addict. They are impulsive and driven by addiction. Not good at business decisions. Always taking huge risks and will replace one addiction for another. Addicts are for life. No matter how much empathy you feel for him, it doesn't change the fact that he's not a good candidate. In the final episode, he was so desperate, he lied about the murder to change shivs vote. @@DontTakeThisSeriously616 I don't understand why your two ideal CEO's is an addict / murderer whos fatal flaw is relapsing everytime he experiences hardships, and the other is a sexual deviant that harasses older women in the company and leaves the company at risk to lawsuits by firing people without due process. Tom and shiv is the ideal ending. They've never been in a crackhouse. They've never murdered anyone. They have a clean past. Nobody can blackmail them or use anything against them to taint the company name. You're underestimating logan. The company exists because of his brilliance. I will agree that he wasn't a good father which is why his children haven't matured into well-adjusted adults. Do not forget that Kendall was divorced since season 1 and we later learned why his ex left him. So this addiction isn't new behaviour that started with the company drama. It was well established over a long period of time. LASTLY, shiv didn't betray Kendall because of any personal feelings. The final nail in the coffin was when he lied about the murder, that turned both shiv and Roman against him. Re-watch that final boardroom scene. Some even argue that Kendall losing means he can go back home and be a better father.
It just struck me now that the bodyguard walking next to Kendall is the one who called him to his father in S1 finale. It's as if his father is still watching him even after his death.

so true, literally me
Exactly this. The fact that it mirrors Logan's final walk so closely, also through the park, really hammers this home: in both cases, we see a billionaire, with a level of status most covet and can only dream of, yet we see them alone and pensive, sad and wondering if it was all pointless, what's left.

Kendalls character touches everyone who believes they can but ultimately didn't get to do that thing. Very well portrayed.

Most people forget this interpretation of Roman's finale. Film rarely ever shows us what happens to the countless souls that bet it all on one dream, and fail. There is no nobility in failure. Only shards of what was once your undesired life.

I'm sure we've known it for a long time that none of the kids is suited to be the leader. They're utterly broken people. We were just waiting to see if they would ever get any better, and they never did. So the empire is probably better off with Mattson.

This scene, the music, the lives split… perfect 🥹🙏

Great comment! Expertly stated
Money can give you a greater chance of attaining happiness. But at the end of the day, it's certainly not a guarantee.

i love the paradox that came with ken's final scene with him being soaked in blinding sunlight but it was partnered with the sound of waves crashing. it symbolizes how kendall feels abt his new found "freedom". the sun is there which is what his dad tried to metaphorically sacrifice him to and the water which is the element that he always tried to kill himself with. in the end, he was dominated by both forces. he could never win !!
it's so poignantly poetic.
What are you talking about his romantic life with Gregg is just fine lol
Also, it really shows that The Roys are just not completely ready to take over the company. They all sharing the same childhood for being neglected by their father and they all still suffering their PTSD until adulthood. All of them are still mentally unstable and their situation is so bad, the company took over by another person. Even Kendall who tried to act tough like Logan is still a broken man. Shiv with her brains and manipulation and also lack of love with Tom is accepting the defeat that she is becoming CEO's wife forever. Roman is too laidback and too chill, he's just simply not ready.

Tom is unfortunately a puppet
Tom was economically below Shiv and the family as a whole. Brain wise, a few steps ahead of the "kids," including his very immature wife.@@alexman378
I haven’t watched a single episode of Succession, but seeing this clip after visiting New York and Battery Park park for the first time is just so cool
Easily one of the best endings in tv show history.
Year later, I am still hunted for my number one boy.
POST CREDIT SCENE
Kendall comes home late at night, tosses his keys on the table and sits down, staring at the floor. Suddenly, a man steps out of the shadows. It is the legendary Nick Fury.
Fury: Mr Roy. I’m looking to put together a team…
eww anything but marvel
The way they touch hands cracked me up 😂. Tom and Shiv in a nutshell.
Kendall Roy was such a tragic character. No family. No Kingdom. He's just forever a lost man. I know the general consensus is that Shiv screwed him. But in reality Ken screwed himself so many times with his arrogance and pride that he lost everything. He would've been a horrible CEO. He just wanted the power because he had nothing else.
my boy tommy really came out on top, starting rooting for him in season 3. so glad he won
same but root for him since season 2
honestly don't understand rooting for a person who was ok, that someone (his boss) wanted to fuck his wife and was telling that looking in his eyes. But hey, I understand your point!
I worry for people who find characters to root for in this show.
@@Mocsk Tom! Tom! Tom!
Ironically, Tom was the one who was actually doing the most work to become CEO whether it was right or wrong whereas the Roy siblings (apart from Roman who actually did some work) just kept arguing and begging Logan to pick them for the position because they felt they "earned it" just for being his children.
that moment where shiv just stares at Tom’s outstretched hand knowing he’s taken everything she ever wanted (despite the fact she treated him badly) absolutely breaks me
@@DontTakeThisSeriously616no. She did what her dad would have done. The company would fail under Kendall. She made the right decision.
Tom is weak. Which is why he is CEO. They wanted someone they can control. A puppet. And shiv will continue to use him.

@@DontTakeThisSeriously616 I read this whole thing and have no regrets. Great analysis! 😊
I feel bad for Colin.
Yeah he is now babysitting a suicide person and drug addict but at least he got a new job

1:28. Bruh. This show is so good.
"Life isn't nice. It's contingent. People who say they love you also fuck you."
It just struck me now that the bodyguard walking next to Kendall is the one who called him to his father in S1 finale. It's as if his father is still watching him even after his death.
Like a modern day Game of Thrones, everyone vying for the 'crown'
