High Speed Sync and How it Works - Lighting Tutorial

  • To understand high speed sync, we need to understand how shutters work. Most camera shutters are two curtains that open and close. I know there are some cameras with a leaf shutter but that is for a different lesson. At speeds slower than 1/125th, or 1/60th depending on your camera, the first curtain open completely before the second curtain begins to close. At faster the first curtain of the shutter opens and before it is completely open the second curtain starts to follow it and close. This means that there is no time that the sensor is open to light all at once. A small slit travels across the sensor exposing the frame it as it goes. If your strobe goes off during this time, it show a black bar at the bottom of the frame, basically the part of the image that was not exposed to the strobe flash.
    High speed sync solves this problem by firing the strobe in pluses as the first curtain opens and continues to pulse until after the second curtain closes. It happens so fast that the sensor perceives the flash as continuous light.
    The upside is that you can shoot at fast shutter speeds keeping your strobe synced with the camera, allowing you to shoot with a wide open aperture in bright light situations and giving you a nice shallow depth of field. You can also strobe light your subject and then crush the BG with the shutter making your subject stand out. Remember: shutter controls ambient light and we match the aperture to the power of the strobes.
    Let’s look at our shoot in downtown Los Angeles. We took beautiful Angela Whitworth downtown and shot on Grand Ave. In LA you can get a permit that allows you to shoot on the street as long as you aren’t blocking traffic or the sidewalks. I am shooting on my Canon 5D Mark III, starting with a Tamron 24-70mm lens. The camera settings are ISO 320, shutter 1/500th of a second at F4.5. The key light is a medium, silver lined soft box. It will give us nice highlights on her skin. We put a full orange (CTO) on the light and I will shoot on Tungsten for my white balance. We will allow the shadow exposure to be bright enough so the shows are blue on her face.
    That is it. One Baja B4 with a full CTO.
    I did a few shots at the end with another light as a rim. I used the back of a mirror as a bounce board under her chin to open up some of the shadows.
    I hope you learned something about high speed sync today - how it works and how you can manipulate the background light with your shutter while still getting enough light on the subject. Keep those cameras rollin’ and keep on clickin’.

    Jay P., I finally gave in and purchased my Baja B4 after watching this video. I used it for the first time this weekend and it performed like a charm - and NO cables! Yay! I was on the beach in Toronto with a monoblock, just great stuff. Paired with a 80x100cm softbox, the light was dreamy. Thanks for the info.

    Another great video from this channel that I was able to get some screenshots of equipment and set-ups from. I still have to use speedlights and variable ND-- and hope the subject doesn't plan on moving faster than 1/200 second, but that's alright.
    You gotta love the people complaining about these demo pictures even though the thumbnail is what brought most of them in... (That, or people just really don't know what HSS is and were drawn in by the technical promise of the title).

    Thanks for all your video assistance to make all my pictures look good. Talking about Flash High Sync, this a good way to shot in DSLR above 1/4000 with flash. To shoot high speed 1/4000 or above, is not necessary Flash Slave Trigger Hot Shoe Sync Adapter. The only thing that you need is a flash with High Sync, Camera with flash sync speed option. First mount your flash on top of your camera, set it up to Manual or ETTL mode full power, enable the H sync. turn on the strobes or flashes synchronized to slave 1. Thats it.

    I just testing these and am finding you can't really use HSS above 1/4000th because of the falloff. This means that you are not going to be able to over power full sunlight in a situation you might end up in sadly. however the recycle time is much better than the off brand units I had purchased to test a couple months ago.

    You can also achieve the same effect-using an - ND1.2 - 4/f Stop Neutral
    Density Filter if you normally set your flash exposure to F/11 you
    would then set your aperture to F/2.8 when using a - 4/f Stop Neutral
    Density Filter. This gives you exactly the same exposure but
    significantly less depth of field.

    Is there really a need for HS sync in this shoot? You can easily change ISO 320 at 1/500s to ISO 100 at 1/160s and keep the same f stop. The 5DIII he is using is fully capable of syncing at 1/160s. Am I missing something?

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  9 років тому

      aluzexp I used ISO 320 for this particular shoot because it was a little overcast the day of the shoot. If it had been a bright sunny day, I would have dropped my ISO to 100 but 1/160 would have been too bright for the background.

    Good points to know, that HSS decreases the light output and drains batteries faster. I kept it turned ON all the time even when my shutter is less than 200, which is not a good thing to do. Lesson learnt. Thanks.

    What's the downside to using a Variable ND filter instead of HSS? Obviously HSS will work with fast-paced action, where a VND filter will not, but for portraits this is not an issue.

    • @michaelayap1782
      @michaelayap1782 5 років тому

      Using nd filters will degrade the quality of image because you are adding element in your lens it makes the background dark and so is the subject. So you still need flash when shooting portraits

    Such shot can be easily taken by normal TTL settings. If you are not darkening the background by exposing the subject i dont think HSS is required. With HSS you can have increased the shutter speed till 1/4000 to 1/8000 to get some better HSS shots.

    I have learn so much watching your tutorials. Here is what I have learned through try and error: You need remote triggers (No all are high sync capable) and you need some strobes (No all are high sync capable) and finally you need a fast lens. By using the youngnuo 568 EX $ 70.00 and some Viltrox FC210 triggers $ 40.00, and a $ 30.00 reflector I have been able to get some very good shots in a budget. Canon 5D Mark II with Canon 85mm F/1.8 prime.

      I'm sorry, Robert. My goal wasn't to put anyone down, I was simply stating my opinion. The purpose of these videos is to use what I have learned to hopefully help others learn as well, so I definitely wouldn't say that my videos are meant to be the final rule on photography. Instead they are my take on what works and doesn't work in this business.Thanks for your feedback!

    Would be nice to have so many assistants and so much gear.. :)
    All my outdoor shots at www.allansinclair.com were done w/1 YN flash (100) and the indoor ones w/1 flashpoint strobe (199)..

      People may fire 50cal bullets at me but... I personal have found "cheap" equipment to work just as good if not BETTER than the high cost premium stuff. I can care less if you spend $80k on your setup. I've seen $3,000 knock out better pictures than this lol

      Pretty much the reason why I unsubscribed from this channel.
      Not only is his style of presentation a tad bit annoying (his way of talking and explaining things REALLY grinds my gears), but his photos and examples are just outright terrible compared to the gear masturbation that he does.

    Sure HSS is a great feature. Great shoot BTW.
    But for that setup, the result of 1/500s f4.5 iso320 can be easily achave by using iso100 1/160s f4.5. HSS is a waste in this shoot.

      I respect your opinion but it is not good to judge it that is not useful...because simply i learned a lot from it as I didn't know what is HSS and the video explained it pretty well and better than many other videos

    Hi, its obvious your are a quite highly qualified photographer with very expensive camera and equipment. I have just purchased a SB-910 speedflash and Camera Nikon D5500 I can tell you that it will not sync to 1/1500 of a second. high speed. and if I were to shoot high speed as you say, my battery would last only for 10 shots max.

    • @dkirk335
      @dkirk335 7 років тому

      The SB-910 does do high speed sync but it puts out very little power in doing so and could not be used for a model shoot like this. www.nikonusa.com/en/learn-and-explore/a/tips-and-techniques/using-auto-fp-high-speed-sync-to-illuminate-fast-sports-action.html

      +Kevin Costello That is a pretty funny video! The How to Estimate a Shoot video that you can purchase here (theslantedlens.com/how-to-estimate-a-shoot/) lays out all the information you need in order to avoid costly mistakes. It is the guide I use to create quotes for all of my productions.

    High speed sync as it applies to on camera flash would be of far more value to the people watching UA-cam. I shunned it for years as an unreliable gimmick. Lately I've been exploring it and it's interesting. The sun makes a great hair light.

    why didn't you shoot at ISO 100 if you wanted to underexpose the background... instead you shot at ISO 320 and then uses HSS for the sake of using HSS... what are you even doing?
