zigzagman blam Yeah it figures too. I reckon that's where his legato solo style emerges from. And of course Holdsworth became a L42 member briefly later, as you know.....Boon must've thought 'what??' :)
I agree that they were really as much level 42 as mark and mike. Mark and mike are great now (really great!) but 1980-1987 was really level 42. This proves it! Thanks for posting!
Exactly. Something mysterious comes over me when I hear The Bass of Mark King. I'm like Balou, the bear in Jungle Book. "O man... I'm gone... Real Gone..."
That's how all us fans got into it in the first place. Going back to '81, '82....worrrrr listen to that bass (heads to the record shop and buys Pursuit Of Accidents) :)
They are absolutely on fire here. Micro Kid sounding well THICK. Especially the last minute of it. They're ROCKIN'! Boon's solo here is one of his best too. Correction: Just watched it again, it IS his best! Well played Boon, wherever you are! This is how I think of Level 42 live. TIGHT. Phil Gould's tasteful compactness....and Mark with that sound and his dh-gh-dg-GAH!
Phenomenal live performance from a phenomenal band. But WHY didn't Mike Lindup get more attention in this live performance?! After all he was an integral part of the song, at least with his falsetto vocals. He doesn't deserve to be overlooked.
The best from the band ...middle 80', Gould bros.....waouw.....the TOP...Level 43 !!!! Have this old live in Printemps de Bourges on VHS !!!!!! Crazy !!!! Who saw Mark King live flying on air and playing a solo on "Running in the Family" tour ???? I remember this !!!! What a showman .....and don't forget the bubble gum...Yaawwww :-)))))) Thx for add Morgan, Levely yours: Antoine
Proud owner of a Jaydee King Bass from the late 80’s. Modern Status I feel doesn’t do the original sound justice but I do think the Alembic has a beautiful tone in its own way
I've already got the 2 In 1 Level 42 Gigs from Rockpalast which they eventually converted on to DVD & in wide-screen many year's ago & I'm glad they did so as my VHS Versions were deteriorating to the point I knew they'd either end up snapped/chewed up in the VCR or unwatchable as I played those 2 Gigs from the Rockpalast Shows constantly to study Marks style of playing percussively on his bass guitar... Why Mark still persists with those Status Bass Guitar's is just beyond me... As apart from the addition of the Tru Bend or Bend Well on the neck to bend notes or harmonic notes with ease is the only thing I really like about Rob Green's Bass Guitar's as they just can't match John Diggings Supernatural Series Bass Guitar's overall sounds... It would be great if he went back to the JD Supernatural Series of bass guitar's for their 40th Anniversary Tour which kicks off in October 2020 but I think he'll continue (unfortunately) with Rob Green's range of Status Bass Guitar's... I hope fellow Level 42 fans worldwide get a chance to see them on their 40th Anniversary Tour as I know from looking at comments on UA-cam for many year's now that there are still Countries & Cities that fans want them to play there as they haven't gotten round to it yet & I do hope those fan's eventually get to see them Live as they are one of thee best bands that are still going as strong as they were from those early year's right up until now, albeit with different line ups through those years to fill in for those who left... RIP Boon Gould RIP Alan Murphy "Sadly Gone, But Never Forgotten" .....
UA-cam Is An Influencer Mark King has messed on with different basses, set-ups, sounds over the years and, apart from endorsement reasons, I can'r see why. Many great guitar players stick with not only the manufacturer but the same guitar throughout their career. It seems crazy that Mark left the JD behind in favour of these other things that light up on the neck but sound like an elastic band stretched on a cardboard box.
@@davidsanderson5918 My point exactly... Even his John Diggins aka JD Supernatural Series line up of bass guitar's had built in leds once Level 42 had become a household name, so it's not as if Status started thst craze off... Though Mark denies this I think those Status Bass Guitar's that he's worked with Rob Green on (the founder of Status) are part of an endorsement deal... Apart from some acts in the late 80s into the 90 the only person that uses Status constantly is Mark King & who better to be your poster boy for your range of Status Guitar's... I'll admit the Bend Well or True Bend that was designed up at the headstock has been a great innovation for bending individual or more than 1 bass strings or harmonicially hit bass strings you could bend also, but apart from that which was about 15 years ago there has been no improvement on the sound side of the Status Bass Guitar's... I owned a Status years ago & for other bass sounds I'll admit they were good but once you switch to the back pick up & try to emulate that signature JD Sound then alas Status just can't cut it... All my friends who've went to sent him Live with me through all these year's agree as sometimes the sound doesn't translate well on a DVD & even if you have the best surround sound system it doesn't matter as you need to hear him play these bass guitar's live to really hear them & they just can't cut it... In fact I was due to go with my friend this October on the 7th which was the exact date we last saw Level 42 Live back in 2016 but this year this Tour is in celebration of their 40th Anniversay but with this coronavirus dragging on I doubt we'll see them this year as we have a more serious & pressing issue of getting this covid-19 under control... But my point was the last time I saw them was back on the 7th October 2016 & though the band played a blinding set of amazing hits & other lesser played tracks at such a high level of musicianship the one thing that ruined it for me was Mark's sound from his Status Bass Guitar as it's the worst I've ever heard his sound in all the times I've went to see them Live & his only saving grace was it to me was the PA's fault... As his Status sounded like it was being played through too many Sub Woofers & the overall sound which was usually light & tinny was now muddled & dense & if I had not known those bass lines off by heart I would've struggled to make out what he was playing as it was the worst I've ever heard his bass sound live... In the 80s Mark had been saying for year's that he that didn't need the use of effects pedals that much, which was true, as he's usually use a chorus or flanger pedal & maybe 1 other pedal like a graphic equaliser to boost his bass sound at certain levels & through the year's fans would say to him at Bass Shows why don't you use more pedals his reply was always the very basic & simple reply of " I don't feel the need to use then " You have to remember this was at a stage when a lot of UK Bands bassists were using more pedals like the UK Band " Muse " bassist Chris Wolstenholme was using distortion or fuzz pedals along with digital delay pedals & then suddenly at some point Mark is suddenly using TC Electronic's Effects Pedals & he is their Poster Boy & is seen more & more using loop & digital delay pedals to come up with overlapping bass lines live as part of his bass solo's or noodling... Sure Mark had used TC Electronic before but, & this is the part i don't understand, it's not as if fans will suddenly dislike him or call him a show off as Mark along with the rest of the lads from Level 42 are down to earth approachable & funny guys but Mark definitely tends to get very protective when asked about why he uses Status & TC Electronics, as it's not as if anyone would say that's out of order playing those Status bass guitars & using those TC Electronic pedals as musicians have been doing it for decades & no one really bothers if they are doing that as Bill's need to be paid & if he's getting paid for using certain gear good on him but again I don't know why he always says he doesn't use them for that reason when you can clearly see through the year's that he has... Either way he's an amazing bassist & also amazing on drums/Lead & Rythmn & Acoustic Guitar as well as Keyboards & various other instruments... It shows you how talented he & his brother Nate (who took the lead guitar role back in 2001) are when the late Boon Gould said on first meeting Mark that he could play better than him on Lead & Rythmn Guitar, now that's saying something but musicians back then usually always played more than 1 instrument as it helped their overall grasp of music & helped them get more work if they were session or sideman players... Mark is like a white equivalent of Prince & like the late Prince he never throws this up into people or fans faces... As ive said I doubt anyone will get to see Level 42 as even my prediction of having this coronavirus under control by August is looking unlikely & with that I'll add in light of the coronavirus outbreak stay safe and healthy where ever you in this world... All The Best... .....
I love Mark's bass in drop D. So thick. There's chorus on it here too, isn't there? Love it. Much prefer these TV recordings to the company-produced DVDs.
Half the band are different, of course. The true Level 42. Phil's drum patterns are so tight but allow so much room for everything. Boon's guitar parts are practically pointillist (note I said pointillist, not pointless!!!). Plus the music was fresh and there was that lovely linearity and sleekness to it. I saw them that year as well as on the True Colours tour which brought about the live album. Best period for me. Post "Standing In The Light", pre "Running In The Family." Seems like yesterday. The band has middle-age spread these day
Amazing B :LINE although not my most fav ,it is the most creative baseline for the song ..i mean he tries to make it sound like a computer tweaking out . pure genius , and bitchin to boot . best frontman ever.
Just to clarify. People compare and contrast this to the Microkid (live) on the B side of "To Be With You Again" 12"....but both live versions are the same. Same arrangement, sax doubling the bassline, same fills, same sections. Different nights, of course. And different recording quality. That said, personally I prefer the quality of this performance to the 12" copy. It may be lo-fi but I actually like the natural sound of the venue causing everything to hack round the place. Especially the JD clank. :)
Oh man, what they had what they gave these years was almost exactly what all new successful bands was experiencing back then (now?). The pressure broke them down, only if they had this "fuck off" thing in somewhere, they'ed come back! Yeah!
Mats Frånlund They had this sweaty slappy energy for a good seven or eight years though. So many reasons why they couldn't keep that up. But at least we've got the clips and things like the Rockpalast DVD to enjoy them at their gurning, edgy best.
Bang goes the JD indeed R42, 'tis THE Level 42 bass. Ahhh guys why did you have to fall out? Someone should have banged your heads together and told you to grow up. Still, I know know who Gary Husband is so there is a massive positive!
Andrewand7 I don't remember it as a falling out. Certainly no acrimony. The new direction by 1987 as far as I understood didn't suit Phil and Boon....which didn't surprise me, Boon and Phil were not really pop celeb types.
Yeah I'm appreciating her here too. Switching between two registers to harmonise below Mike in the bridge then singing an octave above Mark in the chorus. They worked her hard there!
Achenar Myst No he isn't. Just watched it again to check (which I enjoyed of course!). His rhythm parts and little clucks are all bang on. His solo has chromatic notes and bends which momentarily go out... but his guitar doesn't need tuning up!! He's good to go. Boon wherever you are, how was that?? Well played mate.
Boon reminds me of Allan Holdsworth. I really miss the Gould brother's. They were as much Level 42 as Mark King. They were the band that inspired me.
zigzagman blam Yeah it figures too. I reckon that's where his legato solo style emerges from. And of course Holdsworth became a L42 member briefly later, as you know.....Boon must've thought 'what??' :)

Jaydee.........The Stradivarius of the Bass World !!
Mikes vocoder-solo is fantastic!
My god, that BASS!
Exactly. Something mysterious comes over me when I hear The Bass of Mark King. I'm like Balou, the bear in Jungle Book. "O man... I'm gone... Real Gone..."
Love this Level 42 setting with Mike Lindup and the gould brothers !!!!
@Ry42Back Agreed. That pop at 0:53 combined with Mark's wall of Traces most likely took out the first three rows.
39 years ago...still rocking !!!
Still awesome in 2023!
France 1986, bourges...remerber this guitar solo ...rip boon
Marcus Lambert Yeah....I just commented in it too. GREAT solo from Boon.
The bass is so busy on the L42 tracks its just crazy!
That's how all us fans got into it in the first place. Going back to '81, '82....worrrrr listen to that bass (heads to the record shop and buys Pursuit Of Accidents) :)
The remarkable bass goes back to the Early Tapes (July/August 1980) with the song "Autumn (Paradise is Free)" as a prime example.
They are absolutely on fire here. Micro Kid sounding well THICK. Especially the last minute of it. They're ROCKIN'! Boon's solo here is one of his best too. Correction: Just watched it again, it IS his best! Well played Boon, wherever you are!

Super solo of Boon Gould and magic Les Paul sound!
This Key board solo and middle 8 and the end was used at the Dublin Concert of Feb 1988 What a gem
I love the jayDee clank... Status tried.. failed... Alembic came close... Failed.
Maybe it's due to compression setting that give this attack and the clank sound, because it's not hard to get on any bass with very hard fretboard
Proud owner of a Jaydee King Bass from the late 80’s. Modern Status I feel doesn’t do the original sound justice but I do think the Alembic has a beautiful tone in its own way
Marcus Lambert I think it's got chorus on it. So it's thick as well as having all that top that he likes.
My favourite version of this
Mark King the best I love you mark King for ever ❤
Me too!!❤❤❤
RIP Boon.
The Jaydee sounds so good in this clip. Good share.
Great band i saw this line up 7 times fantastic or should i say funktastic

Love everything about this!
One of the best bassist,s in the world
One of the absolute best tune of all times ! Quite better live ! Except the brass synth sound loll. Thanks for upload.
Good God this funky! Boon's solo is crazy!
The modern version of the band does not have this kind of snap!!!
I understand what you're saying there .. but they were young then ...
Yeah... To be compared with your youthful self is indeed a harsh judgement. Forty years takes its toll in ways which are indescribable.
Half the band are different, of course. The true Level 42. Phil's drum patterns are so tight but allow so much room for everything. mike's vocoder solo is everything to me
keep up the good work Morgan. thanks.

Micro Kind. Love that.
wow this also is great Morgan !!!! :)
This was put on their greatest hits album here in the States called LEVEL BEST around 1990--that recorded version is better
Greg White The mix of the recorded one is better. Personally I think this performance has better moments and better energy.

It's the make of his bass - a Jaydee bass.
Love the fill at 1:16
The genius of Mark king - so subtle to most but so obvious to us!

Sooo funky! 😍
@SamBAss42 Awesome!
Mike Lindup's vocal sections are much harder to sing here - he has to go from falsetto to main voice and back. Not easy!
Became level,40 when boon and phil left..what would I give for a jaydee, it sounds unreal.

In their prime!
haha look at marks face at 1:27-1:28 just chompin on gun as usual
Herbie Han...sorry, the brilliant Mike Lindup on keys and that J.D just rattles!!
BOON!!!
Only PG would play that fill at 5:17
ameliasophia1 Astonishing isn't it? Better than the live Microkid on the B side of "To Be With You Again" too.
Mark King mago do baixo
i want a les paul.

Miss Phil and Boon. Also could eliminate the gal backup singer - not on key.
Is this at Glastonbury?
this is in france
+Discordinated brad lee I didn't see the intro with the glasses of wine. That can only be France. Thank you Lee
Oops. Acciendentally posted a comment twice. Embarrasing...
the harmony with the vocals are close together you may sound out of tune . Vocally this music is hard work
Boon out of tune ☹️
