When it comes to police dogs, everybody seems ooohh and ahhh about the Shepherds. Does anybody ever credit those two sniffing dogs and their excellent noses? It takes a lot of focus and energy for them performing in crowded places like airports, where scents must be overwhelming. Just a little reminder: One of these dogs can save hundreds of lives, detecting explosives at the right time.
For me, they are the heroes of this presentation.

Have you seen the video where one police force is trialling a couple of corgis as sniffer dogs. They are low to the ground and can get into areas larger ones have problems getting into - specially under seats - but in large crowds with children they are also unthreatening so you don't have panicked people making things worse. Haven't seen any updates but they had passed their training with flying colours - very intelligent dogs - and were going out on probation. Only problem is they aren't able to walk in huge crowds [size issue no other reason] so their handlers have a little harness that they carry the dogs in on their backs. Last I heard they were doing well and if it was a success they were hoping to train up more corgis. And in Africa they are training giant rats - incredibly intelligent, live longer than the usual rat, really really cute especially in their little vests with their harness and lead - to sniff out explosives and drugs. Again because they are small enough to get into areas larger sniffer dogs can't access.

Nice to see they don't exclude "Coated shepherds" from their service. They have all of the drive and attitude of the standard coat, with the added benefit of being more intimidating when lit up. I love shepherds and have owned 2 coated, both of them square backed and strong, unlike a lot of the conformation GSD's the breeders seem to prefer these days.

    • @Apple-ct9wc

I train police dogs myself and the reason why we don’t use “coated” shepherds is because of the extra grooming care. These dogs are already a hand full but if you also have to do all the grooming...

Working dogs are built the way the dogs "SHOULD" be ! I wish departments in the US would have their own breeding programs like others do.. But nooo🤦 our departments look to save every penny possible, even when it comes to their k9s.. Which is also why we see ALLLOT of "incidents" with police dogs in America. What most people getting chased down by a dog fail to see is that running is the worst possible decision. You hype up the dog, and get it EVEN MORE willing to get you. Not only that, but you’re also giving it more distance to gain speed, and when that bite comes, it’ll be faster and harder.

    • @whoknowswho7494
      @whoknowswho7494 4 роки тому

@@nalabear97 You're right. Instinct is to run though. It would take huge balls to stand still, or even better, crouch down to the dog's level, cover your head and submit. The biggest take away is that dogs are grand beasts. Thank you for your input.

I'm sorry but banana backed Cruft certified GSD lineages can't run or walk very well or fast, or live in service for very long before needing to retire or suffering an injury of some type that debilitates them in some way. Give me a Russian/ Red Star bred German Shepherd dog every time.
They have structural integrity and longevity over other GSDs, don't have incorrect, weak, broken down or chair-leg pasterns/forelegs, or have a banana back and a mincing gate that forces their legs to rotate because of a body mechanics/ structural mechanical dysfunction due to crumpled scrunched up stiffles/knees which caused a lot of hip pain and sacroiliac joint dysfunction too btw. They walk on their back feet instead of their hocks and feet , and have low or no occurrences of hip dysplasia elbow dysplasia or luxating patella - not to mention no back problems.

The handlers have more control than you would think. These dogs are TRAINED to pull into their harnesses while working, and this event is work for them. When the dogs are at home they're a lot more docile and well mannered, but you have to remember what they're used for. The more of a show they put on while working the less they'll actually have to be released to bite, so if someone sees a big, pulling, snarling dog they're more likely to just give in and not run.
The dogs here are perfectly trained or are still in training, I've seen videos of police dogs from the US which can't be called off someone they're already biting, at least these dogs have amazing recall

They're NOT out of control, what they might lack in leash manners they make up for in recall. If they were to let one of those dogs off the leash you know for a fact they wouldn't run off, they're all taught the heel command. That's just stupid, they have no control over their dogs. The dog should be continuously looking back to it's handler for a command before going and not trying to pull out of her hands and run off like a crazy untrained dog. It shows because the dogs do not listen to the handler and let go when told to.

I heard german sheps have a fragile body structure, meaning that if someone kicks their ribs cage then probably the dog will be wrecked/knocked down.

I'm pretty sure all the bulldog-types can stand way more of that sort than any sheepdog. As they were actually bred to attach themselves to bulls and withstand being knocked about by a hurt bull…

Not so sure about that fully trained police dog having to be told 'out' 3 times. If you have to use your releaae word more than once, you need to go do more training around it. If my dog can release on the first command every time a police dog should be expected to as well. Yes it is very exciting and Demos are very stressful for owners, which can change the dogs behaviour but at the end of the day these are highly trained weapons and their training and precision should reflect that

The police shouldn't be allowed to have police dogs when they can't even control their selves. How many videos do people have to watch were the police can't even get the dog to release the person that they are trying to take into custody? I've seen some serious damage being done to people with these dogs.

@Blue Peter I can see you're clueless. No one should be disfigured by some dog that the handler can't control. They're are plenty of videos out there where people aren't resisting and still are being mauled by these dogs. Stop being brainwashed by police rhetoric and learn to think for yourself.

That's what I thought. That might be mostly so in the US, though. Here, the criminals do not have guns as a rule, and they certainly don't carry them all the time. Too dangerous, bc too illegal. Still I wonder why they don't put protective armor on their service dogs.

if an OFFICER bent down and bit a persons armpit and pulled at it for 2mins people would think that was INSANE..but the cops can get away with it by letting a dog do it for them..if a county hires a HUMAN cop that knowingly will tear at someones flesh and is hard to control during an arrest the county would be held liable ..but because it's a dog somehow it's no one's responsibility for the nature of the dog..thank god the cops don't use Tigers.. '.''well the Tiger killed another one Jim,. maybe we should feed them a bit more first'' ..good grief.. imagine pepper-spray that tore your flesh..that would be OUTLAWED..people's brains are in the mud when it comes to the use of police dogs for compliance issues WAKE UP

You won't have any problems if you do as you're told! If you don't break the law, attack officers, or go waving around knives you will be just fine. Would you rather be shot??? The vast majority of the times that K-9 units are called is for violent persons. Or those who run. DO NOT RUN OR YOU WILL BE BITTEN!!! The officers give a warning. So stop making excuses. We shouldn't have to live with criminal behavior.
Oh, and the dogs that find bombs. We don't need that for certain.
