Hey I wanna ask because this has been confusing me for a while, The Schutzhund method requires dogs to practice chewing on the sleeve. But criminals don't wear the sleeve so how do they know to bite down their arm?
When it comes to police dogs, everybody seems ooohh and ahhh about the Shepherds. Does anybody ever credit those two sniffing dogs and their excellent noses? It takes a lot of focus and energy for them performing in crowded places like airports, where scents must be overwhelming. Just a little reminder: One of these dogs can save hundreds of lives, detecting explosives at the right time. For me, they are the heroes of this presentation.
Have you seen the video where one police force is trialling a couple of corgis as sniffer dogs. They are low to the ground and can get into areas larger ones have problems getting into - specially under seats - but in large crowds with children they are also unthreatening so you don't have panicked people making things worse. Haven't seen any updates but they had passed their training with flying colours - very intelligent dogs - and were going out on probation. Only problem is they aren't able to walk in huge crowds [size issue no other reason] so their handlers have a little harness that they carry the dogs in on their backs. Last I heard they were doing well and if it was a success they were hoping to train up more corgis. And in Africa they are training giant rats - incredibly intelligent, live longer than the usual rat, really really cute especially in their little vests with their harness and lead - to sniff out explosives and drugs. Again because they are small enough to get into areas larger sniffer dogs can't access.
Nice to see they don't exclude "Coated shepherds" from their service. They have all of the drive and attitude of the standard coat, with the added benefit of being more intimidating when lit up. I love shepherds and have owned 2 coated, both of them square backed and strong, unlike a lot of the conformation GSD's the breeders seem to prefer these days.
I train police dogs myself and the reason why we don’t use “coated” shepherds is because of the extra grooming care. These dogs are already a hand full but if you also have to do all the grooming...

@@barbaravance6774 police dogs are great for certain things and HORRIBLE for others ..we keep using them badly is the main problem..there is an ENDLESS stream of videos of K-9 attacking innocent people solely because the handler couldn't control his woofy partner or down right let the dog lose for a simple compliance issue.. are these stories just part of the cost of doing business with a police force with dogs? ua-cam.com/video/d2tTXYj6Hk8/v-deo.html
