I really love how the older desks/studies are nice and wide! It's a stunning desk and I love the setup of it and of your room as well. I also find the pocket size my favorite, I love that it fits perfectly in the palm of my hand. It's kinda comforting to see you back in a chic sparrow pocket and with the brass kaweco as well :)

Lovely! Just a couple of observations from a antique/furniture restorer who made his living in the trade for many years. Hopefully this may be helpful. Your desk is a quarter sawn golden oak knee hole desk that I would date from the late 1880s through the early 1940s. I would need to look at it more closely to really tie down an accurate date span, but from what I am seeing in your video that is my estimation. It also appears that at one time the desk was vaneered. Probably with a white/golden oak vaneer which means that it would have been considered a nice and likely expensive desk for its time. People, back in the day, loved the look of vaneers as you would not see the seams of the planks of wood. The top and the pull outs would have been smooth and the grains of the oak would have been matched together creating a very finished and smooth surface. You can see that the top is made of solid wood that is cased; meaning that there are planks that are framed on the outside by other pieces of oak, much like a picture frame. Typically a furniture maker would have used a less expensive wood like pine under the vaneer, but in this case they used solid white/golden oak. Nice! You can see that on the pullouts the maker used an outside casing of oak, but an interior of pine on the right leaf and I am not sure what the interior wood is on the left pull out. Again, indicative of vaneering. Also, vaneer had a tendency to dry out over time and begin to chip and therefore folks would remove the vaneer for the esthetics. If there was a nice wood (as yours is) under the vaneer, people would remove the vaneer, smooth, stain, and finish the base wood and it would turn out like yours. Beautiful. Also, as I look more closely at the top of your desk, (I took a screen shot and blew it up) I am noticing that there is a slight space between the outside frame and the interior top planks. This desk could have also had a leather top as the space would have been used to drive the edge of the leather into to keep it in place and create a finished look. But again, this is just a hypothesis. Either way, you have a really nice piece that someone has invested a lot of love in. Just another tidbit. In Europe, vaneers have always been desirable and are found on the finest antiques. Especially French and Austrian pieces which the makers would use the finest Rosewood and Flame Mahogany vaneers typically. However, vaneers became popular in the US because woods like oak, mahogany, and especially walnut became very expensive as the tree supply dwindled around the turn of the century into the 1920s and 30s. As I referenced before, in the case of your desk, you will notice that the base wood under the vaneer is solid white oak which I believe means that your desk was likely created before oak became really expensive. This helps to date the piece. Likely around the turn of the century. The right side opening was generally used for storing business machines like a typewriter and some of the desks from the 30s and 40s actually had a metal swing apparatus that bolted onto the machine and the interior of the cabinet side and allowed the user to raise and lower the machine to the correct user level for use without it actually sitting on the desk top and then return it to the storage cabinet. Anyway, hope this helps. And enjoy your lovely desk! There is something about a beautiful desk that sparks creativity! At least for me. I own three desks. Two S-Curve Rolltops and a delicate ladies writing desk. All in golden oak. Out of all the woods, it is my favorite. My Compliments! Richard
That desk is a beautiful addition to your home! and that lamp fits in well, too. I went with the Chic Sparrow Merian and I’m loving it for my A6 Leuchtturms. I just wish I could’ve found an A6 with Tomoe River paper, but my Goulet Pen Tomoe River and Galen Leather Everyday Pad--both in A5--will serve just fine for my ink explorations (I bought up a supply of both once I heard that there wouldn’t be any notebooks with Tomoe River paper).

Not going to lie, you totally inspired me to purchase the pocket size Chic Sparrow (I got a Derby) to go with an A6 Leuchtturm. I had originally tried to fit some other small inserts with it, but found that the Leuchtturm is just a little too big for that to work out, without it pulling on the other strings and stressing the holes in the cover. So, I went ahead and removed all but the passport sized insert I use for my grocery list and my A6 Leuchtturm. And I truly love it. I've used an A5 for my bullet journal (also now in a Derby) for almost 5 years, but I'm surprisingly fond of my new pocket sized notebook. So, thank you for the inspiration!
My Dad was a sportswriter covering the NY Giants in the 70s and he traveled with a small portable typewriter. He had a few of them around the house and I wish I had kept one. Live your colours...I'm old enough to remember having to learn type writing at school. I was really bad at it and during tests I would always ask the girl sitting next to me to give me her discarded sheets that she wasn't satisfied with, so I could hand in as mine...that's how fast she was and how slow I was 🤣🤣🤣

Same feelings about the small ink capacity but it's also my favorite fountain pen. Something in the weight, size and overall feel. The nib on mine is smooth with just the perfect amount of feedback. TL/DR - fantastic desk, space, home. Brilliant stuff Alicia 🤩 Now for the longer comment, 😂 the desk is just superb. That is the kind of desk I’d have if I even had space for one. A real, proper old desk from decades ago. Where they’re actually made from solid oak and stuff and not just veneered or pretend 🤔 That’s a perfect spot for your typewriter and journalling. Kaweco Brass - I have the same feelings for mine and like you I also have other larger capacity, gold nib pens too, but am always using my Brass Sport every day to write in my TN on Tomoe River paper (whilst I still have some left). I cannot put it down. I have a Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age and that gets left a lot and I’ll still pick up the Brass Sport. I have a thing for some metal pens. It really is the ideal travelling companion. Let’s see, expensive plastic Pilot Custom 823 to travel with, or rock solid Brass Sport and cartridges? No contest. 😃👍🏻
In my fantasy house, I'll have a small office and a proper desk. I like your new (to you) desk. I currently use a desk that folds out from the wall. I love your idea of using the desk as a bedstand. I would need a smaller desk to fit my bedroom, but it would be a great use of space! One of my bedstands is a folding wooden TV tray. I would happily replace it. I saw your new typewriter and it's a beauty. Are you keeping your typewriters or trading them in or what are you doing with them. Since I'm 75 I'm quite familiar with typewriters from the manuals to the electrics and then we went in the computers I do and I don't miss my typewriter... Beautiful desk! Great find, congratulations 👏🏻. I recently purchased a Kaweco AL Sport in Rose Gold, mostly because of your admiration for yours. I was hesitant, but ended up getting it and it is a really nice writer, I am glad I got it. I also recently purchased a Lochby A5 journal and I love it and it has helped me to happily journal, which has been great, so I now understand how important it is to love a journal cover.

Fab desk which makes me sad that the rise of the computer has been accompanied by the fall of the truly lovely office desk. The slide-out extensions remind me that once upon a time we could adjust our space to suit our requirements - now we are expected to change our work methods to suit the design of our space. The best bit for me is those drawer dividers - genius!
I like your new desk! However, the title "New Desk" worried me that something might have happened to your other one. Love your taste in furniture and the beautiful "antiqued" patina to your Kaweco.
As someone who experienced manual hammer-and ribbon-based typing firsthand before it was any sort of "thing", and who after a few years was happy to graduate to motorized typing and later, to word processing, and who at present is perfectly content with click-y blue switch typing, it's still fun to see someone so young embracing old-school typing as a means of actual writing and not simply an aesthetic, as was done back in the day by the likes of Winchell, Hemingway and, well...me.

I lie the new desk, though that other desk of your’s is one I wish I could have gotten for myself. Unfortunately to set up to work at home I needed a bit more surface. The one good thing, if I move off my work stuff, it is a good surface to sew and other projects. I just want all those cubbies and drawers for my pens and inks. I can totally understand your love of that Kaweco. I have a copper Lilliput that I haven’t put away since I got it. Don’t love the small cartridges, but I did get a bulb style converter for it, just haven’t tried it out. I think it will at best hold .5ml of ink. I also got a brass Kaweco like yours, but I just haven’t rotated it into the mix yet. Probably when my other Sport finishes up its cartridge, I’ll swap them. Halfway through my Rhodia A5. I think the paper handles fountain pens better than my previous Leuchtturm. Less ghosting and bleeding of even my darkest wet inks. The Leuchtturm was better with pencils with more texture in the paper.

I just saw your video dated Jan 6, 2021 where you talk about your Adler J4 typewriter and also mention your Olympia in passing. Together with the green Rheinmetall, that makes at least three. So, apparently you have more than a passing interest in vintage typewriters. Nice to see how you incorporate diverse interests into a cohesive and satisfying philosophy. I acquired my first vintage typewriter, a 1953 Smith-Corona Silent and I'm looking at two others; one an Adler. I kinda feel that only one thing, no matter how rare or valuable or interesting, does not constitute a collection so I cannot legitimately label myself a collector. That may soon change. At any rate, after thirty years typing on a computer keyboard, my fingers are plenty nimble but not particularly strong. Thanks to the SC and hours of exercise, my pinky fingers are actually starting to develop actual muscles.
Hello and thank you! That is close to an A6, just a little narrower. It’s a Pocket size. Although, this particular notebook by Leuchtturm is usually listed as an A6. >.
Of all the “desks” I’ve ever had, none of them has ever actually been a desk. Right now my desk is a small antique maple table, of the sort you might use in a small kitchen or nook. It was my art table at some point too, and is paint stained and splattered.
@@adventuredenali I do use my table desk. My mom gave it to me, and it’s decent and sturdy and spacious. Not sure what happened with the original chairs over the years, there were only two. Right now I’m using a vintage bistro chair. I’d like to get a real, nice, comfy desk chair some day….but to be honest, I do the majority of my writing in bed! My dad just moved and gave me three pieces of furniture that I haven’t found room for yet, and one is an older drop leaf desk that also is sort of a hutch, with glass front doors. I don’t know how functional it will be, the actual drop down “desk” space is somewhat small, but it’s very nice, has all those little niches for storing stuff. Problem is, I have no room for it right now. I need to let go of the furniture I don’t really love! Most of it came from old beach houses, I had a boyfriend in the home remodeling business, and people were always giving him stuff. But I just have too much. I longingly watch minimalist decor videos….yet last night, at 2am, on my way home from work, I trash picked a really nice little wooden bookshelf unit and a small wood table, look to be from the 1960s. Neither of which I need!!! Love your Lascaux horse print
Looks like your typewriter desk is much too high. I remember desks for typewriters being lower than other desks because your arms should form a 90 degree angle for typing. Just a tip to avoid pain in your shoulders etc. Maybe you can cut the legs or at least sit higher. 😉 Edit: Ok, I watched more... it has no legs. Bummer.
I am getting some pretty serious 1940's/late 30's vibes from your lovely new desk, but if you ask on Fedora Lounge someone who is more knowledgeable than I am might be able to help you find what to look for to date it properly. There are some people there who restore old furniture and have a great wealth of knowledge. The handles are so beautiful, I can see why you fell in love with it!
did you ever take typing lessons at school....sure hope you know how to use all those 10 fingers to type...such a dream when you can learn where the fingers go ...seriously...typing has been around for many many years...and guess what...still a going with the keyboards on computers.

Where they’re actually made from solid oak and stuff and not just veneered or pretend 🤔 That’s a perfect spot for your typewriter and journalling.
Kaweco Brass - I have the same feelings for mine and like you I also have other larger capacity, gold nib pens too, but am always using my Brass Sport every day to write in my TN on Tomoe River paper (whilst I still have some left). I cannot put it down. I have a Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age and that gets left a lot and I’ll still pick up the Brass Sport. I have a thing for some metal pens. It really is the ideal travelling companion. Let’s see, expensive plastic Pilot Custom 823 to travel with, or rock solid Brass Sport and cartridges? No contest. 😃👍🏻
In my fantasy house, I'll have a small office and a proper desk. I like your new (to you) desk. I currently use a desk that folds out from the wall. I love your idea of using the desk as a bedstand. I would need a smaller desk to fit my bedroom, but it would be a great use of space! One of my bedstands is a folding wooden TV tray. I would happily replace it. So you have given me quite a good idea. Thank you for this video!
That desk is killer beautiful. Nice and solid. My favorite part besides the pull out boards on either side is of course the cart handles. I love oak furniture I love early oak furniture. I saw your new typewriter and it's a beauty. Are you keeping your typewriters or trading them in or what are you doing with them. Since I'm 75 I'm quite familiar with typewriters from the manuals to the electrics and then we went in the computers I do and I don't miss my typewriter... But they are so beautiful and such a wonderful piece of machinery and such a good memory that I do have an old one that I just adore. Be well and thanks for showing fig. Beautiful desk! Great find, congratulations 👏🏻. I recently purchased a Kaweco AL Sport in Rose Gold, mostly because of your admiration for yours. I was hesitant, but ended up getting it and it is a really nice writer, I am glad I got it. I also recently purchased a Lochby A5 journal and I love it and it has helped me to happily journal, which has been great, so I now understand how important it is to love a journal cover.

This one is a Rheinmetall from 1958. I honestly don’t know much about it, other than it’s a German brand.
Fab desk which makes me sad that the rise of the computer has been accompanied by the fall of the truly lovely office desk. The slide-out extensions remind me that once upon a time we could adjust our space to suit our requirements - now we are expected to change our work methods to suit the design of our space. The best bit for me is those drawer dividers - genius!

I also have a brass sport… I switched out the steel nib for the 14k replacement, it made all the difference.

I like your new desk! However, the title "New Desk" worried me that something might have happened to your other one. Love your taste in furniture and the beautiful "antiqued" patina to your Kaweco.
As someone who experienced manual hammer-and ribbon-based typing firsthand before it was any sort of "thing", and who after a few years was happy to graduate to motorized typing and later, to word processing, and who at present is perfectly content with click-y blue switch typing, it's still fun to see someone so young embracing old-school typing as a means of actual writing and not simply an aesthetic, as was done back in the day by the likes of Winchell, Hemingway and, well...me.

I lie the new desk, though that other desk of your’s is one I wish I could have gotten for myself. Unfortunately to set up to work at home I needed a bit more surface. The one good thing, if I move off my work stuff, it is a good surface to sew and other projects. I just want all those cubbies and drawers for my pens and inks. I can totally understand your love of that Kaweco. I have a copper Lilliput that I haven’t put away since I got it. Don’t love the small cartridges, but I did get a bulb style converter for it, just haven’t tried it out. I think it will at best hold .5ml of ink. I also got a brass Kaweco like yours, but I just haven’t rotated it into the mix yet. Probably when my other Sport finishes up its cartridge, I’ll swap them. Halfway through my Rhodia A5. I think the paper handles fountain pens better than my previous Leuchtturm. Less ghosting and bleeding of even my darkest wet inks. The Leuchtturm was better with pencils with more texture in the paper.

I fully understand your excitement about a new desk! My parents let it slip that they’re getting me an antique secretary desk for my birthday and I could have cried! I’ve wanted one ever since I laid eyes on yours - I’m also thinking of keeping my typewriter on it. Where did you get that cover from for yours? Mine has a hard plastic one, and I’d prefer something fabric for easier access.

I just saw your video dated Jan 6, 2021 where you talk about your Adler J4 typewriter and also mention your Olympia in passing. Together with the green Rheinmetall, that makes at least three. So, apparently you have more than a passing interest in vintage typewriters. Nice to see how you incorporate diverse interests into a cohesive and satisfying philosophy.
I acquired my first vintage typewriter, a 1953 Smith-Corona Silent and I'm looking at two others; one an Adler. I kinda feel that only one thing, no matter how rare or valuable or interesting, does not constitute a collection so I cannot legitimately label myself a collector. That may soon change. At any rate, after thirty years typing on a computer keyboard, my fingers are plenty nimble but not particularly strong. Thanks to the SC and hours of exercise, my pinky fingers are actually starting to develop actual muscles.

Hi there, can you tell me what the backer is called that you put underneath the page that you're writing on so the ink doesn't bleed through?
Oh, that’s my blotting paper. It actually is used to soak up wet ink when I flip the page. The ink doesn’t bleed through on this paper.
Why do you still use a typewriter? Is it the aesthetics or the nostalgia?
Of all the “desks” I’ve ever had, none of them has ever actually been a desk. Right now my desk is a small antique maple table, of the sort you might use in a small kitchen or nook. It was my art table at some point too, and is paint stained and splattered.
Do you enjoy them as they are? Or are you wanting to use them more? What space do you find using the most when you need a writing/art surface?
@@adventuredenali I do use my table desk. My mom gave it to me, and it’s decent and sturdy and spacious. Not sure what happened with the original chairs over the years, there were only two. Right now I’m using a vintage bistro chair. I’d like to get a real, nice, comfy desk chair some day….but to be honest, I do the majority of my writing in bed!
My dad just moved and gave me three pieces of furniture that I haven’t found room for yet, and one is an older drop leaf desk that also is sort of a hutch, with glass front doors. I don’t know how functional it will be, the actual drop down “desk” space is somewhat small, but it’s very nice, has all those little niches for storing stuff. Problem is, I have no room for it right now. I need to let go of the furniture I don’t really love! Most of it came from old beach houses, I had a boyfriend in the home remodeling business, and people were always giving him stuff. But I just have too much. I longingly watch minimalist decor videos….yet last night, at 2am, on my way home from work, I trash picked a really nice little wooden bookshelf unit and a small wood table, look to be from the 1960s. Neither of which I need!!!

Oh for sure! I’ve tried the plastic sports and the appeal isn’t there, too light! But so many fun colors.
Looks like your typewriter desk is much too high. I remember desks for typewriters being lower than other desks because your arms should form a 90 degree angle for typing. Just a tip to avoid pain in your shoulders etc. Maybe you can cut the legs or at least sit higher. 😉 Edit: Ok, I watched more... it has no legs. Bummer.

I am getting some pretty serious 1940's/late 30's vibes from your lovely new desk, but if you ask on Fedora Lounge someone who is more knowledgeable than I am might be able to help you find what to look for to date it properly. There are some people there who restore old furniture and have a great wealth of knowledge. The handles are so beautiful, I can see why you fell in love with it!

did you ever take typing lessons at school....sure hope you know how to use all those 10 fingers to type...such a dream when you can learn where the fingers go ...seriously...typing has been around for many many years...and guess what...still a going with the keyboards on computers.
