Thanks. Winz was my first mod too and I didn't have great soldering skills. In the end i found it too difficult, set it aside and went for the Ebay El cheapo composite mod. Fast forward a couple of years later and having better soldering skills, I'll think I'll pull mine off the shelf and try again. Your vid answered some questions i had. Looking fwd to doing this again
Should you have considered using a cat5 coupler so you could disconnect the motherboard if necessary without having to disassemble the entire thing. motherboard cat 5 to coupler, coupler to cat 5 to composite/svideo interfaces? Then you could just disconnect the cat 5 from the coupler if you ever needed to get into the motherboard. Dunno... That's really the only thing that sticks out to me is that taking it apart now is going to be a pain.
I was wondering if you had a wiring diagram for where the wires go for this mod I bought it awhile back and can't find anything on it and I'm wanting to install it.
Really awesome! The on constructive critique I'd offer is use a step drill bit, I can see the crack's in the plastic from the drill bit. Aside from that, really good. I've had issues with grounding from these little kits, I use shielded cable with the ground in each cable and found line noise goes away.
I am looking at purchasing this mod now. Can you give me your opinion of the quality of this mod and its contents? How has it held up over time? Picture quality good?
@@viper33802 hey thanks for the reply. I've only had it installed a few weeks. Asteroid has weird vertical lines in the objects that would normally fade and frogger has similar vertical lines when the frog is in the same path as a truck. Not sure why. Aside from that it's a great mod.
No it is not. RGB quality is slightly better, but on a system with such limited graphics compared to s-video not realy a big step. But the RGB mod (from Sam Worthington) is much more expensive and not easy to install. This mod here would be quite easy, but the problem is, that the vendor is out of business and I can't find an alternative. The 3rd available mod ist the easy composite-mod, but this one has defenitely the worst picture quality of all three.
That actually looks like a really clean signal too, without any visual disturbance. I always thought that leaving the rf circuit in place caused a less than optimal image, but it doesn't look that way here. What are your impressions of the image quality in person? Does it look as good as it seems on camera?
I reached out to the manufacturer for this mod. According to them the RF will still work, but only in black & white. The color is routed through the mod and not sent along the line anymore. I actually left the RF cable completely out of the system when I did this mod, since I only plan on using the RCA ports.
It was a 6mm Socket I had lying around. Mine just happened to be metric, since I deal with Nintendo consoles. I believe either a 1/4" or 3/8" will work the same.
A dead RIOT chip was the cause of the black screen with this unit. I was able to get flashes of games before it went black. For example, when putting in Combat, it would flash the starting screen for a frame or two, and then go black. That is what led me to think RIOT. Before replacing it, I would check your power first. A lot of Atari 2600 units have bad voltage regulators.
@@LastHeartGames It's a new regulator. I replaced pretty much everything from the Console5 refresh kit before I installed the mod, and it was working just prior. But I will check the voltage
I found the team that made this mod on Discord. They might be able to help you out there. If you replaced everything beforehand and had it working, I would ask them for support. discord.gg/RvMGrgm
@@LastHeartGames I haven't had time to work on it again, but I did notice that they have a new run of the boards on eBay, this time with a blue solder mask I guess I'm a bit too old school, never really really looked into Discord, but I guess now I might. At least till I can work this out
Great... I own a 2600 with wooden case too. I never would change anything at the case. Therefore i use an old CRT TV to play some games from time to time.
I have an old CRT sitting around for playing some games, but I felt my console would get more use if I could hook it up to a more modern TV. But, nothing beats that classic CRT glow.
If you have a heavy Sixer built in Sunnyvale, don't modify anything. It's valuable for collectors. Everything else I would install a mod from Vintage Gaming / Brewery/ CleanComp.

Very nice. Never knew about this specific mod, but I'd definitely do it when I get a 2600.
It was relatively easy to install, but now I can play it on more modern televisions, rather than only on the CRT I have lying around.
@@LastHeartGames That would be my main motivation.
@@LastHeartGames Interesting, since even the newest TV's have an Antenna line in, but have dropped composite and S-Video.

Very neat job, i give you my personal seal of excellence :P
Any before and after screen shots of the game play? Thanks
This is wonderful, no more RF modulator or RFU adapter!

That's a good suggestion. A way to be able to disconnect without complete disassembly is a good idea for next time.
