I have only recently become aware of Sabine, Lea Desandre and Marianne Crebassa. And oh my gosh, what a delightful discovery! I still love Kiri, Joan and Beverly, but these young ladies (Sabine, Lea and Marianne) have now taken me to a whole new universe of musical artistry.
I just got my first set of Apple AirPods and decided to make this the first thing I listened to. It is like hearing for the first time. The perfection of the ensemble, the voice, the aural range. This . . . is . . . joy.
You must have been listening to another performance to all the rest of us! Natalie Dessay's performance might be similar in terms of vocal intensity but Deveilhe's performance, accompanied by the incomparable Raphael Pichon, is quite extraordinary: a masterclass in singing.

Blimey. This is just... perfect. Do spare a moment, if you can possibly tear your attention away from Ms Devieilhe's voice and Mr Handel's writing, to enjoy Mr Pichon's conducting style.
Handel is the master composer of Baroque arias. The way he delays and delays the final resolution of the first section of the aria is so deft. Then the middle section starts lighter and in a major key lifting the mood. I can hear from this performance that Mozart draws on Handel a lot in his own later opera arias. Mozart also reorchestrated Handel's masterpiece 'Messiah'. So he had plenty of opportunity to absorb Handel's style and élégance. 'Mozart said that, “ He is the master of us all. Handel understands effect better than any of us -- when he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt.” So to conclude Mozart thought Handel was a God in music and worshipped him as one of his favorite composers.'
i'm glad a master musician thought that, i am no expert, just a regilar listener with only an ordinary ear but i thought Handel was the greatest. i never tell musicians because they might disagree as i am not one.
I had my first taste of Handel a number of years ago when I heard Kathleen Ferrier singing Father of heaven from Judas Maccabaeus. It was a life changing experience. I then went on to listen to all of his operas. I knew that I had discovered one ( if not the ) of the greatest , most sublime composers to ever live. After Handel one struggles (with the exception of Parsifal) to listen to anything else. There is an unparalleled sincerity and lack of wishing to "titilate the sensibilities" of the listener , which is remarkably refreshing. Handel directly tapped into the divine. Or more precisely , it tapped into him. Like all sublime , divine things , this happens very rarely. "This music crept by me upon the waters ; allaying both their fury and my passion with its sweet air ; thence I have followed it." Shakespeare , The Tempest
I just had forgotten how many times I've seen this video. Everytime I come back, am able to appreciate it more. From her technique, the obvious well-established singer-conductor communication and the hugely talented musicians, this is a very masterpiece on its own. It's sad that these kind of artists are not seen in Mexico, but I hope one day I will travel just to hear them live, which naturally seems to be an out-of-this-world experience.
Ti voglio bene.
Listen to Leontyne Price sing this aria from a 1956 recording. I wish she had done Baroque roles. No one could touch her. Anna Caterina Antonacci comes about as close as could be.

Sometimes there are no words to express in regards to music such as this. I am not articulate enough to state my emotions to this wonderful session so just a big thank you for the orchestra and a love for Sabine especially. What a voice .
Stunningly beautiful! I listened to it over and over. I've heard some great performances of this aria, but I've never heard it so beautifully sung as in this video.
This is astoundingly beautiful! Your voice is just heavenly! You just don’t only sing, you live the song!!!! Your interpretation besides Natalie Dessay’s one are my all time favorite!!
I was just randomly clicking on any opera videos and happened to click on this video. Though I dont know much about this masterpiece and the artist, her voice and the music together with the wonderful orchestra immediately captivated me and made me listen till the end. What a wonderful video from this amazing soprano singing a gorgeous piece from Handel, and having seen her live at Covent Garden I can say that she is truly superb. Let’s hope a major opera house will mount a production of Giulio Cesare with her as Cleopatra.
Lindo! Não é mesmo? Vejam o quanto custa a felicidade. Uma sigela ária do Classicismo é capaz de ressignificar nossa crença na humanidade, ainda que ela pareça verdadeiramente perdida.
An absolutely beautiful voice! I feel she's perfectly matched to this baroque repertoire and would love to hear her in more from this period, especially more Handel and Bach. Angel for sure.
Simply stunning and utterly sublime! Sabine lives the text, one feels - absolute perfection of pitch accuracy throughout and heart-melting expressiveness! Exquisite playing from this excellent orchestra as well! What a gift!

Hardly to imagine how this devine piece of music could ever be performed better.
And all the more because of the banality of the lyrics, which are a hard sell for 8 minutes--but she (more than) pulls it off!
