My wheel doesn't have the hole. This definitely is what I need to do to get front brakes to finally work. This was helpful because it confirms what I need to do.

I just did the rear brakes on my 2004 Recon today. Pulled everything apart and found out most of my problem was the brake pedal was rusted onto its shaft. When I stepped down, the pedal stayed down. Also, the wing nut adjustments were too loose. I pulled the brake assembly apart to inspect everything since I've never looked inside there. There looked to be sufficient brake pads left, so I sprayed everything down with brake cleaner, applied a tiny bit of grease to the moving pivot points, and put it back together. Did a little fine tuning of the wing nut adjusters after a test drive. Parking brake now holds the ATV on a steep hill. Tomorrow, I will check and probably replace the rear end oil. And adjust the front brakes as you described. Thanks for posting.

i have a 1998 and the rear brake is also stuck in place. at first i thought it was just a foot rest...

@@Francois_Dupont Wow! It's probably been stuck like that for quite some time! I recall working the brake up and down on its shaft, while pulling it toward me. It finally came off with much effort. I used emory cloth on the shaft to clean it up. I think I used a small wire brush that fit into the brake lever hole to clean it out. Grease the shaft, and put it back together and it'll work much better, I'm sure. It's been a year and my brakes are still working well.

@@SPCLPONY at least i am surprised to see those ATVs aren't prone to rusting so much like the cars around here (Quebec).
i dont know if you are an expert on these Honda TRX250. i am in the process of completely restoring mine. i have it about 70% disassembled right now. i am wondering about the special locking pin lever thingy, on the left lever, that seems to activate a steel cable into the transmission. parking brake? special locking pin? have you had any experience on the working of this?
my biggest problem, i will have to deal with mine is the previous owner welded the shift pedal lever onto the shift shaft.

@@Francois_Dupont Welded the pedal to the shaft? I wonder if he wanted it to be stationary like a foot peg as you said? Anyway, I'm not an expert, but I've had some repair experience with my ATV's here on the Pennsylvania / New York border. The left brake lever is for the rear brakes, while the right lever controls the front brakes. Even if the foot pedal was welded fast, the left lever would still operate the rear brakes. The small pin and lever on left handle is the parking brake. Push the pin down, pull the big lever back until the small lever clicks and holds the big lever back (engaging the parking brake). Squeeze the big lever until the small one unlocks the brakes. Note the parking brake is only on the rear brake hub assembly, not the front. I'm not sure if the cable runs into the transmission? I'll look at mine and get back to you about that. The 2 wing nuts at the rear hub assembly are the adjusters. One tightens or loosens the rear brake via the left hand lever. It also adjusts the parking brake. The other wing nut is connected to the foot lever. If you've freed that weld, you'll see that wing nut working as you depress the foot pedal.

@@SPCLPONY no no, he welded the shift lever. on the left.

I have a 1998 Honda FourTrax. Why did I loose my front brake completely when I changed out just one front wheel bearing ? I'm going to bleed them this weekend. I tried already but they didn't respond. They were working perfectly before I changed my wheel bearing.
Thank you for any help Bud.

I've got a question. I'm fucking up my mom's Rancher and the front brake lever isn't grabbing anything. Like it's just sort of hanging on there. I'm thinking there's something missing. Could you send me a pic of yours so I know how it's supposed to be?
    Edit: "fixing up" lol
