  • A facelift is a cosmetic surgery that tightens and lifts the skin on the face. People often seek facelifts to combat a loss in skin laxity and elasticity.
Here, Dr. Finical explains some aspects of the procedure.
How does the Facelift procedure work?
During a facelift, a cosmetic surgeon removes excess skin and redrapes the skin. An incision is made around the ears on each side to raise up the skin on the cheek and neck.
The procedure may target most areas of the face, including the neck, jowls, cheeks, brow line, under-eye area, and jawline. It is a permanent procedure lasting as long as 7-10 years, depending on your age and skin condition.
    Preparing for your Facelift:
    - Stop taking blood thinners, including aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin, or goody powder
    - Don't eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery
    During Surgery:
    - A sequential compression device will be placed on your legs. These squeezing devices pump your legs during surgery to keep pressure moving and prevent blood clots
    Post-op Wake-Up:
    - When you wake up from surgery, you will have a giant headdress on. This helps to hold pressure on your cheeks and neck.
    Post-op Day 1:
    - The day after surgery, you will come back to take the headdress off. Also, you will have drains behind your ears, which we will take off as well.
    - We will put you on an elastic chin strap to help hold pressure on your face. You will wear it day and night for the first week
    Post-op Week 1:
    - We will see you back at the end of the first week. If everything looks good, we will trim off some sutures as needed
    Post-op Week 2:
    - You will only wear the elastic chin strap at night
    - At the end of two weeks, you will be able to interface with people you don't necessarily want to know you had something done. In addition, you will be able to put make-up on and start going back to your life
    Post-op Overall Milestones:
    - Week 1: Interface with strangers comfortably
    - Week 2: Interface with people you know
    - 1 Month: Take photos
Often patients ask if they can pair procedures while having a facelift. The short answer is YES. If you have other areas of interest you may want to address, pairing one or more procedures is safe.
Procedures to consider pairing with a Facelift:
    1. Eyelid, brow, or forehead surgery to brighten and rejuvenate the areas of the upper face
    2. Injectables such as Botox or dermal fillers to improve wrinkles and fine lines
    3. Physician-grade topical skin care products to protect your investment and maintain results

Can you get a facelift in your 30s as a way to delay facial sagging? And can you pair it with lifting the temporal area, so the eyes can have a more lifted look?
