  • Into Europe: Europe is readying up for an explosion in the amount of offshore infrastructure in the form of offshore wind turbines, new gas fields, and pipelines.
Yet that infrastructure is vulnerable. Pipelines are susceptible to being blown up and internet cables being cut. So can Europe protect its offshore infrastructure?

That's a very good video! It's rare to see it highlighted just how much water plays a key role on Europe, compared to the relative bulkiness of China or the US which have landmassas which are more blobby.

You're joking, right? China has a couple of choke points through which the bulk of their imported fuel travels and all it takes is the US to cut them off with help from Asian allies then China is a sitting duck who could be attacked until they surrender

It's really important, too. It's a huge part of the reason why Europe's economy came to dominate the rest of the World in the Early Modern Period. Europe has a huge amount of coastline (IIRC, 30% of all the World's coasts - but don't quote me on that). This means they have an abundance of natural harbors, which makes bul shipping a breeze (also Europe has an abundance of navigable rivers serving as internal water ways making transcontinental trade much eaiser). Other continents are not so fortunate; Africa, for instance, has only 2% of the World's coastline, in spite of its great landmass. Africa also has few navigable rivers besides the Nile (and even that is cutoff at 6 places by cataracts).

EU really need to set up a real defensive alliance and insitutions ASAP.
NATO is not enough, is more aligned with USA interest than Europeans ones.
We are entering a more violent world, where developed countries like Europeans ones are envied and contested.
We need to enter this world prepared and armed.
Europe is largely capable to develop a strong navy, air force, space force and army.

NATO's whole purpose is to ensure the security of Europe. So the idea that NATO is more aligned with the US who's primary concern is in the pacific; is comical.

No, what is comical is saying that NATO defends Europe, while one of it's member (Turkey) is illegally occupying 50% an EU country (Cyprus).
It's not because US has more interests in the Pacific that it has none on Europe.
The second front of European defence is the Mediterranean, where things are getting more and more hot by the year.
And yet, NATO is no where to be found, completly disanged, despite Greece, Cyprus and Spain being directly under threat of invasion.
NATO defend Europe where USA wants.
I don't blame USA, it's not in their interests to be against Turkey or be involved in Western Mediterranean conflicts.
But that's exactly why EU must step up take Europe defence in their own hand, as they are the only one legitimate to do so.

I would add that the phrase "rules-based international order" *is* *not* "international order" or "based on international law" (think UN).
Rather, it is a specific US-centric term that's begun making the rounds. Of course the fundamental question is who makes the rules.

@@mrsupremegascon "NATO defends Europe where USA wants."
That's a bit hyperbolic. The US makes up 50% of the NATO Assets. So most of what NATO is, is American forces. I agree the European powers need to do more, in terms of defense. However I doubt it will happen.
"I don't blame USA, it's not in their interests to be against Turkey or be involved in Western Mediterranean conflicts."
Oh Ok. I guess we are just going to ignore the US 6th Fleet. It's only a Super Carrier Task Force and several Aegis Destroyers and Cruisers. No big deal. Every nation in the world can just supply those.

Well, you can essentially park a platform or a ship at a offshore wind farm park since and it will provide all the energy they needs for upkeep. Then you can install sensors running cross the cables and have drones patrol the route filming it. Like you said in the video, the problem with retaliation is providing proof of who's saboteur is. Also, Europe can't just allow for endless streams of sabotages just because they can't catch the actor with the hand in the cookie jar. At some point they will have had enough and do their own covert missions.

just a whole bunch of aerial and naval surveillance capability that protects the European coastline and EEA.
once this stands you can slowly add other capabilities until you have the individual countries can safely disband their own military.

The failure of the Shetlands connectors was assigned to damage caused by a trawler, it has happened before.
There are huge amounts of infrastructure in the North Sea that have been there since the 1980s.
The infrastructure incorporates large amounts of redundancy, there are specific failure modes, including catastrophic loss of the most important assets, which are specified when security of supply is annually assessed for oil, gas and other services provided to the UK.
Responsibility of offshore assets has been the responsibility of the Royal Navy since 1546.
The Coastguard is not responsible for guarding assets in the UK EEZ.
The Royal Navy has recently purchased two ships specifically for the purpose of protecting assets
There are many protective systems deployed in the North Sea and North Atlantic for tracking submarines and undersea drones, including hydrophones and magnetic anomaly detectors, some of which are located on the UK mainland.
Turbines are amongst the most monitored infrastructure in place in the world. Turbine performance is replicated by digital twins which would immediately detect any deviation in predicted and measured behaviour of the turbine structure resulting from the illegal presence of persons. In any event, it is difficult and dangerous to transfer people to offshore assets.
There is absolutely no possibility of the UK providing any access to its EEZ by navies or coastguard of other countries as it will impact the security of the UK's nuclear deterrent. I would imagine that France would adopt the same attitude.

Every EU country has thousands of cases like this, the UK is one of the worst offenders.
The borders aren't open either, with countries putting people in concentration asylum camps, cutting them off from society and not allowing them to work and pay taxes.
Likewise the entire Rwanda plane policy is the most obvious breach of human rights in recent times, waste of money for a plane and policy with the only benefit is the politicians have to look at brown people less.
If the broders was open, we would allow people to go by plane and ferry easily into Europe. Instead we sink their human smuggling boats and let them drown. Its depravity and you probably don't know any immigrants yourself if you can be so racist and think the system isn't broken

    • @mrsupremegascon
      @mrsupremegascon Рік тому +10

It has nothing to do with races, using this word, only makes your point feeling more like a scam than a reasonable opinion..
Most migrants come from culture that are incompatible with European values. While it is usually not a problem when there is a small number of migrants, that are assimilating, like with Muslims in USA for example. It is a huge threat when the number f migrants is large and they are not assimilating. Like it is the case today in Europe.
Europe is at risk to be come like the Balkans or the Middle East. A patchwork of culture that are incompatible with each others, doesn't share the same values. So very unstable and violent.
UN international laws where made in the last century, in a totally different context, using principle from the 19th and 18th century.
At that time, migration was far more local phenomenon, and asylum seekers went to the next peaceful neighboring countries, instead of going directly to richest ones like today.
It is time to update those laws, so they reflect the reality of the 21th century better.
