  • After way, way more convoluted nonsense than any road trip should contain, I've finally completed my trek from Florida to Idaho! My goal with this video was to give a real-world account of driving across the US in a heavily-modified high-mileage Aston Martin V8 Vantage so this video covers a wide variety of topics. Here's a list of timestamps so you can jump around as needed:
    0:00 Intro
    0:40 Background and car info
    5:28 Florida to Virginia, issues with supercharger, tail lights, interior rattle, passenger door
    11:08 Virginia to Tennessee
    11:38 Tennessee to Texas, starter replacement, the beginning of the radiator saga
    15:57 Texas to Idaho, Christmas in quarantine
    17:40 Idaho to Texas, the radiator saga continues
    20:54 Texas to New Mexico, lovely old hotel
    22:27 New Mexico to Utah, automotive acrobatics gone wrong, a very not lovely hotel
    26:22 Utah to Idaho, feeling odd about an anticlimactic conclusion to an epic journey
    28:12 End of trip recap
    28:37 Issues with infotainment system
    30:30 Tow strap wear and tear
    31:28 Suspension and plans for replacement
    34:14 Outro
    Below are links to videos I mentioned throughout this one, but also check out www.Redpants.lol for LOTS more information about everything I discussed!

    I had a long think about my reaction to the last segment of my trip (timestamp 26:22) and I think the root cause of my reaction was that the rest of my trip was so unbelievably wonderful and scenic and majestic and uplifting adjectives also... to have that last portion be so bleak was disappointing. I adore how scenic the entirety of the United States is - not just the bits that I showed but the country as a whole (and Canada - love you guys).
    I try to do something new with each video to force myself to learn more about making these. This time I added timestamps in the description, which adds "chapter" in UA-cam. Hopefully those worked and help people that want to jump directly to a given topic.
    I've gotten feedback from a couple people about text size on phone screens - thanks for that and I'll do my best to sort it going forward.

    Thanks for this video; it was great to watch! I couldn't help but compare the experiences you had on your trip with mine. Eight years ago I took my 18-year old daughter on a road trip in our 1976 Aston. The car had just had an automatic to manual conversion done, as well as a few tweaks to the motor. The trip ended up being very close to 4000 miles, and 90% of that was on remote, secondary roads. We crossed the Rockies several times on that trip, including a very snowy Going to the Sun Road (Montana), as well as the Beartooth Highway (Montana/Wyoming). Spectacular roads, but not ones most people would dare take a rare 37-year old British car. In comparison to the numerous mechanical issues you experienced, our only problem over nearly 4000 miles of somewhat challenging roads was a dead alternator. Luckily we had chosen the right border crossing from Canada into the US, for the US Customs official near Eureka, MT had plenty of spare time to give us a push start! So there is something to be said for older technology... There's less that can go wrong. Keep making these awesome videos!

    Hey man,
    the door locking and light issue is exactly what I had. your windscreen is not sealed, water drips in and get into bcm causing erratic issues.
    100 % aston standard issue. Remove windscreen - will be easy no glue and reseal...
    I used to pull fuses weekly , after a long long drive in storm i felt water on foot. Resealed screen and all issues gone.
    Get a piece of paper and I bet you can slide it through the glass.

    • @Redpantslol
      @Redpantslol  3 роки тому

      My windshield is in dire need of replacement but I've been putting it off due to the cost of it lol. The big accident I had during the track day was on my passenger side, and the repairs weren't entirely complete, so I'm wondering if my door module was damaged in that, or the remnant damage (not being resealed properly) is what's led to it failing.
      One of my really big projects is to redo my windshield, passenger door, and paint, and then wrap the car and add some more carbon fiber to the exterior. But I'm still saving up for that lol.

      I have a few friends with Audis... R8 (V8 and V10), RS4, RS5, RS7... and their experiences have been varied, but consistent on average: May be solid, may be extremely faulty. May be reliable, may require the threat of a lawsuit to fix. I've never owned an Audi myself so I can't comment, and I've had ****KNOCK ON WOOD IN ALL CAPS**** good luck with Astons. On the whole, my Aston has been incredibly reliable and any faults it has had were inconveniences at most.

    Hi Richard
    Great summary of the trip
    I have the Aston Installations kit - you sat in the boot (trunk) of my car when you did the video. After care from James is second to none - I cannot recommend them highly enough. My screen would mess about - turned out to be the screen itself, not the kit. My car has now done 117,000 miles - although the last 6k are on a 4.7, not the original 4.3 - and it also has a new jag radiator. No squeaking or rattles
    Love it.
    But still keen to see suspension upgrades - my dampers will need replacing soon.
    Keep up the good work
    Cheers

      James is one of my favorite people and I consider him a close friend. I feel like I was complaining in the video but I hope people realize how much I love his work, and him as a person, and I've never once been concerned about him or his kit.
      I'll have limited ability to be involved but I'm happy to refer you to others that are fantastic to have the suspension sorted. For coilovers, the BC Racing are great for most people. The custom-build Ohlins kit I'm getting are 2-3x more expensive, but I think they'll be worth it for the money given how hard I drive my car and my expectations of value for money. There are other options, though, and I can give references and recommendations for those if you need it!

    The standard single plate clutch on my 2006 V8 is pretty heavy and I am going to swap it out for a twin plate and lightweight flywheel in the next round of updates. Interesting to note, you may as well swap the original Cat manifolds for a nice tubular set and re=map, as you have to remove one side manifold to do the clutch. Makes sense to do the lot and get another 40BHP... Man maths!

      The original cut was 10 minutes longer but that felt like way too much, even as long as it still ended up being. I didn't mention it in the video but in addition to everything that happened during this trip, I was also selling my house in Florida, dealing with getting my visa to move overseas, and some other random stuff. I have a similar issue with my infotainment system-pulling the main system does indeed reset it. Also, I have to start my car within a couple of seconds of turning the key (not waiting for POWER BEAUTY SOUL) to negate most issues with the kit. James is going to have another look the next time I can get over there.

      Sounds like there might be something else going on? It shouldn't matter if the car sits with the accessories on before the engine is cranked. That might be a sign of another issue with your car's electronics.

      The very small engagement movement and the weight of the stock clutch makes the car sort of clumsy. I don't want to think about reversing uphill. I'd love to see a link on this clutch you discussed. My V8 Vantage has 28K so I'd guess the single plate plus 3 prior owners (!) didn't do it any good.

    • @Redpantslol
      @Redpantslol  3 роки тому +1

      I'd like to but haven't had the time to do it lately. The BC Racing coilovers are something I did a long time ago and those have been doing well. Most of my customers are V8 Vantage owners, which is also what I own myself, so that was my priority. The new setup is something developed by someone else so it hasn't taken any effort on my part. When I do get the time, I'd like to make a DB9 solution, though.

    • @mrfajita1989
      @mrfajita1989 3 роки тому

      @@Redpantslol Totally fair. If you ever need a test subject, my 2010 DB9 is all ears. Weirdly, my car is fitted with the Dynamic brand struts which the internet assured me should have been the Bilsteins. Service records don't show the struts being swapped out either, but who knows. Anyway, the ride is a bit too harsh but so is the cost of the Bilsteins so I am hoping for an aftermarket alternative some day! I'll keep an eye on your channel for sure.

    I've come to refer to a pair of my British cars as " Quirky" because of all the bizarre things that occur with them, for indeterminate reasons, without warning, and many miraculously seem to go away just as fast as they appeared...( my 2016 Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT, and my 2018 McLaren 570S spider...) most notably window, or Infotainment issues. Oddly, my 2018 Jaguar F-Type SVR Convertible has given me flawless service for several years, with the only blemish on her record being an O2 sensor failure in 2020. I say oddly because most people trashtalk Jags for being unreliable...(I'll freely admit my mum's 1986 XJ-S V-12 ( Bought new in '86) had a very crappy A/C unit that required numerous repairs and eventually a full replacement...)
    I wonder why everyone keeps telling me NOT to get a Lotus... ( I kinda want an Emira, as soon as copies start making to North America.)
    The Key, I've found with both of my Quriky Brits, is to keep a "trickle-charger" on them any time you won't be driving them for more than a few days...Battery lows give so many erroe indicators, and seem to be the source of many of the issues. once I started using the trickle-chargers religiously, it has greatly cut down on the bugginess.
    Love the content. Keep up with the great videos, and I really appreciate your candor and transparency about your trials and tribulations with your Astons. Gives us other owners hope for a better driving world.

      @Redpantslol  3 роки тому

      My paint has been in bad shape and the car needs a respray anyway, so I didn't worry about it. But as far as new issues, I don't think I had any. There weren't enough cars on the road most of the time to have much risk of getting sprayed.

  • @cruiseoveride

    Is there a reason you couldn't/didn't want to just take the radiator to a local radiator shop and have them fit a new core or solder it fixed? Seems like that would have saved you a lot of grief until you could get home and research a better replacement. Also would definitely like to see more comfort orientated coil overs for there cars.

    • @Redpantslol
      @Redpantslol  3 роки тому

      It was something we considered, but it wasn't possible due to the way the radiator cracked and the way it's constructed.
      The BC Racing coilovers can be set to very comfortable settings. They were perfectly fine for me, even over rough roads and broken pavement. It was a key thing I refused to budge on when specifying the design and spring rates. My red V8V with BC Racing coilovers was WAY more comfortable than my grey V8V on H&R springs.
