  • In this video, I show everyone how I made a DIY Bread Proofer for under $40. I've seen other DIY boxes that use bulbs which is a fire hazard. This set up is self-regulating. Set and forget. I use it all the time, it works amazing.
    What you'll need:
Heating pad and thermostat regulator: There are numerous sizes and brands, I originally bought a combo with a smaller pad and upgraded to this larger pad. But they have this exact set up I use in the video in a combo, it's under $25 with the coupon right now:
    www.amazon.com...
    53 quart storage container:
I got mine at Lowes for $12.98, link is too long to share but cut and past this: Project Source 13.25-Gallon (53-Quart) Clear Tote with Standard Snap Lid.
Scissors or a knife to cut the notch in the handle.
    And Duct Tape.
Please forgive some of the video issues in one of the cuts, I have garbage, but free, editing software.

I have the exact same heat mat and thermometer, however it got misplaced somewhere in my house when I acquired a “roommate”…my youngest son moved in. Anyway, still searching. I have used this method for over 8 yrs. Works great. Until I find it, I’ll use the slow cooker method.

Great idea because those bread proofer boxes, I’m pretty expensive for just proofing bread , usually I proof mines in my microwave are on top of my stove top and I turned oven on 200 and since everything is sitting on top of the burners in the burners, of course are not on my bread proof faster and it comes out really nice, and I also like your little contraption the possibility I’ll make one. Great video.😀👩🏾‍🦲😀

It is so clutch for big family dinners. I can do two full oven pans, using cups in the corners to stack them. So I have made two dozen burger buns at once before. There is really no way to get them to rise like that without a box since they need to be covered otherwise and that prevents them from rising to their full potential.

my way is "overnight". make dough before i go to sleep, you cant miss it after 12-14 hrs proofing, even in the coldest season.

I like it! I built one out of a seed mat set up. Pretty much the same thing except for the label. I'd like to ask if your's temperature fluctuates up and down like mine does? If I have it set on 80F it will slowly go to about 84F, then after 15-20 minutes will slowly start falling to about 76F, the average being about 80F. Just wondered if that was normal for your's too? Thanks for the video!

Mine never goes above that I’ve ever noticed. The issue is probably with your thermostat.

By putting your proofing container direct on the heating mat does the dough get warmer than your ambient air temp? Did you ever test the dough temp? Would it be better to let the proofing container rest on a elevated rack just hovering above the heating mat? Your thoughts on it? Thanks for the video!

Sorry for the late reply, I rarely check this channel. It isn't an issue, the mat doesn't get more than a few degrees above the set temp. Which makes sense seeing as these are for terrestrial pets. They stay at a constant range of temps in a few degrees around your setting. Otherwise they could harm animals. Plus this is the same way home use proofing boxes work, heat rises, the elements are always on the bottom.
I didn't use the best example of bread to proof here, but I have done two full sized oven pans of burger buns, stacked using dixie cups on the bottom and it works incredibly well.

Can you proof overnight with this set up to help it rise? Or is that too long?

    • @so-onsso-forths9429
      @so-onsso-forths9429  4 місяці тому

Probably too long, the yeast would run out of food and it would collapse. I am no expert though, but if you like to overnight, putting it on a counter is probably fine to slow the process.

I followed your directions to make this proofer, did yours smell plastic-y at first? Did that smell go away? I washed mine and it smells less like plastic but still smells

Can the ambient temperature be brought 100 degrees for yoghurt?

Why does my thermostat keep blinking? How long does it take to heat up?

    • @so-onsso-forths9429

Some of these mats are hard to figure out. I swear the first 20 times I used my thermostat I had to basically relearn how to use it. But generally I just set it and place the dough inside and let it heat up with the dough already inside. It’s not cooking so it doesn’t have to be an exact temperature. The heat just helps the yeast grow better

I have the $220 proofing box from Brod and Taylor and I love it. If you want to make your own be my guest. When it comes to baking and cooking I am willing to spend the money on top grade equipment.

I am tempted to just delete your smug comment, but I'll just ask first. Did you watch the video?
I explained first, this is the same thing you have, just in a cheaper form. Plastic, a cheap heating element and thermostat. I would hardly call that top grade. This isn't how commercial proofers work at all.
Second, I made this during Covid when everyone and their dog, including me, decided to learn how to bake. There really was only that one home proofing box for sale, but obviously impossible to get with the demand at the time. So I deduced how it worked, and replicated it.
So congrats, you spent $220 on $40 worth of stuff, and I'd bet it just sits in a cabinet.
