Nice design. The only modification I could see would be to swap the lightbulb out for a seedling starter mat. More even hearing throughout the chamber less risk than a bulb.
Good design thoughts there. Thanks for sharing by. Stay Gold

I need a proof box big enough to hold the stater and the rising dough at a steady temperature of 105 -110 and this is perfect.Thank you so much!

Why would you be proofing at such a high temp?

what about using an aquarium heater into some cistern inside the box? One gets humidity, heating, and temperature control in one gadget

Perhaps using a warm mat for seed cultivation might be an easier option than the lightbulb? Thanks for the vid!

    • @Objektiv_J

@@beetlejuss I've been using one for a few weeks now plugged into a really cheap thermostat wall-wart all sitting in my oven and it's solid as a rock. It depends more on the thermostat and what its 'green zone' is (how far it lets the temp wander before it wakes up) but the seedling mat is doing a great job.

I've been using a 20 gallon aquarium that I had sitting in my basement with a heating pad underneath it. I have rigid styrofoam insulation under the aquarium and heating pad, and I made a lid out of rigid styrofoam insulation. I put a pan of water above the heating pad, that absorbs and releases heat, as well as provides humidity.

Can you please explain the blue second electrical unit? I followed your Amazon link, and took me to the thermostat controller switch, but I don't see the blue housing you've used to contain it. Could you please share a link for that? And did you use a regular electrical plate on the inside? What was your process for cutting your cooler for this install? Also could you please share a link for the light bulb base? Thanks!

you will need some electrical experience, (or know someone that does) to safely complete this project. if you are uncomfortable with electrical work, please do not attempt. the blue box, is an electrical junction box where the thermal switch connections are housed. www.homedepot.com/p/Carlon-1-Gang-8-cu-in-Blue-PVC-Flanged-Shallow-Old-Work-Electrical-Outlet-Box-B108R-UPC/100404058?MERCH=REC-_-Pip_Alternatives_Non_HDhome-_-202197955-_-100404058-_-N

is also attached to an electrical fixture box to house the it's connections www.homedepot.com/p/Carlon-4-in-20-cu-in-New-Work-Non-Metallic-Ceiling-Fan-Electrical-Box-with-Mounting-Screws-B720R-SHK/100115858

i used a jig saw to cut a the square hole in the lid for the blue electrical box to fit through. it's easier to drill the 4 corners first, so that you dont have to turn the saw while cutting. i also used some average screws and nuts to attach the thermostatic switch to the wall plate.

I think I could use this setup for doing greek yogurt and kefir, using a ceramic heater instead of a light bulb, but I was wondering how temperature is distributed inside the chest.

bajacraig2 has a really good idea in the comment above yours! a computer fan would circulate the air inside to keep the temp constant throughout. i tried to keep the temp sensor for the thermostatically controlled outlet close to the center of the cooler.

    • @greythunder3
      @greythunder3  3 роки тому

With the thermal cut switch on the top where it needs to be for accuracy, you will end up with wire in some capacity going between the top and sides.

I imagine one could further reduce the cost by using Arduino with some sensors, instead of a pre-made temp controller. That one ate a half of your budget, it seems! I was also looking at some EEP temperature boxes, they seem like a good candidate for the box itself. Not sure about the bulb as heating element, as it generates the heat unevenly. For starter this probably won't be an issue, but for dough proofing or pre-dough fermentation it might. Do you mind sharing some links to those $200 devices you mention? I am curious what is on the market. Thanks for posting this!

I agree, but most people don't know how to do that. I'm going to start a proof box build soon with Arduino. Do you think I'll need any sort of PID control for this. It seems to me if I install a fan I could do on off control and just set the ranges to not be as close to the margins of what is good for proofing. Thoughts?

Well Becky, I was told to speak when spoken to and not to interrupt a conversation.
I was also taught to voice my opinion if I thought it was needed. I was clearly pointing out to the guy who posted the video that he should have concentrated on the item he was making instead of his private life.
Just as I did in my post.
If you post a video on UA-cam you must accept criticism be it good or bad. The guy who posted the video may read my comments and improve his next post.
He may on the other hand take umbrage and think like you do that I am a cad and a bounder.
So I do not feel shameful at all, also 2 other people are in agreement with my comments.
But you felt it necessary to have a verbal attack on me, which is fine by me. It means you read my comments and you disagree with them.
Have a nice day Becky, Stuart x

@@stuartwilson3286 Well, it would have been nice if you had also commented on the bottom line, which was the proofing box construction and engineering , rather than just on the presentation. Perhaps a lesson you missed is that there are proper and constructive ways to voice your personal opinion, assuming that your opinion actually has value to others. It might not. As for me - I like the project and some of the comments have added to the value.

Stuart Wilson your interruption of a civil conversation added nothing to the interactions and indicated to all your lack of civility. No one cares for your useless and uncivil opinion. Keep useless opinions to your self, the only one who appreciates hearing from you is you. No one spoke to you and no ones life was enhanced by your interjection. Thank you Grey Thunder for your helpful offering.
