The thing is, it probably is a practical suit while filming, but I’m like 90% sure that they cgi’d over most of it in post. That’s what most shows and movies do. The practical armor will mainly just serve as reference. Most no cgi shots are actually just well done cgi

My experience playing the Fallout games is that you rarely stumble upon high level enemies without knowing that you're somewhere you probably shouldn't be. You may encounter things you can't handle yet but the world and stories gives it a context to where you almost never feel like you're backtracking. Especially in the early games you often felt out of your depth by default, so it was more about finding the few things that were even possible at a given point in your story, rather than stumbling upon a few things you couldn't do. In my experience at least.

Regarding exploration. The area around the vault is low level and the farther away you go the higher the levels get. So as long as you push outward at a moderate pace exploration is pretty organic. That said, you can frequently turn fights to your advantage if you are tactical. Pick up mines for example and save them for a rainy day. Run and find cover while kiting or separating enemies. Just use stealth to avoid enemies you can't fight. Etc.
For me, the pleasure of Bethesda games is the world more than the game. The main quest is decent, but I only played it once even though I've played hundreds of hours of FO4. My favorite mods are one that lets you do alternate starting points to bypass the main quest entirely, and one that gives granular control of difficulty. For me the sweet spot is a toned down survival mode that's more immersive than the default gameplay but not as punishing and tedious as full survival.

Some open world games sync game world level to yours; it keeps you moving with a certain flow. And sometimes, the game gatekeeps certain areas or locations that might be hiding something that is meant for you not to experience early on the game, or for some benefit or reward that you are not able to wield (or not supposed to) yet. An example would be - if the game area is tied to a story progression that comes in a certain order of completion, so you can't beat the guys there because they are guarding a checkpoint to forward story progression. But later on, the game's story will lead you back there afterwards as you progress your game play (and progressing game play gets you leveled up to the point that you are able to engage enemies in that area.)

    • @CinePals

I get that. Makes sense. Often times in Odyssey it’s repetitive stuff, but just soldiers with higher XP. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @Agyapas97
      @Agyapas97 7 місяців тому

@@CinePals yeah - oftentimes they solve that by making the enemies you fight against that are on your level or lower yield so little to no XP that it incentivizes you to just try out the ones that can kill you in one hit 😅, buuut rewarding you with a ton of xp and loot.
Some games fix this by giving you game settings to raise the whole world level to a higher tier of difficulty for everything, but the devs eventually realize that you can only achieve higher tiers by making the enemies "bullet" sponges that makes the gameplay too tedious in the end.

I get the aim of your question about high powered encounters at low levels.. I like it. My first playthrough of fallout 4, I spent 600 hours in game just exploring and experiencing the world building they'd put into it. Cleared locations, etc; but, 600 hours before starting the main story line. Not being able to get into specific areas early, doesn't bother me. This is a world I'm going to be in for a while and it's all part of the experience IMO. IRL there are places you can't go without clearance, access, etc. And in a world like Fallout, you expect there are going to be things far more powerful that you're going to have to work to overcome. With this particular game, the lead lived in the area and knew it before the bombs fell. So, exploring before starting gave me an understanding of locations the main character would have at least minimally had. So it felt like putting on the character just by letting myself in on some of what he already knew in world. Didn't explore the whole map. Just enough to understand roughly what the world was. Then I picked up the storyline and let the story lead me to the rest. Perfect experience.

As to your frustrations with high difficulty scaring you off from exploration in games like Fallout and Odyssey. That is in a sense the risk with sandbox type games, but is also an issue with difficulty being scaled solely to more health. In fallout 4, they remedied it somewhat with it being rather rare for a headshot to not noticeable affect even a tough enemy, however, more likely what you encounter is the enemies rapidly mowing you down instead, or the terror of seeing a supermutant couching a mininuke under their arm as they charge full speed towards you in a suicide rush. In general the game is more about gearing yourself up, being vigilant about where you are going and avoiding overly hostile areas as you navigate the game, and it isn't so bad.

I mean, in Fallout, everything wants to kill you, so yes, you can get in over your head and get yourself killed, a lot. But, there's usually a way to overcome whatever is in front of you if you're smart about it and in most cases, if you take advantage of stealth, you can avoid fights you're not ready for and still explore those areas. Basically, don't fuck with a Deathclaw until you're ready.

I agree with you on AC Odyssey. The grind was horrendous. After the 20 hr mark, I had to grind for another 20-25 hrs to even progress in the story. I don't mind grinding (a perfect example of good grinding is borderlands franchise), but in odyssey it was just too much. But atleast they made the game worth the grind in the later stages. I would encourage you to finish the story, it is a wholesome game. I would also recommend getting the DLC "fate of atlantis", it is an excellent experience.

I don't mind different zones of an open-world "fantasy" game being different levels, because it gives me something to work towards. Or, it offers a challenge to test my skills and see how far I can get. I'm excited to come back to it a little later once I'm stronger and have better gear. But I can see how it can break the immersion. Imagine if Red Dead Redemption 2 had different areas/cities you couldn't go to because the animals and random gangs are suddenly way too hard to fight. It wouldn't make any sense for that type of game, but it does work better for games less grounded in reality.

I'm hopeful, but a little skeptical at the same time. Have to see how they explain the Brotherhood's (prominent) presence. I mean, by the events of NV they're a shell of their former selves hiding out in a bunker in a secluded area too scared to venture out of the bunker except at night. Obviously an airship like that should be able to travel across the country, so maybe Maxson's group had another ship we didn't see in FO4 (or built?) and they went west. I just hope they didn't shoehorn a significant Brotherhood presence into the story "just because". But I'm a huge fan of Walton Goggins, so I'm hopeful this is good. Also hope there's some tunes from NV in there cause someone has to have spurs that jingle jangle jingle.

I went exploring in Origins too and got ripped apart by, like, level 10 or something wolves! I think it really depends on who they have actually making the show. Jonah Nolan is top tier talent. There was a story I've seen that he mandated writers on the first season of Westworld play a certain amount of GTAV before they were allowed to actually write anything. Reason being so that they can understand what people would do when given the type of power that you have in a game like that, and the irreverence for the life of NPCs that people have (like people will just drive full speed down a sidewalk and mow people down). And I think that experience is definitely reflected in what you see on screen (in the first season at least, he was only really involved in the first).

Game difficulty in Bethesda games is a bit off for the normal modes IMO. Usually higher difficulty means more damage taken (by you) and way way more hit points for the bad guys. Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 both have a "survival" difficulty which includes hunger, thirst and more management of broken bones and diseases. That part can be a bit tedious. What is great about it though, is that weapons do WAY more damage, both to you AND to the bad guys. If you play carefully, it's entirely possible for you to clear out a high-level enemy camp with sneak attacks, sniping and stealth. It's my preferred difficulty for these games, as I think the scaling works much better this way.

  • @chrisd7047

I find excessive xp grinding frustrating, but I don't mind it in reasonable amounts, especially if it makes sense for the story. In the way back days of Diablo 2, getting out of the newbie zone was quite literally blocked by someone who would not let you past them until you hit level 4. There is a degree of protecting players from themselves involved in it. Devs, like tabletop game masters, design certain elements into character progress and encounters, particularly for the big story beats. They're supposed to feel like you accomplished something when you win, which requires a certain amount of build up. I get where you're coming from with the "I just shot a human in the head, he should fall over" viewpoint. It would make sense in the real world.
But I live in the real world. I don't want it invading my escapism to that degree.

The giant ship and the dudes in the big armor suits are the Brotherhood of Steel. They're not evil, just himbos.
The bear is a Yaoi Guai, and yeah they're mutant bears, super strong.
The finger f*cker, as I'm calling it, the axolotl, is a new creature, and likely based on the FEV experiments. New thing.
Idk about the grindy nature of other games. I play Fallout 76, and I don't really grind too much, I most go on pilgrimages. (Freely wandering and exploring) In 76, areas are color coded to signify difficulty of said areas. Forest is Green, Ash Heap is Black, Toxic Valley is white, Savage Divide is tan, Mire is blue, and Cranberry Bog is red.
The thing about Fallout is you have the freedom to choose a build that's right for you. Sure, there's meta builds, every game has them, but nothing's stopping you from just choosing a favorite weapon and playstyle and sticking to the that. The game only gets punishing if you try to Jack of All Trades things. I'll tell you, I STRUGGLED, just as you did, when I was pressured into going Heavy Gunner, and it didn't fit me at all. I gave Commando a try, and now my biggest weakness is just me being an idiot instead of the game itself. I actually have the highest DPS weapon in 76 too!

On your point with the feeling of discouragement of exploitation in games personally I feel it’s actually encouraging exploitation. The reason being is if you steam through point A to point Z you miss every other point along the way. If it gives you the choice to hammer on A-Z you can but it’s going to be rough. Whereas you can go all over the map dodging stuff or marking stuff for later and finding something totally unexpected as a consequence of that. For instance when fallout 3 came out I had a period of time I was able to focus on the game and I put over 1000 hours in to it and hadn’t even seen everything but I had friends who put 100 or so hours in to it completed it and had just as much fun. I even went back to it and played a different style going to different places out of normal order and it felt almost a different game. Personally I’m not as in to assassins creed that feels to much like it has a path for me the 3 franchises I enjoyed the most are fallout RDR and GTA all have more hours in them than I should say and I can go back to all at any point and still not feel board 👍🏻.

As far as killing NPCs of greatly differing levels I think it should be possible to kill them but very difficult. Yeah, headshots and things like that should be very hurtful unless they have good armor but I also imagine it's like you just getting out of soldier school and coming up to John Wick and being upset that he killed you so easily. I think in some games you're simply playing another character that grows throughout the story, not you and your expert gaming ability. Some things SHOULD be nearly impossible when you first start out. I do wish they had better ways of showing that instead of them just being bullet shields with 8000 HP. Should still be able to get in lucky shots.
And just to say something about the whole Fallout thing, I think it looks awesome. I haven't been some sort of Fallout super fan or anything. I played 3 and 4 but I'm mainly in it for Vault Boy. Love that lil' guy. Super excited to see the show though. Unless the story or acting is absolutely horrible I can't really see how this can fail. Even to those unfamiliar with the games it at least seems like a really interesting concept for a show.
