Solo @ 2:42 | Cadenza @ 8:01 The 2011 Jazz Band of America performs Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia", featuring a trumpet battle by Allen Vizzutti and Josh Shpak at 2:42, and then a very cool cadenza at the end of the piece at 8:01

2:41 not even a change in his face. That's incredible
The lead player is Enrique Sanchez...he is now two years older than when this video was shot and an incredible player...he is on a full scholarship at Julliard and he goes back home to Florida on school breaks. If you'd like, you could reach him via Facebook.
2:41 I think the only person I've ever heard play that high was Arturo Sandoval. And this guy didn't even have a change in expression. Unbelievable.
Watch the original night in Tunisia performance with Arturo. There's an insane Barisax player there
de olofpass
I've seen it. It's amazing!
very impressed with the student trumpet solo. he played off of vizzutti really well. a lot of the lines he played were seamless continuations of what vizzutti played right before. very well done.
Listening to those trumpets play that high makes my lips hurt. Defiantly don’t miss that feeling lol
That's what happens to my teeth when I hear a tenor sax.
Lol i miss that feeling
i love the dude with the glasses just smiling his face off the whole time
AND HIS NAME IS...... JOSH SHPAK

I was asked to play electric bass on this chart (I'm the bassist in the video). Out of the 10 charts we played that night, it was about half string bass and half electric bass if I remember correctly. Plus, the string bass I was playing was a rental that was set up very poorly, so I wouldn't have been able to play the classic intro line on it.
Actual song starts at 1:36
Cheers bro
Josh has an incredible ear.
Loved the sax solo so much.
Have to come back to this video every year
Same man
I miss being in band 😕🎷
Depending upon how much you "miss" it, check out your local community college. They usually have ensemble classes for non-music majors you can join for jazz, classical, etc. Have to get your axe out, sharpen up your chops in case they require auditions then go for it. It's what I did.
Lol, he plays that start of the solo like, "No big deal". Amazing.
That man steals the preformance
5:50 the lickkk
Still better than today's radio music station you hear now a days.
dang! Those high notes on the trumpet!!!
I'm from Tunisia 🤗
Ptr Bie Then I wish you a very good night.
lead trumpet is amazing
This has become my favorite video on UA-cam
The bass is great
Allen Vizzutti came to my school for a masterclaas, it was awesome
Thank you...it was quite an honor to perform with Allen!!
no question Allen is an amazing player...his tone is perfection, and when u strolled up there and started playing it was just crazy good. the smack and smoke was off the hook...dirty dirty dirty good job Josh
The amount of years he must have been playing to hit that high note before the solo so easily
THOSE HIGH NOTES!!
That mouthpiece on that boy's trumpet is huge......!
What an honor. I've always wanted to meet vizutti
1:56 that quote from Dizzy's Manteca
love watching great high school jazz players do there thing. congrats!
Thank you...I hope I can perform with again!!
Video starts at 1:32
ok im in love with this song man
what a band!
The bass in the beginning
@TrumpetLover15
I had the honor of playing with him and being a part of his clinic this past Saturday. He played Carnival of Venice and came back for an encore. The 2nd time he played it with his trumpet turned upside down. It was amazing to say the least.
Jazz Band of America you have a Real Latin beat, having a party with your Orchestra must be Amazing
I think is my favorite arrangement of the tune

Yep, great song and good players.
I like watch the alto sax player with the glass' reactions.
Amazing
the incredibles anyone?
This was in the incredibles 🤔
Perhaps I missed it
Yup
rip harambe I think it’s the certain type of jazz, just saxophone heavy stuff in general
Very Nice Job Josh... Ive always dreamed to meet Vizzutti... Hes friend with my band teachers down here in Hawaii. Very good job. your very fortunet. Oh and good Job with the sponsoring for CarolBrass instruments. I own one myself Great pease of work.
Cool!
this was uploaded on my birthday :)
Hell yeah. 1000th like right here
4:53 - when I was watching it I was like WOW did he (Josh) just do that?!
Love the Montana shout out
🎤🎷🥁🎺🎸🎹= J A Z Z
🎻(upright bass)
@@susanarojo3906 you’re being pretentious
@averythepokemonking Thanks so much!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS
5:49 licc
I love the older dude's expression @ 9:38! :D
man, that was amazing.
Well, the shallower cup helps make the upper register easier. The "V"-shaped cup makes the air stay more focused as it goes into the trumpet, creating a brassier, brighter sound, rather than a more-rounded classical sound. The wider rim is mainly just more comfortable to certain people depending on the shape and thickness of their lips.
I love the look on Allen's face at 9:37
wow........ I mean... WOWWW!
awesome performance dude your solo was pretty filthy. I enjoyed that concert the most.
I like the alto sax because I play that
Jessica Sammons ur gay
You're probably 13.
this is awesome! any more?
@barkwood Wow...thanks so much! I just wish the mic they gave me was as good as the mic they gave Allen!
That mouthpiece is a Yamaha Miyashiro 1S (assuming you're not considering Allen Vizzutti to be "the student")!!
woooooow!!!!!!!
Sweet
This is sick as hell.
woow
Jesus, I wish I grew up in california... their tone is on par with college grads. So impressive
killin
Kool
I really like the lick that Josh played at 9:02
I see Jake Abernathie in the group playing Bari Sax!
sweetlistening yaaa bari sax!
saxaphones rule!
these guys vs UNT 1 o'clock jazz band I think it'd be really close..... nevermind scratch that I was wrong .-.
the one oclock band would shred these guys
@skaterman1112foru It was absolutely awesome, to say the least!!
nice!
Wow that guy in the red suit hit those high notes like it was nothing
oooooooohh.... ooooooooooooohhhhhh.....
Check it out!
The Yamaha Miyashiro 1S played by Josh Shpak is much shallower than a Bach 3C, and the rim quite a bit wider. And the Miyashiro is more of a "V"-shaped cup instead of the Bach's "C"-shaped cup.
@bigeyezzzzzzz were you guys improvising cause it sure sounded like it
Guys!!!
From 8:07 onwards (after the musical break), can anyone tell me if that trumpet soli is written or pure improv?
Thanks!
Jeremy Lin Hi there... as planned out as that might have seemed, it was completely improvised on the spot by Allen and Josh.
bigeyezzzzzzz when u wish you had that talent :(
i had goose pimples all the time..
what was it like playing with allen vizzuti?
Wheres noah moss??
3:40 Will Bridges is practicing his solo in the back?
what type of trumpet is that
Brandon Martinez Whose trumpet are you referring to?
the lead (the guy with the burgundy blazer)
Brandon Martinez That fellow is Allen Vizzutti. He is a Yamaha artist, and I'm not sure what horn he was playing at that time.
the riff at 9:17 is neat
