Once I managed to get 611 max health with early Life Affirmation and Double Up. Then I got Water Fitness and Plentiful Forage too, eventually. It does feel like you need to go to ridiculous lengths for a decent amount of max health in this game.
I really like the big bonk hammer upgrade. One weird thing you can do with it is dash during the middle of your attack. So what I usually did is start using it from afar, then dash before it'd land, to make yourself less vulnerable while "channeling" your attack.
reminds me of Hades I sword with the way you could dash in the middle of the special animation.
I did actually do a Mel aspect aphro attack build just today and it is shockingly strong, like 18 minutes with no duos/legendaries/particularly good hammers (the double bonk hammer was on, the one where final hit consumes 20 magick, but that's just aight) and if a weapon does well even with pretty basic boons you can tell it's actually strong.
And I think this is one of the cool things about hades 2, that aspects of Mel, on the whole, are just good without caveats unlike aspects of zag which were pretty eh almost without exception (bow).

Hey, I have just had an idea for a challenge that also relies on maxing your HP. Basically, the goal is to tank Chronos' first insta-kill move with only your HP, and then proceed to beat him. No cheese. Only damage reduction (but no Coarse Grit) and HP increases allowed. It is as much about maxing you health as it is about preserving it to the end.
I'd love to see a speedrunner level talented player attempt this, so I thought I'd mention it here.
Details below (copied from a Steam discussion thread I made)
Challenge idea: really show Chronos who is the boss
I just had that idea for a silly challenge: you know how Chronos phase 2 always starts with his insta-kill move, as to assert dominance? What if we just get there and stand right in front of him like a boss and take it. No armor, no shield, no Coarse Grit, no miss, no "resisted", no death defiance, no impervious, no dodge. Just pure "come at me, bro".
So, it is more or less just a "max HP" run. But also preserving that health until Chronos phase 2, and then, of course, win. But I was wondering if we can make it with:
To reduce the damage to ~750:
- Knuckle Bones keepsake
- Hephaestus' Fixed gain
To increase your HP:
- Aphrodite's Life affirmation
- Poseidon's Double Up
- Demeter's Plentiful Forage
- Hephaestus Uncanny Fortitude
- Arcana cards that increase your max HP
- Whatever else I have probably not thought about
I have not done the math nor tried if Knuckle Bones does reduce the damage (though I do not see why it would not), but that should be doable, no?
The pain. All three times I tried to run this build I didn't get Life Affirmation first biome either.
The number also is lower than the gold hoarder duo. I've never reached 1000 life so I assume it's hard to push 1500 which is 150%, while the same bonus threshold for gold build, 3000 gold, can be easily reached (I've done 6400 once,) don't know though if both bonuses use the same calculation. But it's not fun to hoard gold without spending them.
It's probably coz hoarding gold actively harms your run but getting more health actively makes your run more safe, so you cannot balance them to give the same bonuses to damage
When you upgrade burnt offering using the keepsake from hestia, it changes the boon you’ll trade. Do you guys think that should be the case or should it not change the boon?

Coarse grit from demeter is funny when fighting Chronos specifically

My favorite run so far for me has been a White Antler Mel Axe glass cannon build. Aphrodite or Apollo attack depending on whether I want max damage or range, marauders slash and Hermes attack for swing speed, so much more. Most important though is to get rid of any arcana that boosts max health so you have a constant white antler 40% crit. Heph armor or Demeter shield are awesome too
20:40 It’s not just an axe, it’s a Labrys which is usually associated with pagan goddesses (and to a lesser extent, lesbianism).
I actually think early Plentiful Forage might be great for a run like this. I got a run going where it got accidentally hit with rare crop and I ended up with 460 max health without really trying (in case you didn't know, it triggers twice when favor of gaia goes off). I didn't even see Aphrodite once.
That duo boon has potential, but is definitely not as strong as any of the others. Either they make it to where every 50 hp is a 10% damage increase, or just make it 20% instead of 10. Either way, the duo boon is definitely not rad.
That second room ending at 2:03 - does anyone else hate the wack feeling of the axe hitboxes? It can be SO stingy, and the particle effect hitting them but not the hitbox feels awful
Would it be possible for Heph to outperform Pos with his 'gain health based on amount of magic' boon to get the ultimate max health??
Mad Max Fury Road was in no way a flop. It was considered an incredible action film and still maintains a 97% rating on rotten tomatoes. It's a fantastic movie.
You may already know, but a trick for your toolkit with the axe is quickly triggering the block between normal attacks. It lets you repeatedly deliver the first attack in your combo so you can hit a bit faster. Good if you just want to keep enemies staggered with less of an opportunity for them to hit you.
*Hell Splitter* has no combos. 😳
@@lookalike4805 Yeah you're right. I hadn't watched much of the video when I commented. So not very helpful for this build. Wouldn't make a build around it, but can be a useful little trick with the axe in general.
@@davec9435 neat trick, but each swing of the axe does more damage so this is pretty useless when the clock is on

Like I said, I wouldn't make a build around it or use it as an 'at all times' strategy, but I've found it useful on occasion
I tried out this build but I think I managed to actually get luckier. I got a hammer first room that gave me Big Chop with my second hammer in The Mourning Fields giving me Executioner's Chop which is a really weird interaction and also almost ruined me because I had absolutely no mana regen and the way that works means you just can't attack. Had to use the mana regen trinket to fix that for Tartarus. I went for Poseidon as my third god to get Water Fitness, got the extra water affinity from a bought Chaos Gate, didn't get Flood Control sadly but didn't need it. Only lost one DD against Chronos due to getting too eager on my literal last attack. It's definitely not bad but I would not try it on higher Fear.
Literally did the exact same run this morning. Got only half your health though but man is it strong.
This feels like a prototype of the AFK build, just add Hera's Vengeance boon?
This boom could be multiplicative. As it is, the juice is not worth the squeeze.
30:52 shouldn’t your chop hammer block the omega attack hammers from showing up if you can’t use it?
You can still use the omega attack with chop hammer

Gift all the offering NPCs.
If you have book of shadows unlocked you need to go to the individual god's listing and hit Y for their boon list
Can you not instant click choices (like Arachne outfit here), or at least verbalize what you take? Sometimes it’s so fast I can’t read what’s selected.
I try my best to balance a decent pace in each video while verbalizing the important choices. I'll keep your feedback in mind in the future.

Pretty sure I've made the kids at my work cringe by using the word "dope" (though they also cringe at using the word cringe now lol).
I really have not found a single build w Hestia or Hephaestus that I enjoy so far, and it is really disappointing. Absolutely crushed when I end up needing to take either of them
Hestia's cast is one of the best Origination enablers in the game, and her duo with Hera for Omega builds is very strong, as is her Poseidon duo for general purposes.
yeah, pretty much never ever want hephaestus special or attack(or his cast) so i tend to avoid him even if his defensive talents are nice, 200 damage on 12 second cool down or 400 damage on a 20 cooldown is nice burst if you arent planning on pressing one of the buttons often anyway but absolute garbage otherwise. Vent, his secondary curse is also good damage, but i feel like my target would already be dead if invested in anything else
@@muphrid7799I used to think that, but I’ve gravitated away from even that Cast to just going Demeter most of the time for Origination purposes. Multiple potential curses, and while most of Demeter’s Duos are lackluster, they’re at least better than leaning into Scorch.
@@muphrid7799also I severely dislike the Pos/tia duo as it removes Slip, which means it can both deactivate your Origination and the Slip damage. It feels so counterintuitive. The trade-off for the Steam damage does not feel at all worth it to me.
that's fair, i think they're probably the gods with the least utility out of all of them
me personally though im a big fan of hestia builds that go all in on scorch + the boon that removes scorch effects once it reaches 300, which really helps keep hestia builds from turning into waiting games
as for hephaestus i have literally no advice bc i keep avoiding him whenever im playing! oops

I find myself repeating this line Zagreus says because it's unexpectedly lyrical and lots of other lines he and Mel say have a similar ring to them further enhanced by the delivery.
