The Sonata unfolds in approximately 30 minutes of unbroken music. While its distinct movements are rolled into one, the entire work is encompassed within an overarching sonata form. Liszt effectively composed a sonata within a sonata, which is part of the work's uniqueness, and he was quite economical with his thematic material. The first page contains three motive ideas that provide the basis for nearly all that follows, with the ideas being transformed throughout.
A wide range of divergent theories exists as to what the Sonata is about. It is a musical portrait of the Faust legend; it is autobiographical; it is about the devine and the diabolical; it is an allegory set in the Garden of Eden or it is a piece of "expressive form" with no meaning beyond itself. Personally, I feel they are not mutually exclusive but rather highlighting different aspects of his masterpiece.
After doing an explorative research to sources and performance - by writing my master thesis about the Sonata - I decided to play D natural in m.738 and D sharp in m.740 in accordance to Klindworth's version (Liszt's pupil), following the musical and programmatic analogy of Goethe's Faust. First she is "judged" by Mephistopheles, then a voice from above says "she's saved". Redemption triumphs over condamnation.
