the japanese lyric at "he doesn't get it get it, that if i'm rescued then i'll lose what makes me special" was actually "if i leave, the story meant/made for me will be lost"- which leads me to believe this princess is faking her whole life in order to maintain her legend. The destruction of her kingdom may be a hint that she is not actually be the princess but someone who took over and feigned the role- or if she did destroy it, it was in order for her to create a story like this to the outside world. You're right! Not only is it hinted at in the Lyrics but in the image as well! Her mask has dragon horns on it, her dress ends in a curling spiky tail, her hand holding object (the uhh...Helmet? Stone heart? Whatever that is) are clawed. The red flowers as well since in many different media red flowers, butterflies, red eyes, etc, are a symbol of an underlaying horror and untrustworthy force or being. And of course the obvious blood stains and how her body is postured are also pretty incriminating evidence that she ain't a kind face.
I appreciate the deep lore on the captive princess psyche but I seriously think the princess should find a new hobby. Maybe she'll stop doing this at 100.
And then she finds the fulfilling joy of knitting sweaters for her monster pals and herself! ( dragons are still lizards after all she needs to stay warm!)
I like how she keeps counting the fallen heros, that implies that she either finds joy in in breaking this record over and over again, or that there's some part of her that feels remorse abot taking so many lives...
I love stories where the protagonist isn't reliable so you don't know what is and isn't true, never thought a song could make something like that, amazing job
This is a pretty fun song. I love how the different colors of the subtitles convey different ideas--the red being the fearless knight, the light blue being the princess's spoken words, and the white and light purple being the two different types of internal monologue given to us by the princess. The song's ending is ultimately a cynical subversive take on the captive princess, which has been pretty popular of late, though usually in the idea that the princess can save herself. The fact that she is ultimately a kind of villain is intriguing, and is reliant on what she believes makes her special, which I think hinges on the very concept of the princess in the tower. In most stories that involve a princess to be rescued, the hero or the main character chooses to save them because they're, well, the princess, and they've been kidnapped by some evil forces. We're given an idea about who and what kind of individual they are just through that, and because we assume that the people that kidnapped her are the bad guys, then it gives us a goal and reward: to defeat the baddies and ultimately rescue the princess. But that's just it. We assume her characteristics even though we've never met her, and its this very idea that the princess is this flowery, charming, fanciful, and beautiful person that we're given greater motivation to save someone who we only conjure up in our head. This princess on the other hand is inherently monstrous, and she's the heir to a land of ruin, she has nothing except this tower full of traps and monsters that she gathered up; she's lonely because there's no one left, she has nothing left except for the tower, and the only way that she can convince others to come fill that loneliness is by spreading rumors of a captive princess in a distant tower, and she can only manage that by singing to the knights for help, and using the mask to hide her very essence. That's what makes her special. She's more of an idea than anything tangible, and she leads the knights to ruin because she's lonely, and that's all she has left to give. If she's ever saved, then the charade is over, she loses what makes her special and what is left beyond her monstrous nature? She's stuck in this eternal paradigm of wanting to be saved, of wanting to be with others, but being unable to be saved due to her very nature, which is why both of her internal monologues, though disparate, are valuable to her character.
I agree, it's really powerful stuff! I think the most powerful part of the whole thing for me was the way she kept repeating the number of heroes that have died in their conquest to herself. It almost strikes me as though she's gotten so desensitized by the whole charade, that the only thing that keeps her even faintly entertained is counting the number of heroes she's lead to their doom, thus making her all the more unsettling as a character. I would love to see this be adapted into a full-fledged game, something like a Mario look-alike to lull people into a false sense of security by presenting them with something familiar at first.
Shawn's Legacy He didn’t do that in Undertale because the game implies Frisk goes back in time after the end credits to save Asriel and reunite him with his family. No one got left behind in that game, they game just leaves us off before it’s over while implying more to be more poignant.
everyone going crazy about toby fox and itoki hana but im just here as someone who followed bani-chan forever and wow!! so excited for her that her art was used for something like this, super cool.
I feel like Toby Fox chose the instruments with care to make it seem like it is played inside the story. The drums seem to be the hero rushing, the bells are the armor ringing that is told to sound like a bell(2:02), the voice is her singing and the door is the door(2:50) ! Also at "tears falling" it echoes like if there was a word painting of some sort ?! The tears make the sound I guess ? It wouldn't surprise me that it is on purpose since he did this in nearly all of his works, if not all.
people out here surprised toby is singing, while im here like, "yeah he also sung the baby is you but no one talks about that anymore" nvm baby is you is now in pokemon, we did it
Man I love how the English lyrics, while are not a direct translation, rhyme and fit into the rhythm of the song perfectly. And even "seventy three" is a perfect syllable match for Japanese "nanajuu san", though it's probably a coincidence
Excellent song, great singing, and Toby did great with his singing too. I also especially love how the lyrics weren't only translated into English but made to rhyme as well. The only issue is in the video, where "I touch my tear-stained window" is missing on the left (2:40). I had to check the description to be sure the notes weren't overly extended over "And whisper thank you my dearest (FRIEND...!??!)".
dude I haven’t heard Toby singing since The Baby is You. Actually probably for good reason, all things considered. I wouldn’t want to do any vocal songs after making that... because no performance could possibly top it! All jokes aside, this is really good. Like, straight up fantastic.

Wow. Just wow. The ability to tell a story and give insight into a unique character solely through song is a unique and rare skill. Your work is incredible. Keep it up!
There are lots of songs that convey stories and ideas, but some encrypt them in and require the listener to decrypt them. "Eve" is a strong example here.
Wow, that's a hell of twist to reveal in a song. It's interesting how the previous lyrics take on new meaning after you know what the twist is. His armor 'ringing', like an alarm bell.
I have returned to this beautiful song once again because I was playing Deltarune and the song Welcome to the CITY sounded familiar; it's so nice hearing it again like that
Gaslight: Manipulates 74 heros into attempting to free her. Gatekeep: Owns giant dragon to stop heros from entering the tower. Girlboss: Able to kill all 74 heros.
tbh I don't think she, personally, killed all 74 heroes. the wording makes it seem like she's very surprised that he actually even managed to get to her room at all- surviving all the traps and monsters.
@@CharaViolet i think the princess did kill the heroes. After all, she was the one who gathered all the monsters and set up all the traps that killed 73 heroes before the current one. She also killed the last hero as soon as he opened the door by breathing fire onto him
other people recognize the part from Welcome to the CITY too! it's crazy lol. tobias, tobias, you sly fox.... ok overused but had to do it at at least one point lol. but also, i love this song. the way it was _executed_ is just so amazing. the percussion and all, it's astounding. i got literal chills at 3:22 when the release of the percussion let you know that _this_ was the final, grand moment. simply beautiful toby. one day i hope i can make songs as emotionally powerful and provocative, as well as just as awesome. and amazing vocal delivery from itoki too, the crispness(does that sound weird lmao) and tone of her voice, along with the emotion.... it's... IT'S...... epic. lol
So I know Japanese, and I think it would be interesting to talk about the difference between both sets of lyrics. (anti-spoiler space) In the Japanese version, there's no "my traps" or "the monsters that I gathered" or "I unsheathe my claws", not even the smug "He doesn't get it get it", so the listener doesn't know that the princess means harm until the very very last line. There's one foreshadowing point in the Japanese version too, the "tears are falling" being "one more drop of tear has fallen" instead, so they might be crocodile tears or maybe it's that the princess is out of tear? The window isn't tear-stained either. (Edit: "one drop" → "one more drop")
_Mata_ hitotsu = one _more,_ not just one. And koboreru is in nonpast tense so it's "one more tear _will_ fall (for the 74th's death)," so yeah, definitely foreshadowing. Actually I was surprised that the Japanese lyrics don't explicitly count 73 months or floors or minutes, though it is explicit for sacrifices. Maybe I underestimate a Japanese listener's ability to read from context. Also surprised there's no Japanese translations for the English-only lyrics. Seems a shame.
@@doublex85 The floor count and number of minutes are not important to the song to be complete. It's just that the "lore" in the English canon and the Japanese canon differs a little.
My favorite part is that the Japanese lyrics never explicitly said that it was a “dragon” that the knight slayed, it was the “cruel hands of evil” which leads me to believe that the princess might be the dragon
Bruh I never paid attention to the English lyrics at the final part and my eyes were just reading the Japanese ones. I was like "YEAH LETS GO HE'S GOING TO BE THERE FOR YOU!" and then she said that she breathes out fire and I'm like "WHAT"
Yes, Itoki Hana is the one with the beautiful, haunting voice, creating a very special atmosphere and Toby is the master storyteller. They are an awesome team.
God this sounds like one of those early days Vocaloid ballads along the lines of Cendrillon or Synchronicity or SiGRe or basically anything by Mothy. From the mixing to the lyrics to the duet parts, everything about it feels like it came from that era and that fandom. NJ you two.
Here's my take: The whole thing's a metaphor for a fear of commitment. The 73 princes are failed relationships. So many have tried to get close to her, only to fall to her defenses - her monsters and dragons. She's come to expect it, to the point that she isn't surprised when yet another is hurt. But he pushes through, not once but twice, sure that she's worth the struggles of a hard relationship. It seems like it could finally work... ...but she can't accept it. She's meant to be alone, or so she thinks. So she breaks it off herself, and just keeps on as she's done until then, 74 times now. Or maybe not. It's a compelling story, even at surface value. That's just the impression it left on me.
@@RushWheelerit may be not only about failed romantic relationship, but also platonic ones. She could have pushed away her potential partners, friends, and family and was left alone in her "tower" (which can be a metaphor for her mind, that she doesn't let anyone in).
That and she's afraid that she can't live up to others' expectations. But she still wants to be desired. So she pushes people away before anyone can get to know the "monster".
Here you go mi gente! (AMIGO?!?!?!?!?!?)
Personally, I like to believe that 74 had his shield out. Because I think the song works really well if you interpret it as a metaphor for depression, imposter syndrome, self hatred, self harm, and lashing out. 74 is someone who actually knows and cares about the Princess, where as the previous 73 were people who didn't really know her, at least not the real her. That's why 74 makes it through everything, even surviving things she expected to kill him. Because they were enough to deter the people who just liked the idea her, but 74 is determined because he's not here to rescue a princess from a tower, he's here to help a friend through something. She's afraid of rejection, but 74 already knows the truth, and he doesn't care. She's not a monster, she's a person who's hurting. It works on multiple levels, too. In the level where she really is a dragon and he really is a knight, he's able to overcome all the obstacles because he knows her and knows what to expect. The dragon didn't mortally wound him because it knew. At least, that's how I choose to interpret it.
I guess that's a simp way of interpreting it, to keep trying no matter how poorly she treats you. You're not noble for sacrificing your own self respect for the pretty princess, you're just sad and pathetic for not slaying her once finding out the truth. You want to work through all her pain and suffering because she's beautiful and your lust is taking over, you wouldn't do this if she didn't APPEAR worth the effort. So even the one who UNDERSTANDS her, who would likely not tolerate such a monster in any other form is only tolerating the evil because it has a pretty face. Hence why he slew other monsters and dragons just to get here. To me it seems like she's just not worth the trouble but the hero was deceived by a pretty face and hurt because of it.
@@starless267 no, the slowed version with the whole motif was made by siivagunner lol. The track exists in game but it's literally just the normal track slowed down, no?
I'm really impressed on how far you've come as a singer, I've been watching this channel since I came across the Kirby songs years ago. Also Toby Fox has a handsome voice as a singer. Good job to both of you!!
Okay, so basically she's a dragon princess lady imprisoned in a tower, waiting for a hero to rescue her. her kingdom is destroyed, probably by her or the dragon guarding the tower. she wants to be rescued, but because of her dragon form, can't let anyone see who she truly is, so realising that if the hero sees who she truly is (and might run away and tell other people to stay away), she decides to kill the hero. it's a sombre fate for the hero. she did not know how the hero would have reacted, but she panicked and probably saw no other choice.
My theory is that because it sounds like 2 women singing throughout the song is that there is both a dragon princess and a human one both singing about the same things but in different contexts, it could because of insecurity or the addictive thrill of being "reacued" over and over again that she simply kills the heroes.
My interpretation is that she isnt human anymore She isn't captured she locks herself away because people will care about her if they hear about the "trapped princess" so she surrounds herself with traps, monsters and a dragon to give the impression she's a princess in peril, it's a quest that was meant to be attempted but never succeeded. The more heroes fall the more heroes will come to not only test themselves but to be the hero and she's surprised someone made it through and is afraid that once shes rescued she'll just become another princess married to the hero, nothing special and fade away to obscurity so she kills the hero to keep the lie going
Unbeknownst to the monsster princess, the knight she hid against came along with a companion and the knight intended to rescue the dragon. In the end it is revealed that the knight was a mule and this song was about the first act of Shrek

is this for an anime????????????????????????????
which song?
I came back to this after hearing a very familiar tune in Deltarune Chapter 2 (Welcome to the City)
Such a good piece right here
I like how she keeps counting the fallen heros, that implies that she either finds joy in in breaking this record over and over again, or that there's some part of her that feels remorse abot taking so many lives...

"Saving the beautiful dragon from the horrible princess."
-Matt Colville
Yes perfect
Also AQ
I want a story where the horrible princess saves the ugly dragon from the beautiful knight.
Bowser rescues Mario from Princess Peach.
@Xianad Well, i suppose he technically already did with undertale, except you have to actively seek out that darker side to the game.
Its a catfishing dragon
Shawn's Legacy He didn’t do that in Undertale because the game implies Frisk goes back in time after the end credits to save Asriel and reunite him with his family.
No one got left behind in that game, they game just leaves us off before it’s over while implying more to be more poignant.

0:35 Hey, that's "Welcome to the City." Gotta hand it to Toby "leitmotifs" Fox.

Man I love how the English lyrics, while are not a direct translation, rhyme and fit into the rhythm of the song perfectly. And even "seventy three" is a perfect syllable match for Japanese "nanajuu san", though it's probably a coincidence
But Japanese doesn't use syllable matching. It uses morae matching.

Never heard of this artist before, but she's talented. Toby's great composition is always enjoyable as well!
She does lovely lyric versions of game music (plus her own songs). I first found her through her Kirby covers (I recommend her one for Grape Garden)
I always love how well the stress of the character is conveyed through the singer's voice in the final portion of the song.
Wow. Just wow.
The ability to tell a story and give insight into a unique character solely through song is a unique and rare skill.
Your work is incredible. Keep it up!
There’s a song you might like that actually tells a story. Name of the Sin by ryo
There's alot of this style, it just gets buried by mainstream songs. Only ones who appreciate style instead of relatibility hunts for the best
There are lots of songs that convey stories and ideas, but some encrypt them in and require the listener to decrypt them. "Eve" is a strong example here.
I forgot to mention. Majority of the songs of ryo(supercell) also tells a story!

tbh I don't think she, personally, killed all 74 heroes. the wording makes it seem like she's very surprised that he actually even managed to get to her room at all- surviving all the traps and monsters.
@@CharaViolet i think the princess did kill the heroes. After all, she was the one who gathered all the monsters and set up all the traps that killed 73 heroes before the current one. She also killed the last hero as soon as he opened the door by breathing fire onto him

toby. itoki. great job
Wow so beautiful ♡ (So, the trapped princess is actually the fire breathing dragon herself ? Once a knight falls the number raises.. from 73 to 74 ..)
So I know Japanese, and I think it would be interesting to talk about the difference between both sets of lyrics.
(anti-spoiler space)
In the Japanese version, there's no "my traps" or "the monsters that I gathered" or "I unsheathe my claws", not even the smug "He doesn't get it get it", so the listener doesn't know that the princess means harm until the very very last line.
Man u did a good job with ur comment
My favorite part is that the Japanese lyrics never explicitly said that it was a “dragon” that the knight slayed, it was the “cruel hands of evil” which leads me to believe that the princess might be the dragon
Bruh I never paid attention to the English lyrics at the final part and my eyes were just reading the Japanese ones. I was like "YEAH LETS GO HE'S GOING TO BE THERE FOR YOU!" and then she said that she breathes out fire and I'm like "WHAT"
Tobyさん協力とかやばすぎやろ
guys i get it toby's writing is awesome but he didn't make this song alone.
itoki hana i love your voice so much and bani-chan damn that's pretty
Yes, Itoki Hana is the one with the beautiful, haunting voice, creating a very special atmosphere and Toby is the master storyteller. They are an awesome team.
God this sounds like one of those early days Vocaloid ballads along the lines of Cendrillon or Synchronicity or SiGRe or basically anything by Mothy. From the mixing to the lyrics to the duet parts, everything about it feels like it came from that era and that fandom. NJ you two.
Here's my take:
The whole thing's a metaphor for a fear of commitment.
Yea that was what I was thinking to, I think I might be dealing with a girl like that rn.
Bro had 73 exes lmao
@@RushWheelerit may be not only about failed romantic relationship, but also platonic ones. She could have pushed away her potential partners, friends, and family and was left alone in her "tower" (which can be a metaphor for her mind, that she doesn't let anyone in).
That and she's afraid that she can't live up to others' expectations. But she still wants to be desired. So she pushes people away before anyone can get to know the "monster".

I forgot toby did this.. I've been listening to this song for a hot minute now and looking up the artist lead me here.. I was like "WOAH WHAT"
Personally, I like to believe that 74 had his shield out.
I love this interpretation, thanks for sharing!
Damn i got the 74th like
Honestly this is the most positive interpretation of this song

Okay, so basically she's a dragon princess lady imprisoned in a tower, waiting for a hero to rescue her. her kingdom is destroyed, probably by her or the dragon guarding the tower.
she wants to be rescued, but because of her dragon form, can't let anyone see who she truly is, so realising that if the hero sees who she truly is (and might run away and tell other people to stay away), she decides to kill the hero.
it's a sombre fate for the hero. she did not know how the hero would have reacted, but she panicked and probably saw no other choice.
wow I needed such a happy ending this early in the morning
My theory is that because it sounds like 2 women singing throughout the song is that there is both a dragon princess and a human one both singing about the same things but in different contexts, it could because of insecurity or the addictive thrill of being "reacued" over and over again that she simply kills the heroes.
This sound super similar to the plot of "The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince" :D
My interpretation is that she isnt human anymore
She isn't captured she locks herself away because people will care about her if they hear about the "trapped princess" so she surrounds herself with traps, monsters and a dragon to give the impression she's a princess in peril, it's a quest that was meant to be attempted but never succeeded.
