We seek unison in hardship, but divide ourselves for the greater good, and it's a hole we cannot let ourselves out of, instead we've embraced it, and continue to let it change us
I thought that this song was about people who found themselves at the very bottom of their lives (for example, about beggars and homeless people) who are trying to somehow survive, having practically nothing, and who can not get out of this hole in any way, forced to drag such an existence until death. But I like your theory more
especially the tuning on vocals and the amount of creative ways kikuo uses miku to the advantage of the song, its insane how they are able to do this so well, some long time vocaloid producer cant even tune their vocals to sound natural and kikuo's out here literally using her as both a vocal and an instrument
This picture goes perfectly with the song, i dont know why no one has mentioned it, but you can clearly see shapes, animals? legs? eyes? theyre there but none of the are conjoined correctly, you recognize them but you cant focus on a single one, its as if yore eye is being repelled by the main pictute itself, and instead youre only following the geometry, a spiraling mess that is slowly creeping into a hole. its a dope picture
This song is scariest when one headphone doesn't work so you only hear one part of the song and the empty voids of the other voice fills you with anxiety
It's impressive the way Kikuo uses shortcomings of the vocaloid program to his advantage, creating an atmosphere like this by drenching Miku in vocal effects
@@_oliver_3593 I'm extremely late, but I believe OP was talking about the fact that as of today, it is pretty hard to produce natural singing voices using Vocaloid software. While some extremely talented producers can make extremely realistic songs (MitchieM for example) most of the time the results sound unnatural. Kikuo however uses the robotic sound and flow to create an unsettling athmosphere, aided by effects placed on the final song. (Another producer that does this well is PinocchioP) I'm pretty confident in my english, but it isn't my first language so please excuse any possible mistakes.
@@fabulousotaku1157 Why would you even put an ESL disclaimer on such a well articulated youtube comment. This is more sophisticated than 90% of youtube comments anyway XD
I love how as the song progresses the 'it's so wrong, so wrong' gets quieter and quieter but the 'we're so lonely' stays strong, as the characters in the song feel less about how wrong it is to bring others down and only care about their loneliness.
I think its mostly about embracing your own faults and (possibly manic?) desires. i feel like this is told from the perspective of either lovers or good friends , that find others like them and therefore abandoning morals and giving into dark desires spiraling deeper into madness. since the first lines were frustrated about god an the world (normality?). so the worries melting away and the justification getting stronger would make sense. Edit: also , since its called hole-dwelling i guess that these things were lived out in secret at first , and now they're all those people have after its ruined their lives? "we can't/won't escape?"
@@jayemover_16 Maybe a religion or a cult with abhorrent practices becoming successful?... Edit: Looking at all the lyrics again I am like 99% sure this is about a cult recruiting two new people and them getting completely sucked into the madness.

If anyone wants to know, the reason why this song gives you a beach or sea vibe is because of the steel pans in the background, and steel pans are normally used in tropical places, and they come from Trinidad and Tobago. You can hear it clearly at 4:19.
Also the use of tango/samba dance rhythms creates an undulating and cyclical pattern to the vocalization and music which feels like waves of rhythm to our ears. Also there’s the reverb added to the voice that feels like audio passing thru water or walls of some kind so you recognize it as “not sounds waves they air but something thicker”.
I tried to play this on violin once, got about 30 seconds in and though: “There’s another 5 minutes of this insane piece. I love it, but I’m not sure I can do this.”
Kikuo's addition of the steel pan as a Caribbean person really is a welcoming surprise here we're used to it being played lively and upbeat so I was glad that it was added to add a creepy atmosphere to the song
I get it. It feels like Neptune came alive for a couple minutes to remind us that there was a reason sailors prayed for a safe voyage across the ocean while the kids had fun in the shallows
Kikuo has the amazing power of perfectly describing depression with his lyrics. When you’re depressed, you get stuck in this hole where you can’t bear the live you’re living but you also know you can never achieve the ideal life you’ve built in your head. You befriend others with the same struggles because you understand each other, and you don’t feel so alone, but if none of you is trying to improve all a relationship like that does is drag you all further down…
I remember being in a relationship like that (despite never being diagnosed with a mental illness or anything like that) and I can speak with experience when I say that this shit can fucken hurt sometimes. If you're going to befriend someone with the same struggles, please try to lift each other up and help each other out, maybe even get help for yourself and the other. There are people out there that- although they may _never_ understand what your going through- care about you tons. Always remember you deserve to be loved and appreciated, and you're all worth so much more than you give yourselves credit for
I actually had something like that a while back with a friend group. I’ll be honest the good times were great, but nobody was doing anything to improve anything, and eventually everything broke. Wasn’t a fun experience, but it taught me an important lesson, which is the one you talked about.
I love all of Kikuo's music, but this song is their real masterpiece in my opinion. The heavy effects on the music and Miku (especially her "drowning" scream); the way some instruments trail off into lower notes, like a plane in a tailspin; the s t e e l d r u m s; the way some instruments and voices play on only one side of your headphones; the heavy, pounding bass underlying it all; the breathing at the end; and the melody and harmony that drags you under all the while. I can't articulate it very well but this song is like nothing else I've ever heard.
It's also strangely addicting. The drums and the scream are what tie it together for me, and that somewhat happy tune that's in the background constantly. Everything sounds like it echoes.
Under the sea, deep under the sea, you fall and fall, you don't stop falling, you arrive in hell but don't stop falling, there is only darkness after this point and yet you still know that you're falling, even when you lose all ability to comprehend what's happening you still subconsciously know that you're falling. UNDA THA SEA
The addition of the steelpans is actually what makes this sound creepier, as someone from the Caribbean it actually caught me off guard when I heard it but it adds that extra bit of a creepy atmosphere
My favorite thing about this artist is just the way that they utilize both old, underutilized instruments and new technology such as a high production and Vocaloids into their music. It sounds so alien yet familiar like a trap trying to lure you in with familiar sites and smells which is why I think they're more horror themed songs are my favorites. They give me the chills
@@itsjustdewieman I also love how he can have low-instrumental, more quiet songs as well. My personal favourite of this style is “The day I was absent from school.” Its very lonely sounding but i can’t get enough of it. Kikuo for life
I JUST realised that at 5:17 there are two voices tatata-ing, one in the left ear and one in the right, but then at 5:25 there is a breath and the voice in the right ear dissappears and is replaced with steel pans, and then at 5:35 there is a second breath, and the second dissappears also, leaving no more voices.... I'm not sure what it means.... But it's there.... And it's such a small detail, and it's so clever, and I love it. Edit: are the babies dying out??? The smol mikus??? Do they be taking their final breath?? But they're so cute😭
I love how this song slowly gets louder and faster and more voices as well as using a lot of descending notes one after the other , and even using more unique instruments further into the song gives the impression like you’re falling deeper into a hole and you start seeing more scary and surreal things the deeper you go
You know the whole light at the end of the tunnel analogy? I think this is kind of like that, but the tunnel is never ending and the light is tauntingly unreachable
i love this response, and i would like to add my own thoughts. i think of it more as a lie, that you were told that there would be light at the end of the tunnel and there would be happiness, as well as clarity, but there ends up being no light. just an endless hole where instead of becoming more light and clear (as in mentally understandable; clarification), everything just becomes darker and darker and more jumbled as you continue to fall down a rabbit hole of madness, along with other victims and lured (the people who told you there would be light). this is why the picture gets darker towards the center, and why nothing in the spiral is clear or identifiable. the mind has de-evolved into a state where everything is one and all it wants is more and more and more. ANYWAY i just fell into a deep philosophical haze ahaha
If you listen this song while wearing earphones, you’ll realize that this is a 3D song whose voice and whispers come from both sides of the earphones ...
Renno Wataru You mean there’s panning? That’s not a particularly groundbreaking or innovative technique. Done all the time. I’ll say this though, it’s sounds great when done well.
(As someone with Japanese as their first language) I always interpreted this song as a sort of a toxic co-morbid relationship. There’s a LOT of emphasis on “we” “us” and “you” in this song, not “me” or “I” so it’s like a community (the people in the hole already) is talking to you, and the way this song is written, it uses a lot of casual Japanese, insinuating they’re trying to be friendly and convince you that you guys are an equal, the same, so they’re inviting you to be a part of “the hole”. I think this song is about what it’s like when social rejects make a community, telling eachother that there’s no point in trying to live outside of the “hole” and should just give up and keep falling down the hole. Basically it’s about a toxic echo chamber and how they can drag you down with them. Edit: I know it’s a weird example, but browsing incel forums is an eerily similar experience to listening to the lyrics on this song. them isolating from “normies” and spouting toxic and self deprecating nonsense in their echo chamber to pull people further into inceldom with their crazy rhetoric. Edit 2: I also think the distorted ocean music symbolizes that "the hole" is these people's twisted "paradise" or "oasis", if you will. But simultaneously they are drowning in their own paradise (as heard with miku's drowning scream)
The third paragraph is exactly what I couldn't put into words, though, I interpereted it more as two young kids in that situation philoshising about life in that stage. Though I'm more hopefull because "we can't be in this world and we can't be in this world" means they don't feel at home in either so they might move on from the hole when they get better.
oh i love this interpretation! i often don’t like the interpretations of a lot of kikuo songs because they’re often too shallow or too focused on making a strict timelined “story” to them, but i think this really hits the nail on the head of what it could be. good one! :D
Maybe that was their intention to do that. Maybe they wanted to draw a confuseing picture on purpouse. Maybe they wanted to make it in a way that everyone sees something differently in it.
this song could b about about toxic relationships in general. two miserable people exacerbating their sadness together, it happens all the time in friendships or relationships. the image looks like a spiraling river of styx, kind of similar to how it was portrayed in disney's hercules. they feel neither alive nor dead and their emotions are so intense that they can't always identify them. toxic people often want others to feel the same sadness and loneliness as they do, that's why they're always trying to drag someone else down with them. it's an endless negative feedback loop, but that's all they're familiar with.
as someone with several chronic sleep disorders (insomnia, narcolepsy) who has incredibly vivid dreams and maladaptive daydreams, and has a hard time connecting to the real world, this song sounds like my daily life. I’m floating through, in a half catatonic state, barely registering anything around me and seeing and hearing things that aren’t there. My mind, the people inside it, and sleep are calling me in the back of my head at all times. During the night, the only time I’m wide awake, my thoughts pull me in and drag me to my knees. It’s a spiral. I’m trapped here.
I hope you find a healthy way to cope with that, and if you wanna rant, i am very open to listening/reading it, i like reading/listening to people's trauma/problems-

listening to this with headphones, it feels like there's multiple mikus all convincing me to fall into the hole with them because of how the music alternates from one ear to other, like they're all around me asking me to join. I feel a lot of the spite and gluttony of being in a hole-dwelling life like I used to when I listen to this, and it comforts me.
This is one of the most difficult songs to make an interpretation due all the japanese culture and budism references so I Made a research At first It describes two people and they somehow end dying, that it's a fact because they mentioned they fell in "Naraka" after. that one place that in budism, when someone is a Bad person in life is send to Some type of "Hell" when death comes and it's appareance is in form of network of CAVES and there are some monsters that tortures the ones that fall there(remember the song it's called pitiful cave) When the songs says "You and me, forever and always, be the same" it means they Will be trapped in Naraka forever and probably they know that they two were bad people and they are not gonna change They saw more people fall too, as the lyrics said Then literaly the song is about the experience of falling and being trapped in the hell of budism lore (remember that a great parcentage of japanese people are into budism and shintoism)
It could be a metaphor, using being trapped in Naraka and comparing it to a toxic relationship. Pulling other people into your toxicity. The reason I think so is because Kikuo usually makes songs about the dark side of peoples minds. So that would fit with the message they put in other songs
So i was qurious and looked deeper in to Naraka's.İ'm in complete shock.İm NOT hating on Budism,i respect all religions. But the things i read were blood curdling.İ will not be able to sleep tonight. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naraka_(Buddhism)#:~:text=Naraka%20(Sanskrit%3A%20%E0%A4%A8%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%95%3B%20Pali,%22)%20or%20%22purgatory%22.&text=Physically%2C%20Narakas%20are%20thought%20of,human%20world)%20into%20the%20earth. This is where i read it.Good Luck
I would like to say that the "forever" part doesn't necessarily mean for all eternity but because of how the deeper levels of naraka work that for a person to be released from that hell may take millions if years (the kalpa measurement system they used) and it seems like an eternity to those who are suffering.
@@chelronin7843 as another comments theory went- Instead of one pulling the other, they're just pulling each other down. So a toxic relationship falling farther into despair. Life's been hard on both of them and they turned to each other, but the problem is they arent the best "support pillars" for one another. They lie to themselves for a while that everything is okay, that they're besties, and that their relationship is healthy etc. But eventually ig they finally admit that it is "wrong" (as kind of stated in one lyric). But they continue falling bc they be "so lonely", and they think it's impossible to get to a better place. This also goes along with a more recent reply in this thread about how they dont actually have to be "falling forever"/ "in hell forever", but it seems that way.
Damn, this was the exact song that kept me feeling anxious. This is the one and only song that left me with goosebumps throughout the entire listen. Kikuo is a brilliant producer. His main feature is the presentation of unusual, harsh, depressing thoughts, but damn, the way he presents it makes me sit without thinking for many minutes. With his works he was able to create worlds in which there would never be truth. But nowhere else can there be as many guesses, secrets and thoughts as in Kikuo’s songs.
I feel like I'm weightless, being wrapped up in bubbles and pulled downwards to drown in an abyss as the song carries on. This song is pure magic. Kikuo never disappoints
What a beautiful time to live in, when I can effortlessly listen to music made by a completely different culture, speaking a fundamentally different language on the other side of the planet.
You are one the best horror music creators I've ever witnessed ever. The idea of being forced to meld with thousands of different unrecognizable beings, having your conciousness split apart and unable to even understand or fully comprehend anything anymore, slowly drifting untill "you" no longer exist. Junji Ito levels of scary. Whats worse is they seem to be celebrating their lonely chaotic existence, displaying an unstable denial, forced to embrace it and revel in the pain.
The first part literally describes the Ancient Greeks "afterlife": everybody was nobody, everybody melted to be a mass of indistinguishable souls. Nobody was someone, because what they were was gone the moment they died.
as someone who is an extreme introvert, this song feels like the absolute insanity that comes from extreme isolation. Filtering everyone out, only letting in those who let you self destruct. Maybe even just the way people talk to themselves after this extreme isolation, going deeper and deeper into the loneliness that you cant tell whats real or not. "were the same, the same, the same, are we not?" makes me think that its one person who has madeup friends, a madeup world, that keeps beckoning them back into the hole. Back into isolation. Like its so much better to be alone than anything else.
I’ve recently been dangerously obsessed with this song to the point that I think I’ve spent about 6-7 hours every day listening to it on repeat. It’s too good.
Kikuo reminds me of Junji Ito. Their music is like, unsettling but not because of creepy music or anything. It sounds innocent but there's always this darkness in there. And Junji Ito makes stuff creepy by presenting everyday things that have this other worldly twist. I'd love if they collaborated someday like for a music video.
I agree, the steel drums add a whole 'nother level to the song, I feel like I would be less kikou without them tbh, especially at 4:07 when the beat drops and miku screams, it makes me feel an emotion I've never felt before, like I'm dancing with a ghost in a well, the steel drums are an amazing touch in this peice of art
I like to think that, because a lot of of phrases in the song are quieter the second time they're said, it's indicative of an echo rather than a second person speaking. Because the narrator/singer is in a hole, their voice is echoing. But really, they're all alone.
@@sankyumiku and eventually , they find a patch of water , which seems to be rising . It seems to be an escape method , but as the water rises above their head , they realize that the water is pulling them further down , rather than up .
I love how this song feels like you are constantly falling, since it uses a lot of descending notes in a row and slowing-down rhytms. Constant panning and repeating words give illusion of nausiating spin, as well as occasional detune.
Listening to this many times made me realise that the song could be about how some Japanese workers live and how they might see each other as "friends" trapped inside the same "cave". I think of the cave as Japan itself or a bar where everyone goes to drink after work. Thinking more of the bar; since they can't escape their demanding jobs or Japan, they just drink more and more, going deeper into the hole in either debt or drunkness. Once they begin to be more open, they talk about their dreams that can't come true, how they feel, etc. Eventually, they discover their lives are quite alike and begin calling each other "friends" or "partners", then they start trying to drag more people into their "group" ("Are you one of us?"), or asking some friends for "secrets" ("What is the password for this world of holes?"); because more friends mean more oportunities to escape (have important contacts and you'll reach farther). In the end, they continue this "ritual" for many, many years, not reaching anywhere outside their simple lifes, just falling further inside the "cave". They keep drinking ("It's so wrong, so wrong") but they have no one else that would keep them company; even if they don't feel connected at all to each other ("It's so lonely, so lonely") and the only things they share are a shitty life.

@@_oliver_3593 maybe they meant her scream?
@@_oliver_3593 I'm extremely late, but I believe OP was talking about the fact that as of today, it is pretty hard to produce natural singing voices using Vocaloid software. While some extremely talented producers can make extremely realistic songs (MitchieM for example) most of the time the results sound unnatural. Kikuo however uses the robotic sound and flow to create an unsettling athmosphere, aided by effects placed on the final song. (Another producer that does this well is PinocchioP)

I love how as the song progresses the 'it's so wrong, so wrong' gets quieter and quieter but the 'we're so lonely' stays strong, as the characters in the song feel less about how wrong it is to bring others down and only care about their loneliness.
Star Light it also sounds like they must be getting further down the hole.
Also it seems as if there are more people as the song goes on (from "the two of us show each other our dreams" to "we're all in this together")

If anyone wants to know, the reason why this song gives you a beach or sea vibe is because of the steel pans in the background, and steel pans are normally used in tropical places, and they come from Trinidad and Tobago. You can hear it clearly at 4:19.
Yeah it makes it sound so beautiful
Also the use of tango/samba dance rhythms creates an undulating and cyclical pattern to the vocalization and music which feels like waves of rhythm to our ears. Also there’s the reverb added to the voice that feels like audio passing thru water or walls of some kind so you recognize it as “not sounds waves they air but something thicker”.

Always remember you deserve to be loved and appreciated, and you're all worth so much more than you give yourselves credit for
REAL.

@Isabella Van Ginkel thank you :))
i love this response, and i would like to add my own thoughts. i think of it more as a lie, that you were told that there would be light at the end of the tunnel and there would be happiness, as well as clarity, but there ends up being no light. just an endless hole where instead of becoming more light and clear (as in mentally understandable; clarification), everything just becomes darker and darker and more jumbled as you continue to fall down a rabbit hole of madness, along with other victims and lured (the people who told you there would be light). this is why the picture gets darker towards the center, and why nothing in the spiral is clear or identifiable. the mind has de-evolved into a state where everything is one and all it wants is more and more and more.
That makes a lot of sense! I thought something along the same lines too, and have seen a lot of this phenomenon in friend groups! :O
@@dotsubmcdoodle2959 i have too! It's just a toxic echo chamber of like-minded people haha
The third paragraph is exactly what I couldn't put into words, though, I interpereted it more as two young kids in that situation philoshising about life in that stage. Though I'm more hopefull because "we can't be in this world and we can't be in this world" means they don't feel at home in either so they might move on from the hole when they get better.
oh i love this interpretation! i often don’t like the interpretations of a lot of kikuo songs because they’re often too shallow or too focused on making a strict timelined “story” to them, but i think this really hits the nail on the head of what it could be. good one! :D

this song could b about about toxic relationships in general. two miserable people exacerbating their sadness together, it happens all the time in friendships or relationships. the image looks like a spiraling river of styx, kind of similar to how it was portrayed in disney's hercules. they feel neither alive nor dead and their emotions are so intense that they can't always identify them. toxic people often want others to feel the same sadness and loneliness as they do, that's why they're always trying to drag someone else down with them. it's an endless negative feedback loop, but that's all they're familiar with.

as someone with several chronic sleep disorders (insomnia, narcolepsy) who has incredibly vivid dreams and maladaptive daydreams, and has a hard time connecting to the real world, this song sounds like my daily life. This is one of the most difficult songs to make an interpretation due all the japanese culture and budism references so I Made a research
At first It describes two people and
they somehow end dying, that it's a fact because they mentioned they fell in "Naraka" after.
that one place that in budism, when someone is a Bad person in life is send to Some type of "Hell" when death comes and it's appareance is in form of network of CAVES and there are some monsters that tortures the ones that fall there(remember the song it's called pitiful cave)
When the songs says "You and me, forever and always, be the same" it means they Will be trapped in Naraka forever and probably they know that they two were bad people and they are not gonna change
They saw more people fall too, as the lyrics said
Then literaly the song is about the experience of falling and being trapped in the hell of budism lore (remember that a great parcentage of japanese people are into budism and shintoism)
P.S sorry, english is not my mother tongue
@@chelronin7843 as another comments theory went-
Instead of one pulling the other, they're just pulling each other down.

Sometimes I feel like Kikuo's music is like Junji Ito's art made into songs.
but even more terrifying
Trang Vương uzumaki who? Never heard of her-
I think Uzumaki is one of Junji Ito's horror mangas which is about spiral stuff.
that's one (very accurate) way to put it
this is the new "this art reminds me of tim burton" meme, ugh
What a beautiful time to live in, when I can effortlessly listen to music made by a completely different culture, speaking a fundamentally different language on the other side of the planet.
Uhh the comfort and enjoyment is so gooood today aren't it?
This is the world we find ourselves in, lads, we might as well appreciate what we can.
yeah

who needs to understand words when the story and feelings are so perfectly expressed through melody alone?
you know kikuo is dropping a banger when he brings out the super danganronpa 2 goodbye despair steel drums

The moment I heard this song, I first thought of Itou Junji as well, one if my most favourite mangakas ngl ♥️

as someone who is an extreme introvert, this song feels like the absolute insanity that comes from extreme isolation.

2:51 one of the best parts of any song ever the steel drums is one of the coolest uses of an instrument I've ever heard been given to a song
And maybe because they're going deeper into the hole. Getting farther and farther from the surface

@@ver1son WHERE
Listening to this many times made me realise that the song could be about how some Japanese workers live and how they might see each other as "friends" trapped inside the same "cave".

I thought this as well!!
