- In this episode of building my dream shop I start building an epic porch on my new RRHQ. We build a lot of porches on our buildings, but this will be a little more classy with hip roofs framed all the way around. Just wait til I install the standing seam metal...it is going to add a ton to this build like porches always do.

Ive been watching This Old House my entire life and I gotta say this is my favorite construction videos by far. Great work All, thanks for the content! Stay safe!
Wow, thanks!
This Old House ain’t got nothing on these guys! But I also grew up watching and loving that show. lol
@@RRBuildings I can model anything in 2D or 3D if needed. I can provide .pdf .dwg .drw. or .prt files. I would be excited to help.
The power of friendship fist pump...such dorky guys LOL. LOVE IT!!!
I think your porch construction videos are my favorite. Don't get me wrong I watch every video but this one turned out💵
DIYer here: I can't help but notice in these videos how frickin' strong you are. I guess my decades of pencil jockeying haven't prepared me for the wild.
Same.
They’re both not only in a physically demanding job but also avid gym goers.
Those posts and beams are cedar, not terribly heavy, probably less than half the weight of treated lumber. 😅
Try moving around composite decking material. That stuff is extremely heavy!
Same. Strong legs from cycling but that's all.
A gable centered over the door would look cool. Thank for the episode.
Thank you for fixing the audio issues of the first try. Much appreciated.
The power of friendship
Makita power tools. Brilliant! I have a whole kit that I bought 25 years ago they have been used daily, in my trade as a carpenter and not one has ever let me down
Remember Kyle u just turned 50 ! Take it easy on the heavy lift!
As soon as you said "8 foot minus 3/4 " I knew !!!! You were hooked on the outside with tape, needed to add 3/4 for center. I've been there !! Lol
The man has calculator skills!!!
I am constantly amazed at how much foresight it takes to get everything in its correct place
I know you guys do all the math and prep but you both still make everything look so easy. Makes me want to build all of the things 😂
Thanks for fixing the Audio and that's one Great looking "SHOP"!
Did you two plan this out? Kyle working in blue gloves with Makita tools. Greg walks around the corner to save the day with a Milwaukee shop vac wearing red gloves. 😂
"Kyle, you are the GOAT!"
I love Kyle asking about somebody whose good at CAD can take measurements and design a structure in 3D and give you a set of plans. I think you just described an Architect.
Although true, often time you just need a good draftsman. An architect draws from a wide array of skills and knowledge to think up and design a structure, its interior and exterior while building to codes and best practices. They sometimes need engineers in certain areas for some more complex designs. But for simple things like a porch, a low deck, or other very common project, a knowledgeable draftsman is fine for getting the design on paper. In fact, that’s probably going to do the majority of the work if you go to a large architectural firm. A draftsman who works for the firm. Honestly, they don’t get the kudos they deserve.
The perfect program for this would be Chief Architect. I use it daily. You design in a parametric space which allows you to totally see the house in 3D as it is drawn. Been a total gamechanger for my clients who cant envision their house off a normal set of plans.
Kyle, my brother is a CAD guy that draws custom homes. He can draw up what you need. Let me know
I’m a beginner and I love watching you guys build.
Stay with it, might buy a framing calculator.
Picturing Greg's mutiny I had an immediate image of him standing in that Captain Morgan pose! 😄🏴☠
"dont think, just do" 🤣🤣 facts
Yes Kyle "you are the greatest ". Looks great guys, love the extra hips on the ends.
Thanks for fixing the audio on this video. Now I'm hoping to learn something new today. You two do a great job teaching us how to build quality post frame structures. I'm about ready to go down to the county with my plans to get approval. I hear that it takes about eleven months for approval which really sucks. You should do a video about the process of approval and what it takes. That I think would really help people.
18:00 glad your thumbnail shows the answer.
Nice work! Kyle for hip measurements revise the run from 12 to 17 and no math is required for converting from the 12 run. You may know this and prefer to do what brought you.
"Sponsored by Stabila". Greg Holding the Cup and Level and Smiling at the camera was Classic! Loved It. LMAO
I really like how in depth but yet simple to understand the orocess of building along side showing and explaining the math,GOD BLESS
Amazing work as always guys. 👍👍🏴🏴
YES DUDE, a one hour video. And Im not even 2 minutes in and I see the Makita dust blower. Nice.
Wow, I never seen anything done so precise. Job well done. 👏👏👏👏👏
From one contractor to another! Great job on the porch and hips!
Thanks 👍
WOW! That porch looks AMAZING!! ❤❤
What a difference that a porch makes. Great video and tutorial guys!!!
That looks awesome Greg did a nice job.😎🤷🏼♂️😂😂😂😂
Wow! You guys frame that porch like making fine cabinetry! Thanks for all the details.
Looks phenomenal! Great job guys!
Good Mornin" Great videos like always
What a building. That porch is gorgeous.
Beautiful job that blends so well into your main build. Your detailed step by step narative and the excellent video makes watching this so informative and fun to watch. You and Greg work so well together and your video man catches every little detail of the work and fun you guys seem to have . Another super video and enjoyed every second of it. Again this is a beatiful and well done shop build. Thanks to all of you for sharing.
Dammit, I thought you were going to build it with a detail above the front door like Greg suggested. I agree with Greg in that it would look supper good.
Another great job, Thanks for showing the whole 1hr video, Great Job guys.
Mighty fine work, fellas.
Good afternoon Great week 👍👌👍
Kyle and Greg do Factory precision work . . . On-site.
You Guys really do work by the Numbers.
fun to watch…really admire Kyle accepting that last hip without complaint, i imagine Greg did too. most important, it looks great
Just Beautiful!
Been watching for years, and still learning , thank you for the great content !
You’re right the porch makes it all come together.
The power of friendship bit! That was awesome!
That porch looks perfect. Excellent work guys.
Looks great !
C’est des artisans de folie, leurs boulot et exceptionnel , bravo! 👍👏🤩
Wow, just wow that’s amazing beautiful work. Thanks for the content.
Amazing!! Another awesome video!! Thank you!!
The porch really does change the look. Very nice.
Great episode, it was nice to get off the roof. The porch looks great as always.
Been following this build for a while. This is turning out beautiful!
Master Class. Freaking sweet!!!
sweet addition to the shop!
Awesome progress guys! 😁👍🏼😁👍🏼
Very nice porch addition gents.
Awesome!
that looks sharp, Nice job Kyle and Greg.
Just awesome work.
Wish my hips were that purdy 😂 nice work guys!
beautiful hip roof
Outstanding Young Men
Looks so good.
Wow, you are really a great carpenter. Your skills are freakin spot on, and your foresight is incredible. Thanks for taking every step you take. I see so many things that I have such a difficult time with, and can see the errors that I have made and why I made them. I originally felt that you were just being super anal on how you did things, but now I see that I just never took the time to get things right. Greg is lucky to be working with a guy such as yourself that is willing to do things right.
Appreciate that man… I think I’m over anal sometimes
Very nice
HQ is looking so god AND you make it look so easy.
Very cool!
That is a master peace
You do such good work, way to go.
Well done gents!
Awesome build. Very nice detail on an already cool build
You guys rock!
The hips on that porch really make it look awesome! Those angles make it mind boggling. If this construction thing doesn't work out maybe you could teach geometry.😵💫
The bevel on the top of the hip rafters is called the backing angle. It’s the dihedral angle, which is perpendicular to the hip, cut so the top centerline of the hip is the intersection of the two roof planes.
Very Nice!
I lol’ed well when Kyle sped up himself mockingly saying, “Kyle you are the greatest!” Your occasional self-deprecating humor is one reason this amateur home contractor keeps watching. 👍
Two other quick points: 1) I love how you measure and check reference points often to stay on course-the resulting build is bang-on (no, I’m not English). 2) I priced 2” thick rockwool: way out of reach for me! Your shop might as well have a gilt interior.
Looks great brother
Gegs belt is even thight on himself 😂
"The power of friendship"
Kyle, on a completely different topic. In my opinion, you look very similar to Jake Fraley, who is an outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds. Recently, they had a bobblehead made for him and it could be your superhero action figure. It has a cape and everything because the Reds celebrate home runs by putting on a viking helmet and a cap.
Also, my brother could do the CAD drawing for you on the purlin layout. He as 30 years of experience. Let me know if you are interested. When do we get to see the radiant floor plumbing hook up?
Good cut I like it
Wow Very impressive well done
I’m always impressed with the quality and attention to details. Love the Simpson ties and the cost is a little high but at least it’s a clean look
Eccellente lavoro!!!
The porch roof is better without a dormer.
That is such a good lookin building
I watch the version with Bad Sound and turned closed captioning on. some humorous additions by UA-cam when Kyle was using the saw, it showed Music or Applause.
Masterful
I keep a spring loaded centerpunch handy for drilling into concrete/masonry. Start with the center punch to place an accurate divot for a drill bit to start and not walk around, drill a pilot hole and increase hole size as needed. This is probably overkill for a lot of general tasks but is excellent for accuracy in finish situations i.e. mounting a TV to a concrete wall and not having to deal with the bracket leaning one way or the other because a drilled hole jumped off target by 1/16th" or 1/8th"
Nice!!
Great!!!
Happy to do some CAD detailing for you.
U guys are a beast 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
👍👍👍👍👍💢💯 awesome guys.
@7:01 I was waiting for "Wonder Twin Powers Activate". LOL
