  • In this interview with Jennifer Poulin, we discuss the concepts she teaches (and has learned) with the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI). In addition to using Bri as a "case study," we discuss:
    - The general concepts of PRI and how it is different than what many physical therapists may have learned in PT school...
    - How PRI concepts and exercises can be applied in real life...
    - A simple exercise to help you breathe correctly!

    Having relatively serious scoliosis, I can see why/how this has lead to breathing issues, digestive issues, and even prolapse.

    I am a (school based pediatric) physical therapist. I have been seeing a PRI certified PT since Aug 2019 after spot treating a knee, bunion, hip, rectus ab, etc. I COULD NOT get my anterior neck to shut-off after about a month of doing PRI. I watched video after video online. The only way to get rid of the pain was to have manual treatment by my therapist. I'd leave her office, and I could breathe. I'd do the exercises in her office correctly. Then the next day, I'd do the exercises at home and my ant neck would be overly engaged until the next time I saw her. I couldn't get it to shut-off. I couldn't breathe, no matter how many different exercises we tried. My therapist had told me a thousand times to not "over-breathe" and to allow a neurological reset. I wouldn't over-breath or over-brace in her office. Your suggestion of not worrying about the inhale, to just focus on the gentle exhale and the inhale would follow, was the missing link. I would over-inhale, up into my neck, every time. When I focused on the exhale, you are right, the inhale flowed correctly into my posterior mediastinum for the first time without my neck helping. I went to spin class today and focused on the exhales, ignored the inhales, and my neck didn't kick-in. Thank you!!!

    Thanks so much for sharing this! I feel less alone and misunderstood when it comes to posture! I'm having severe pelvic problems, And back neck and shoulder pain..Also i feel that i'm not balance and don't have my ribcage straight, Breathing is hard aswell..I've been doing a lot of your video's Bri, Those do help a lot, But i live in the netherlands and I've been going to mt doctor and fysiotherapist a lot but that doesn't help and the pain only gets worse..I'm gonna look more into this! Thanks again. Much love and blessings

      I hope this helps! The 360 degree ribcage breathing, and picturing the diaphragm lowering and also FLATTENING, is such an awesome cue for both back pain AND pelvic health issues. Good luck.

      Is your jaw dislocated by dental injury or in the wrong position due to malocclusion? If so, your atlas-axial joint (c1 and c2) are also in the wrong position, and over time your whole spine will be misaligned. Your jaw, spine, diaphragm and pelvis are intrinsically connected. If your jaw is off, everything will be off. I had my jaw dislocated under general anaesthetic to get my wisdom teeth out 3 years ago and have been on this journey of discovery and healing ever since. Do not get your wisdom teeth out unless they are causing severe issues!! They are the stabilisers of your cranium and facial structure - especially the upper ones. And never go under general anaesthetic for dental work!

    Question: If I remember correctly, she said to breathe in during cat and out during cow. I have always thought you said the opposite. Does it matter?

    • @vibrantpelvichealth
      @vibrantpelvichealth  5 років тому

      I don't recall her saying that, but yes... I have always been taught (and it makes sense in the body) to exhale during cat and inhale during cow. (Cat: back is arched up toward the sky, Cow: back releases down toward the ground)

      FemFusion Fitness she showed standing up and said you want to inhale in cat to expand the ribs
