- Today I aim to shed light on the process of a cargo trailer camper conversion and unveil the amount of time and money that was spent on key items like electrical, insulation, etc..
I started with a bare 7x16 cargo trailer and (with some help), added insulation, electrical, air conditioning and more.

The guy up the road bought one just like that and put in two sets of bunk beds refrigerator microwave and air conditioner he has three Mexican girls living in it and they go off grid every weekend sometimes for a whole week or two, he seems like a very happy man....

LOL, my air conditioning just came on . I went the window unit way but tap the blue circle with the B in it and check out my conversion. I enjoy seeing other people's ideas.I bring my camper home once in awhile to just hang out in as I keep it at a storage place.And bring my pets out in it .

Hey I’ve seen a video with a camper diy and a mini split on the front. He welded in some mounts on the tongue and put rubber bushings to isolate the outside unit said it worked well for the last year. It will be the route I take as well. Covers it during travel to minimize road debris.
Hey Ben, nice build so far. I had an idea on my build (still an idea), use single etrack mounts into steel framing (the roof framing isn't strong enuff) with 2x4 mounts, on each side on the rear of trailer. Have a 2x4 set aside for cross brace (the hammock connects here) use a center mount for upright strength (this could be a 2x2 or some other small solid bracing) use for two hammock setups. This will require two solid mounts up front also. Put up at nite, take down in the morning, use with sleeping bag or quilt.
Thot of doing some netting on this setup (velcro?), leave the back ramp down in porch mode (prop up the ramp), netting will keep the bugs out on those cool nites. That's the cool part of these builds, anything u can imagine!
We did bunk beds in our 6x10. We started out with a full bed, but it took up too much space. Mini split is cool. We looked at those and decided to just go with a portable and vent it out through the floor. Has worked wonderfully. Unfortunately, it does take up a bit of space. But it hasn't been too big of a deal for us.

I have seen it on a lot of tiny house projects as well as schoolies. I'm planning to use a mini-split on mine in the near future
I just added a Whynter ARC 14-SH to my 7x14 conversion and it works great and is very quiet. My next upgrade is to use a racor storage lift to make an elevator bed so I can store the bed up and out of the way while hauling dirt bikes. I’m looking at the champion dual fuel inverter generators as well, haven’t decided on the 3400 vs the 2000 watt model, leaning towards the 3400 though.
Very Well edited video and informative. I think air conditioning is a massive mistake because they take so much power off grid, they're loud and not stealthy (if you're looking to be stealthy.) Personally I like the double fan idea mounted in the roof. One blows in on the front and the second blow out in the back. That creates a constant cycle of new air and I can vouch for the fact that fans do a great job of helping to stay cool.
I have a 6X12 that I used a set of bunk bed in, I love'em, I have a small window unit air condition 110, and I looking at getting a 2000 watt inverter generator.
I've been building for over 39 years and I've been building tiny homes on wheels for 5 years now cargo converson and stick built on a trailer I put my mini splits on the toung of the trailer but you have to make sure on some trailers that the toung isn't short. I always build with interstate trailers they have a longer toung and the height inside is 90 inches so you don't have to have one coustom built for a higher interior height if you do I build again I would recommend putting the pinkboard under the floor and use the thermal grip prong washers strictly made for pink board and screw to the bottom of the floor so you aren't loosing any height inside I put 3 inch pinkboard under mine with the prong washers and it stays supper warm and 1 inch interior then my electric then another half 1/2 insulation after the electric but I also use 1 x 2s which is acculy a half inch board on the metal studs and then do 1/4 cedar toung and groove. I pretty much build high end tiny homes though. So that's just a few suggestions. Also I would recommend putting another safety latch on the opposite side of your door latch of you have one where the bar is so n one can lock you in from the outside. I have both on mine and a key Fab door lock. Take care

I'm semi retired. But after working for myself for 25years income projects.
Better than being a greater at Walmart. Having to put up with that shit would drive me crazy.
@@davewelch1932 I'm supper busy I'm actually 2 years out before I can except anyone else or that's how long they will have to wait. Which suprizingly quite a few said they will wait. If you do a cargo build would suggest removing all the wood pannels off the walls and caulk all the seams the interstates like I use are very well built but I still go threw and caulk all the interior seams with a very good RV caulk you probably won't find it at big box stores. They do use buttal tape every where else but not in the vertical and I would do the horizon above the seams as well before I would add any insulation in the walls and just a suggestion but I would stay away from the fiberglass insulation in a cargo build and I wouldn't suggest rock wool either it's to heavy and for other reasons I wouldn't use I in a cargo build. Just remembered if you get a trailer look at it as if if was a house meening 16 in center studs height and different things like that and check under the trailer at the cross members for your plumbing make sure it will all work when you put it in. @lbialk I have heard of people doing that before in my opinion I think they are making a huge mistake. I wouldn't recommend it these cargo trailers flex when there going down the road. I can tell you what I use and have used in my past cargo builds. And what I used on mine as well never have had a problem and I live where it rains about 9 months out of the year in Washington state. This is what I would recommend and what I use it has a 35 year durability remains flexible, water proof silicone RV adhesive. General purpose RTV silicone rubber. It's for wood, metal,glass, tile, plastic. Very good stuff I use it on the interior seam and exsterior when I caulk around my Max fan and other things like the water box plug inlet everything like that but also use butal tape before just for extra purcaution. You won't find it at a big box store I don't know if you have a Tacoma screw where you live but that's where I get it. And RV store may have it. But I don't like buying things from an RV store because most there stuff is junk and way over priced. I'm not sure if Amazon has it I haven't looked but they might. I would recommend caulking every seam vertical and horizontal let it dry for 24 hours and run a house every where outside to make sure you don't have leaks anywhere and check around your fenders to make sure they didn't just put butal tape and no caulk because I have ran into that on my builds also before o would insulate anything I would check the door latches sometimes they leak as well unscrew the bolts and caulk under them before you out them back on. @lbialk your welcome and ok that's good. I would still be causious about using tape. Alot of times it will break down over time. Just don't think it's the best idea for seams Inside a wall. Alot of times it will break down over time. And it could have a tendency to sweat. Which is what you don't want. Have fun with your build. Take care.

Ben we are in the process of fitting a 7 x 14 trailer. Our bed will 60 "x 74" almost a queen. We plan to split it in half as 2 Murphy beds, one on each wall of trailer. When lowered they will rest either on legs or maybe on benches that will be dinette when bed is up.
I just seen a video where they installed a mini split, and gave us a update of a year. They said it works great.
So I’m wanting to start on a conversion for mine just to use as a family camping trailer. It’s 12’ OA so it’s small and the ceiling is short but for recreational use it’s going to be good. I had an idea for the ramp at the rear to increase the interior square footage. I want to do a bimini style fold out that would cover/enclose the entire ramp. I was going to use conduit for the frame pieces and tarps to cover everything.

I'm working on one of the same size, for a toy hauler camper conversion. My next few steps are going to be adding some solar, cabinets, and a window in the door. Its definitely turned out to be more of a project than anticipated, but hopefully it'll be worth it in the end!

I have research many bed solutions. The murphy bed still gives you good cargo floor space when the bed is stowed, but a very comfortable bed to sleep in the down position. Considering the ceiling height the bed can be built horizontally. This can accommodate twin,full or queen size. There are many mechanisms such as counterweight, piston shocks, or purchased bed hardware from Rockler to help with lift assist. Good Luck!

Front mount close to inside unit. Every reafer (refrigerator units on commercial trucks) have a cooling unit high and dry away from stone chips always been up there. A trucker pointed it out to me. I'm looking at redoing my construction cargo trailer. Haven't used it in 7 years. Worth more concerted than cargo trailer. Plus everything new. Great retirement project.
I've looked at putting in false wall foot in for utilities (electrical room) and installing a real mattress on a Murphy bed.
My trailer is a 8'6 x 16' x 6'7" high. I could go with a king size. But would trips on wheel wells on getting out. Being older it's a pain in the toes.

What type of vehicle will be towing it?? How much does it weigh?? And is it durable for off road conditions?? And a bed should have been the first thing designed in your camper.
How about a frame for the split unit mounted to the tongue above the rock and debris area behind your tow vehicle. Have a double canvas cover made for traveling by a boat cover fabricator. You can still mount batteries or propane below the frame. WALA.
@@scottgorman7166 the mini split is on the tongue itself. I have the bottom cover with a home made pan. So during traveling it’s covered and protect my the truck. Batteries and propane are in a completely different part of the trailer in my design. Batteries alone weight just over 500 pounds, so I placed them over the axle. The propane is on the kitchen side, with fresh water tanks to balance them even over the axels. The water tanks are made to travel full to counterbalance the 500 pounds on the other side
I don't have video of this. But you can imagine a medical stretcher: two poles with canvas connecting them, the canvas having sleeves for the poles. One of the poles can be easily lifted out and rested up atop the first pole when you get out of bed in the morning, reclaiming nearly all the space your fold-away stretcher bed takes up. I had this set up as a system in a van about 30 years ago and liked it fine for one person. But I sold the van and never tried to develop the idea any farther. The trick is to get the canvas taut enough but not too taut. Like a hammock, it feels better with just the right amount of sag. So you would have to experiment with it. I figured it at 85%, so poles about 30" apart for myself and canvas would be 36" or so between sleeves. You might try another fabric, something that gives a little more, too.
You might also look up "Chinese diesel heater for vans". You get a heater (only) for a couple hundred bucks. It uses a jerry can of diesel for fuel. You'd mount it on the outside of your trailer someplace and all then the combustion occurs outside your house....a duct hose would run from the heater to the inside. You can set up another hose that feeds the heater from the inside OR you can let the heater take in air directly from the outside. Obviously if you use both hoses it's hugely more efficient.
If you go with a heater-only setup you might also consider vents for horse trailers. Mechanical, manual, cheap. Gives you a secure venting system and fresh air costs ya nothing. I'm primarily west-coastal so I can do without A/C, though I get that over time acclimatization might not be enough for folks.
I’ve seen people mount the outside mini split unit right behind the fender and gave minimum clearance against the wall. Run some angle from out from under the frame to make a platform.

How do you only have 2k subs. Your videos are fantastic.
While at the Home Depot outdoor garden checkout booth, the little outdoor glass house/checkout kiosk, had the smallest ac unit i have ever seen! The little room the clerks work in is maybe 6x4 feet. So somewhere between that ac unit and a single room window unit there might be something you are looking for. A window unit can be easily removed if traveling down the road and is small enough to be Easily lifted in and out as needed.
I guess a lot depends on what or where the trailor might be going. Rough dirt or gravel roads with ruts and bumps or mainly southern, smoothly paved roads. ( Read: non-pot hole filled streets/roads. So no ginormous holes that can, and do, bust an axle!) And, can you slowly drive a gravel road to avoid the bumps and shocks or are you the impatient type that just can't be bothered to slow way, way down?
RV camping parks are normally easier on equiptment than going boondocking on bml lands.
Also where and when are you going traveling? Mid summer to desert climes? Or duck hunting near Minnesota lakes (so the cooler fall months!)? If you never get near the Mojave in July you have different requiremrnts to those who might do so. If your trailor sits in the back yard under a leafy tree and you have readily available electric power vs trying to live comfortably with 12V stored power or a generator, those things are all to be considered. As well as if you want heat and cooling in one unit.
(And here i thought i was the only fuss pot about noise! It drives me nuts, too!)
Watch the vids about rv'ers and their picks on generators. There some very quiet ones! Honda for example. Or a big enough solar setup!
And you can run a regular window, house, ac A/C unit on solar! Without going to extremes! It was either a Bob Wells video, or maybe just one with him in it! But it can be, and is, done! But the guy doing the ac window unit was on the edge of a pine forest, at a bit of elevation. So not urban, stealth camping!
So, figure out exactly what you are doing to figure out exactly what you need.
You most likely can't have a setup for each and every occasion from winters in Alaska to summers in the Florida Keys. Or Las Vegas! But maybe you can.
I'm most concerned more about going up to a month without going for more food or water. Once i set up i don't want to move, like because i ran out of eggs or bread or that kind of stuff. Or to go do laundry.
When I'm working at a site i prefer to stay put and not waste my time setting up and breaking down. So maybe 100-150 pounds of food, and 1500-2000 pounds of water for a month. The return trip runs a lot lighter, naturally. Most of the food is gone and i dump most of any remaining water.
And i may fill up with water somewhere near my destination; I don't haul water 1200 miles. So it isn't (quite?) as over the top as it might sound at first.
Murphy bed. I built one. It creates lots of open space tremendous storage space. And ease of application. I'll send pictures if you like. I've been doing construction for 40 plus years.
Im designing a travel trailer w a mini split. Going to have it at the back in my garage area w a Tesla powerwall/inverter. Cut a round hole in the back left side of the door, mount grill cover on the outside, build a doghouse shroud to send the air out through the floor. Can be done in a small amount of space just curve the shroud so air moves freely. That way your "outside" unit can be in the trailer, less chance of theft or weather damage
I just installed 2 window into my cargo trailer. Each window were 24x30 which fit perfectly between 2 studs in the wall. I did weld 2 need horizontal steel tubing to the stud I cut and the stud on the sides of the window. I seen some people use wood as the frame instead of the steel but I felt steel was the stronger option.
Top and bottom of window wood as a filler so the wall doesn't collapse. Going to be doing that with the insulation this summer.
I havent built yet but 2 things I know to avoid those top noisy expensive, unreliable acs, and those unreliable, poorly running portable ACs. I am a window ac fan.
Those top acs use about double the power of a minsplit.
Mini splits have been used in other countries forever.. very nice units
Oh, and now I have to do the research as well.
I am considering a cargo trailer conversion and I am thinking about a wood stove, and then one of those stand up AC units that have the vent tubes, and then I am planning on venting them both through the same hole depending on season.
Is the mini-split up to the task of being bounced down the roads for thousands of miles? I used a portable room air conditioner and partnered it with a small dehumidifier for all those humid wooded state parks.
Mount the mini split on the tongue and run the lines through the front wall. We are using a Murphy bed. It will fold up and in the up position we plan on having a table that will fold down from the underside of the bed. This is space saving and it allows to keep the bed made. Hope this helps.
Good notes there, John. That bed design sounds very similar to what I have in mind. It's between a Murphy bed that has a table attachment and some sort of futon/couch that folds out or extends in to a bed. Thanks again!
If you put the mini split on the tongue you need to cover it while traveling or the wind will destroy it .
@@bigdave5946 Absolutely. In fact my wife actually put a 1" peice of foam board in the cover she made to protect it from rocks that could fly up.
Mini split above wheel or platform on v-nose, with top of mini split flush with roof of trailer.
Campervan Kevin has mounted 2 units on motor homes. I would mount it on the toung with a removable box.
You can try building a custom frame for the outside unit to protect it from the weather and debris
How about a platform bed ( with space underneath for desk or storage) or 'fold against wall' twin bed set-up -or side bed ( doubling as a couch) with wood pallet pull-out extension - seen these on other conversion videos
I HAVE SEEN THE MINI SPLIT ON A LOT OF RV'S SO YES IT WILL WORK. I SHOULD PROBABLY GO OUT AND TURN ON THE AIR CONDITIONER IN MY UNIT. MINE IS EXACTLY LIKE YOURS. COLOR AND SILVER TRIM. 2 DOORS AND 2 WHEELS ON EACH SIDE. MAYBE THAT MEANS DOUBLE AXLES?
I plan on a similar build with a mini split. My idea would be to mount it on the driver side just behind the axles. I would have to weld some l brackets to the frame that would stick out to set and bolt the mini split too. Idea is to have stick out just as for as the fenders. Or mount it on the front and both scenarios cover it with a heavy thick vinyl while in travel/parked when not in use.
That’s a great idea. I hadn’t considered having some sort of removable case for it for travel. My main concern was debris kick-up coming from the tow vehicle.
My thoughts for protecting it would be 1/4-1/2 inch plywood painted with truck bed liner or made out of a light weight metal material.
I appreciate the information about the A/c unit... I would have made the same mistake. Just sitting here listening to you a rough idea came to mind. What if you installed the outside unit for your mini split inside the v nose area on a sliding drawer so you could open a exterior camper style door slide it out when in use. Slide it back in for travel
Just wanted to let you know if you look up toy hauler conversion finished there is some people that's put the air conditioners on the front you're talking about I've saw about five videos with them now they're really cool and I see what you're talking about about the noise
A generator may be minimal. as 12 volt lighting is available with automotive parts. Add an extra battery connected to auto charge. Put together a rocket mass heater with piping under floor to heat it . The heat will dissipate into the room if exterior is insulated. Water system might be installed at the front wedge with gravity fed shower tank and ground drainage for washing. Toilet can be camper size dumped at a proper location.

What size and type triplex wiring did you use for your outlets? I bought marine grade triplex 10/3 but it is expensive.
Question brother if u can answer it help out a lot. I build my own cargo trailer it’s a 6x12 but I kinda got stuck on the roof what kind of would did u use for the ceiling how thick and how to you secure it. I only finished half of it cuz I didn’t know how to come out the point of the trailer

Perfect sleeping space saving solution......glue & staple velcro on the wall (hook or loop your choice) then sew the other on to a pair of overalls lean against the wall, go to sleep. If that s not saving space I dont know? Just messing with you.....can you show us how you mounted the split system on the tongue and where the refer lines are consealed in side your trailer? Try Murphy bed folds up onto the wall if not go with a futon bed
skip the bed and go with some really nice folding cots, fold them up and slide the kayaks in there.

I’m building one to live in, a 8.5 x 24 . For working on the road, installing basketball courts. Also with a small music studio. I’m building an insulated wall to allow 6’ deep tool storage at rear ramp door, but a bed platform above it at 48” high. Will allow me to unload and store tools without effecting temperature inside. Queen size bed, putting fiberglass shower in the v nose with toilet. Putting one plumbing wall to run shower and kitchen on opposite side of the bathroom wall. So kitchen would be in left front corner. Just had a breakup after 11 years and I decided it’s time to live for me. No kids!

I listened to this whole video trying to figure out who voice is reminding me of, they I got it: Billy Bob Thornton. You have a great resonant voice almost identical to his. You should look into doing voice work.
Consider a standard window AC unit mounted in the wall. Some of these are very quiet and very efficient and cheap to run.
A lot of camping areas will not let you stay if a window a/c is hanging outside the unit.

I know this is going to come as a surprise, but a UA-cam search for rv mini split a/c should yield some positive results. Sorry, I have other communication methods besides sarcasm, but it's just my favorite.

Been in the a/c trades for years and will say a mini split is way better .easier.to install much more efficient'- don't have to cut into the roof .

Mounted on the passenger side up high is probably the best bet.
I wonder if the mini-split issue is having it jarred arond while driving? Not sure if thats a factor or not but I dont think they are meant to be shaken a lot on a long term basis.
That is definitely my main concern - that constant vibration must have some long-term repercussions.

A bed lift system or toy hauler happijac bed. You can google or UA-cam it get some ideas, hope that helps.
The dometic roof air is the worst possible choice. Besides the incredible noise they are expensive not only to buy but to maintain. The mini split is the only way to go. I also learned that the hard way.

Not sure how must tongue space you have on your trailer. You could Fabricate a platform, big enough for your unit with a removable something like the attached photo.
Also, a murphy bed that folds up with a table on the backside. Usable when the bed's folded up.
Yea that is part of the problem- the tongue on my trailer is pretty small. And part of it it taken up my the control box for the trailer’s electric brakes.

You should come check out United Tiny House Association on face book. John and Fin hold several events a year and give classes during the even by manufacturers of products like the mini split for tiny houses and cargo conversions and schoolies.

Murphy bed, you can build them yourself with proper research and can make a bed/sofa murphy bed so you can get a sofa and a bed for as little space
I'll be putting one in mine since i dont see the need to have a set table for eating and stuff , im gonna use a pull out table or folding table that i can store away or fold in
