Man, I bought the album soon as it came out 32 years ago. Used to blast this in my room. Body Glove was the beach wear from the day (what Corey Glover, the lead singer was wearing). The footage of the girl screaming was from the arrival of The Beatles in NYC. The footage of the child being passed over the gate was when Germany was being divided East from West. The child was being passed over to West Germany. Cold War stuff!
Burnen Vernon is only under rated by the general public. He is like Niel Pert. He may not be your favorite guitarist but good chance he is your favorite guitarist's favorite guitarist. You hear Burnen Vernon's influence all over the place.
This song is basically a song about how people are blind when it comes to the corruption of government. All you need to be a leader of people is charisma, if people like you they will believe anything you tell them. And those that try to speak against this end up dying. It's showing the duality of how it could work too. Naming Ghandi and Kennedy as the good examples vs Stalin and Mussalini.
Dont know if anyone cares but if you're bored like me atm you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies on instaflixxer. Been watching with my girlfriend lately :)
the meaning of the song is you dont have to blind believe in any person. also another message i think it has is that leaders should base their popularity in actions and not speak in the meaning of political stuff or trying to convince someone. a true leader dont have to speak to convince no one to do anything. i think that's more the meaning of the song
The brilliantly written songs will hide the meaning in a turn of a phrase between the verses. Its usually so subtle if you blink you will miss it. Like how in Cats In the Cradle the chorus after the last verse changes from "When you coming home dad I don't know when" to "When you coming home son I don't know when" one word change and when you get it it breaks your heart. He didn't have time for his kid and now his kid doesn't have time for him. In Cult of Persanlity the message is in the change You won't have to follow me Only you can set ME free You won't have to follow me Only you can set YOU free You give them the power and only you can set yourself free from their power.
This band is a gem. The visuals still move me to this day. MTV seared these images into my consciousness. I believe the guitarist is wearing dirt motorcycle pants. Thanks for the amazing reaction. I'm suddenly up in my childhood again! Body Glove was a super popular brand of surf gear- it was and still is a part of surf culture. It has been a long-selling brand. Wearing ANY Body Glove back then made you legit. He is wearing a wet suit, they call it a short john. It's neoprene so you know that has to be HOT AF.
Living Colour is a great band to dive into: a great mix of metal, reggae, rock, soul, funk, and r&b. Corey's vocals and Vernon's guitar work are amazing and the whole band just sounds good together. Definitely go check out more of their material.
If you want to control a populace, keep them hungry and uneducated. "I exploit you still you love me" Great band btw. This is my fav song of theirs, but you should listen to some of their other stuff as well when you have free time.
LOL - Corey is wearing a Body Glove short "wetsuit". Back in the day it was quite popular with some folks to wear body glove items or other tight "biker shorts" type of clothing. It sort of went in line with those that dressed in surfer mode or just general "beach vibe" apparel. The bright neon colors fit in perfectly with 80's fashion, which is popular once again. Everything always comes back into style eventually. :-)
When this came out we loved it immediately; I waited for days to catch a clean dub off the radio. Like "Walk This Way", it was one of those one of those little bridge building moments in music.
I remember watching MTV in 1986 (back when they played actual music videos) & seeing Aerosmith team up with Run DMC for their rap cover of "Walk This Way'. It was the first time that we saw rock & rap come together to form this fusion of music genres. Many folks didn't know what to think, some loved it (including me) while others absolutely hated it. But no one could deny that it had changed the scene & opened doors for new forms of music to be created. Then a short while after that in 1988, we were introduced to Living Colour - the first Black American hard rock-metal band to make it into mainstream media... And they're still rocking out to this day. :-) * fun fact - lead singer Corey Glover (no relation to actor Danny Glover) played a US Army soldier (Francis) in Oliver Stone's Vietnam war movie, "Platoon"
I have always loved this song, EVERY sentence is extremely important and relevant (when this song was made and now). Also, Doc Rich, I know you love guitars, you have got to watch the video for PANTERA'S 5 MINUTES ALONE OFFICIAL VIDEO, any guitar lover would be blown away by that video. Please watch it!!
Loved them in the late 80's! And got to see them about a year ago here in SW Florida. Corey doesn't have the hair he used to but the man still rocks like 1988.
I was watching a late night show and the band was all black. The band members wore bright colors, and the lead singer had corn rows down to his ass. I thought,“ O’man, a reggae or a rap group? I learned you do not judge a book by it’s cover. The minute the guitarist hit his first chord my mouth dropped. I was mesmerized. I was listening to an all black hard rock, heavy metal, and punk band. I fell in love with them. I learned the lead singer’s favorite band was Led Zeppelin. I could not wait to run out and buy their album. I love “ Living Colour.” I told people while I was in the US Navy there are two things that will stop racism beautiful women and good music, and no one disagreed with me. Great 👍🏻 reaction!! They were styling & profiling 😂 for back then!! I think he was wearing a Body Glove wet suit! They are all amazing, & still rock out today! ✌🏻
It was actually early to mid 90s. The were just as great in person. We could go to concerts in the Los Angeles/Hollywood area for $10-25!!! It was usually 10-15 for small places where bands would just show up or give a one day notice. $25 for like the Hollywood Palladium or places like it. There no high end tickets. The front was the pit. Even the House of Blues was cheap. And for the first two years, some of us figured out how to get in for free. I would get to the venues early to be right up against the barrier, at the front of the stage but NO pit for me.
I was privileged enough to have seen Living Colour at their peak, on the "Time's Up" tour in support of their second (Grammy winning) album. It was at the Orpheum Theater in Boston, and it was the second loudest show I've heard in my life--the only louder one being AC/DC. Absolutely f*cking brilliant. It was criminal that they couldn't find a permanent place on rock radio in those days...after the buzz generated by this song and their first album, the establishment found any excuse they could to pass them over. Even AFTER they opened for the Rolling Stones. Their third album got virtually no support from their record company, and no air play on the radio, as I remember. After that, they fell off the map for a long while. Great that they've been back for a number of years now.
When the mirror speaks, the reflection lies. Is about vanity. When a leader speaks that leader dies, it is a nod to MLK and Kennedy people that were trying to bring racial progress at that time. By the way, the band is from the 80s
Living Colour has a song “ Open letter to a landlord” which I thought was funny. The house I was raised in my almost entire life was torn down to make way for progress. There are a lot of childhood memories that I can not, or will not forget. GOD Bless!
Dude! That was a look in the 80’s. Don’t judge. We’ve all made bad mistakes. Listen to the words. Take them in. You really can’t trust the media, either left or right! When you go out and just meet people, we really are, for the most part, good people. Politics gets in the way and creates hate. I don’t know your politics and I don’t care. You be good to me, and I’ll be good to your. And yes, that guitar solo is a monster!!!!
I always took the "leader dies" line as talking about how leaders are also mortal. You can't put too much faith in a leader who will not be around forever. You need to be part of the change yourself.
If you were surprised by Living Colour then you have to watch Fishbone-song Servitude they are a Punk Rock group of mid 80-90’s! You’ll be very surprised too!🤣🤣🤣

The girl against the mesh fence, I'm pretty positive that is Easy Germany. If not, the other possibility would be U.S.S.R when people where trying to flee the the countries.
Very fitting in these political times "I exploit you, I tell you 1 and 1 makes 3" since we seem to have 2 sets of facts and reality in this country these days!!
