Beautiful huge poetry - it takes several listens to get every nuance. “We made it” is still the most powerful spoken word performance I’ve ever seen it’s amazing to see where Sunni has come to. And to people bleating about “what Ted talks should be”. There are thousands of talks on every subject, go find what’s yours. This is what’s mine.

I'm reading these comments and you would have to understand a little about ifa, santeria, Lukmi. She is making reference to the energy of oshun and oya in this poem called wild women. It also represents a group of people that were brought over during slavery, and controlled stripped of religion, culture, everything thing that was them in order to benefit the majority population.

Sunni Patterson is a POET and if y’all were cultured you’d remember her from Def Jam poetry by Mos Def. More so this is Spoken Word, it’s not anger, it’s passion. This is how it is delivered. Your irritation, annoyance, and anger about this Ted Talk says more about you than it does about Sunni. Close your mouth, the racism is showing. 😚

Forgive them Ancestors. For they know not what they do. Any utterance of negativity about such an honorable offering to the honorable Orisha Oya (Meferefun) is pure ignorance, unintelligence, and mostly a shameful reflection of your lack of acknowledgement of your ancestors, universal energy, and the gateways to the Supreme Being (Orisha). Compendiously, be mindful of what you say. It shall be returned to you ten fold. ✌🏾
    P. S. Much Peace Sunni! You are appreciated Sista Queen!

The E in TED stands for something.
An idea worth spreading- just delivered through a new facet. And the fact that it's not what the organization typically displays embodies TED's mission all the more.
It's okay if you didn't like the delivery, but some people needed to receive the message in her format for it to stick. Why do you think TED has hosted so many people of different backgrounds/ fields? To reach more people and incite action across the world.
"Living strongly in your purpose and freedom" is an idea that needs all the help it can be get, and if someome wants to convey that message through strong words and symbolic dance, its okay.
Your typical tech/design programming return momentarily...

So strong and powerful; I’m a wild woman and this depicts so deeply how you want to be fully loved but not caged, tamed and formed into your partners ideal of who a woman should be. A wild woman is a spark of life that shouldn’t be put out though many try and the only person who can handle one is a partner who can be an equal and no make a wild woman feel small or gravel, bc we need to respect who we are with. She said so much here that embodies that. True entertainment in the “E” of TED

Most of the white people in these kind of comment sections in TED videos are a mix of Reddit fanboys and alt-right nerds who would never have the guts to say the majority of the stuff they say online in real life. Whining on and on about what TED has become as if it was their organisation that they founded in the first place - the curators at TED can and will do whatever they like & you can whine all you like, dislike, comment negatively, but the fact is that TED contains a bunch of amazing videos. If it's not for you, then just move on, but you don't have to make racially charged statements & complain that TED "isn't about science anymore". TED's slogan is "ideas worth spreading", not "science videos for people who think they're smart yet still live in their mother's basement".

Its literally a WOMEN'S CONVENTION with a performance of spoken word. If actually listening to the content it spoke of ALL women. What could have possibly triggered this anti-black discussion? If you do not like, do not watch. It is not shoved down your throat but if you choose to view take this into consideration. Listen and understand despite the male ego, see that speaking praise of women is not berating men. It is sad to see the comments degrade women on top of degrading this black woman. How is it that "single mother" and "african american community performance" was taken out of this?If not by your own racism and stereotypes. Re-watch. Learn that this is not always about you. See the bigger picture. Such a beautiful poem, performed by a powerful voice. Don't mask intimidation with discontentment. Be blessed.

Haha, I apologise I muddied the waters with my comment. It is just a sure way to get replies.
What I was trying to convey is that it seems to me that people like to just bully these kind of performers and it further prolongs racial tensions. Even if it is not intented. Just look at the people that liked this performance. they just don't see that the criticism is not aimed at the race or gender. So my suggestion is that you try to make it more clear what you are criticizing and have more compassion.

It’s all about providing another perspective. It’s about being exposed to something different. It’s about empathy and understanding. It’s not all about empowerment or change! Just listen and try to comprehend. See the other side, it’s a story so just listen if you can. If not keep your negative comments to yourself. To speak ill of anything is to showcase your own dissatisfaction and shame. Just be at peace.

It's strange how many people take offense to this?? Like if you don't like, don't watch. If you think it is not suitable TED material, so what? As someone who would agree, I would like to ask: why go so far as to viciously insult?
Don't use honesty as an excuse to be mean - you have no idea what honesty means. Don't use TED as an excuse for elitism - you have no idea what TED stands for. It truly boggles my mind how so many people feel so righteous in their hatred. To those who speak so sadly at "what has TED become," I would like to ask: do you embody what TED is? Your pathetic complaints here, are they educational, positive, moving? Are they insightful, thoughtful, powerful, or heartfelt? Or or they just that - pathetic complaints?

This is poetry, interprative dance, and performance art - not a lecture, debate, or intellectual discourse. And btw what's "Ted Women" if not privileged, exclusionary, and sexist? Are women justified in sexism, where others are not? How would people feel about "Ted Men", where we dance and read poetry about hypergamy, infidelity, bad mothers, and divorce court? Let's keep it real peeps, and actually be part of the solution rather than pretending via selfish narcissistic denial.

This is something you would expect to see in a black neighbourhood community centre performed by artist wannabie single mothers, not on TED.

How about you read TED's description of itself? Or is it easier to wallow in your whimsy?

Are you black.. how do you know what to expect to see in a black neighbourhood community centre? You know what black, white, pink or blue that is a *stupid* comment 🙄.. some might even say downright racist, internalised or otherwise 😠

Obviously human. The dancer must have spent years of her life making her body flexible and refining those moves. For the narrator, body modification is a thing. What made you ask such an asinine question? What do you think they are?
