My carrier docked in Toulon France for two maintenance periods while deployed in the Med. I loved the people, the food, the landscape and the obvious bond shared between our two countries. One of my shipmates even hid a French woman on our ship and we took her to sea. He got in trouble, but they fell in love, married and are still together.

Good to see our French allies training with the U.S. Navy. Indeed there is a special relationship between the United States and France from the days of the Marquis de Lafayette and our own American Revolution. I remember operating in the Northern Arabian Gulf when the Clemenceau CVBG was there back in the 80s. Super Entendard was still the front line Naval Fighter then with Rafael still in development. Vive Le France!
Back in the 80's I served on the aircraft carrier Clemenceau. The Super Étendard was the front line naval fighter with the F8 (FN) Crusader at this time.
I love seeing this cooperation. So many Americans forget the role the French played in the American revolution. The French also supplied armament to the American revolutionists and also engaged the British in the eastern Atlantic, limiting the ability of the British to supply their troops in North America.

They, in fact, defeated the British in battles that took place in Baton Rouge, LA, Mobile, AL, and Pensacola FL. The English had many enemies at the time and it was a case of "an enemy of my enemy is my friend." It is true that France lent the most help, and the Continentals most likely would not have succeeded without them.
The French and the USA have been allies for over 2 centuries. Okay we are like brothers, we fight and get ugly with each other. I will always be proud to call the French brothers!
French Navy has a little history inter-operating with American armed forces. Anyone old enough to remember the "Yorktown 1781" exercises? I think the British were invited to that one too (they played the red team).
I'd imagine landing on that deck was pretty luxurious for the French aviators. I also like how they called it Chesapeake 2018, which I imagine alludes to the Battle of the Chesapeake during the revolutionary war, where the French navy beat back the British attempt to reinforce, forcing Cornwallis to surrender at Yorktown.

I wish they went with a CATOBAR type Carrier and the Navies F-35C it would have been a better Carrier plus with E-2D Hawkeyes for AEW in stead of a far less capable Helo and the F-35C is Cheaper, less complex, more wing area, probably handling, range and of course real "Cross-decking" with the USN and France during training and War !!! Interesting interview about a very unique exercise. I wouldn't normally hear about this in the Australian media, except if the exercise occurred near Australia and included ADF personnel.
I have heard on french tv that the french squadron was fully integrated on the US carrier and forced to intervene if the US carrier was attacked . They had the same rule of intervention than a US squadron . They had the same military role even if it was a training .

The aircraft cannot aerial refuel and the range would likely be too great on internal fuel. Perhaps the Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland route was flown instead. It was also apparent that the French Rafale fighter cannot fold its wings, unlike the USN Super Hornet, to reduce its space requirements in the hangar deck on the USS Bush.
I was NAS Oceana when the Rafale's came in. They had two formations of six along with the Airbuses. IIRC the E-2 was there a few days ahead of the Rafales. The whole deal was really cool. Got to meet one of the French E-2 guys at Fentress while I was with VFA-31,VFA-87 and VAW-124. The Rafales had a cool calling too, Quick Silver. Oh the first thing the French did when they arrived was to present our guys with reefs out of respect. VFA-213 lost a crew in Key West and the French knew about it. Vive La France!

As someone who spent 11 yrs in the US army (2000-2011) with 2 tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, most people have no idea how HUGE the US military really is and that the US military host thousands of ally pilots and soldiers to come train in the US. Most poeple don't realize that the majority of fighter pilots outside the US come to the US for more advanced training. The US also will sent some units to train with allies to learn how to work with them. In my time in the US army I have trained with the South Koreans, Brits and Germans. I will say this, I was very surprised to see that the US is letting non-US aircraft land on a US aircraft carrier. But I'm not surprised it's the French considering their carrier is designed and operates like a US aircraft carrier. I have heard of ally pilots being part of an US Navy air wing and flying US navy aircraft while stationed aboard a US aircraft carrier, just never heard of a non US aircraft landing on an US carrier.
MississippiRebel : during deployment, like in Indian Ocean, the US Navy and French Navy practice cross deck. Rafale trap on US carrier and Hornet & Super Hornet trap on Charles de Gaulle. Yet the Super Hornet could not operate at maximum load from French Carrier, it’s heavier and our catapult are shorter.
US Marine Corps Aviators were part of the UK's Carrier Strike Group 21 on board HMS QE this past summer. It was the first time that US Warplanes had taken off the deck of a foreign carrier to conduct bombing missions.

CDG isn't , at all, underpowered. The reactors aren't even used at full capacity. The design is good, and have a unique system to stabilized the ship when sea is rough. The angar is as big as the new UK Queen Elisabeth. and more capable (jets with heavy payload and more range, advanced hawkeye, nuclear weapons etc.. Also the ship as weapons)
N.A.T.O. augmenting U.S.A. forces requires integration and interoperability. DeGaulle didn't want to be part of N.A.T.O. so it is fairly recently that the two nations have been trying to coordinate their strategic assets, which is a gradual feeling out process especially since France works with Russia. I think it was our coercing France not to sell the Mistral-class Amphibious Assault Ships to Russia, which led to this point, because if France had sold them those ships then it would have led to Russia using its designs in the development of the Shtorm Aircraft Carrier project (Storm Project 23000E ) and upgrade of the work to modernize Admiral Kuznetsov, the Russian Navy's only aircraft carrier, that began about the same time that the Charles DeGaulle is being overhauled. That would of had serious implications in Russian modernization especially if they would have tried to do a joint overhaul project.

No one fighter is perfect. Such exercises will allow each member to fill gaps and compliment any shortcomings. Both sides gain a lot of information and trust.
All aircraft have pluses and minuses. They tactics and training of the Naval Aviators, combined with the situational awareness provided by the other aircraft and sensors is what gives us and our allies the advantage over our adversaries.

The French have been in operations with US Navy and Army Special Ops lately. More so than usual. Good partnership.

At Yorktown not only did the French navy block the British navy but the French had infantry fighting on the ground with the Continental army.

As someone who spent 11 yrs in the US army (2000-2011) with 2 tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, most people have no idea how HUGE the US military really is and that the US military host thousands of ally pilots and soldiers to come train in the US. Most poeple don't realize that the majority of fighter pilots outside the US come to the US for more advanced training. The US also will sent some units to train with allies to learn how to work with them. In my time in the US army I have trained with the South Koreans, Brits and Germans.
I will say this, I was very surprised to see that the US is letting non-US aircraft land on a US aircraft carrier. But I'm not surprised it's the French considering their carrier is designed and operates like a US aircraft carrier. I have heard of ally pilots being part of an US Navy air wing and flying US navy aircraft while stationed aboard a US aircraft carrier, just never heard of a non US aircraft landing on an US carrier.

Why don't the French just build another DeGaule type carrier or buy a retired US Navy carrier?

CDG isn't , at all, underpowered. The reactors aren't even used at full capacity. The design is good, and have a unique system to stabilized the ship when sea is rough. The angar is as big as the new UK Queen Elisabeth. and more capable (jets with heavy payload and more range, advanced hawkeye, nuclear weapons etc.. Also the ship as weapons)

N.A.T.O. augmenting U.S.A. forces requires integration and interoperability. DeGaulle didn't want to be part of N.A.T.O. so it is fairly recently that the two nations have been trying to coordinate their strategic assets, which is a gradual feeling out process especially since France works with Russia. I think it was our coercing France not to sell the Mistral-class Amphibious Assault Ships to Russia, which led to this point, because if France had sold them those ships then it would have led to Russia using its designs in the development of the Shtorm Aircraft Carrier project (Storm Project 23000E ) and upgrade of the work to modernize Admiral Kuznetsov, the Russian Navy's only aircraft carrier, that began about the same time that the Charles DeGaulle is being overhauled. That would of had serious implications in Russian modernization especially if they would have tried to do a joint overhaul project.
I know they have done it with the chile navy too.

No one fighter is perfect. Such exercises will allow each member to fill gaps and compliment any shortcomings. Both sides gain a lot of information and trust.

All aircraft have pluses and minuses. They tactics and training of the Naval Aviators, combined with the situational awareness provided by the other aircraft and sensors is what gives us and our allies the advantage over our adversaries.

They managed in WWII and it worked out just fine.
