- The Jeep Commander is a great vehicle and can fit 7 passengers, but, for a young family of 6, it can get pretty cramped in there (especially while using 2 car seats.) Unfortunately, using the 3rd row virtually eliminates all the remaining cargo space. So, for our upcoming Jeep trip we purchased a Stowaway2 cargo carrier to help alleviate our lack of storage. #jeep #commander #stowaway

This was the best video I have seen on this product. its also making me want to buy this. Stowaway2 needs to pay you for this. One suggestion and if you could add to the video is this: Show the box packed with stuff.. that is the most important aspect of this presentation and I was hoping you would open the box and reveal the packed stuff as we got to the end. No worries, you could always edit the video and update I would think.

Looks like something I've been looking for. During camping trips the sleeping gear just takes up so much volume. Swing arm is a must but I love the weatherproof and locking box instead of just having rubbermaid totes. Great video.

Jeep really should have stretched the commander ( & the New Grand wagoneer's) , They could of had a jeep suburban equivalent. 6-8 passenger seating with cargo storage. But you'll have that when you get your stretched xj beach jeep project completed. Sometimes you gotta build it yourself. Keep up the great work Dan!
Agreed! I was really hoping for a Grand Wagoneer that was extended like an expedition max or an ESV. You're right tho... sometimes you gotta build it yourself!

Nice video. Was considering the Thule, but appears to be more heavy duty, and the swing arm of the Stowaway vs the tilt on the Thule seems a better solution. Now to justify the grand to get it. Thanks!

I think it might be better to have the nuts for the bolts on the inside of the box, not the outside. Just thinking it would be a little harder for someone to steal.
To loosen them you'd need access inside the box, that's why it has a lock. If someone really wanted to steal it wouldn't matter which way they were installed because they can be cut.
The hitch tightener goes the other way so the lip can clamp the lip on the hitch
As long as it clamps, either way works

I want to make sure it would fit on my Dodge Grand Caravan, but I can't find ANY videos demonstrating it. :( Your car is the closest I've found so far... if you have a moment, can you please tell me how wide the back of your Commander is, and also how wide the door is? Nice video but I seen only one problem with it and that is you cant see the tag which makes it a ticket magnet on most roads.
No not really! I ran this thing for 3 Years on trips all across the country and did not even get stopped once. It does however come with a plate mount if you're not as brave. lol

I've just bought a new box, and it's a great product, but the customer service was horrible. The box was damaged, and they won't compensate me.

License plate?
There's a license plate bracket included that I intentionally left off
$800 two years ago? Now it costs approx $1100 plus tax.
This one probably doesn't apply to you because you've got front and rear plates, but I can see a bored cop having an issue with a license plate being blocked by that thing. Does the manufacturer make a license plate bracket for it? There's a town near me that is well known for its speed traps and they nail you for 5 over. It transitions from 55 to 25 at the city limits, although I think the county put up reduce speed signs before you get into town.
yes, there is a plate mount I briefly mentioned in the closing. it comes with an LED light and it's pre wired.
I'll take my chances with a bored cop over the trillions of cameras in NYC 😎

It comes with a new plate bracket but I didn't install it in the video.. traveled thousands of miles with it so far and haven't gotten stopped yet. Lol

please watch to the end. At the end of the video I mentioned that still away includes a license plate holder with an LED tail light and it comes pre-wired. I chose to not install that for this video

A really cool storage solution but must admit, couldn’t see myself going for it over throwing my Thule roof box up onto the racks (in a manner of seconds).

This is a great solution for the older person like me. I was totally prepared to purchase a roof top cargo box, then realized I couldn’t reach what I would be packing in it. ☹️

What does the hitch clamp do? Seems it doesn't really clamp anything for safety.

Depends on the bike size, but probably not.
When I seen the thumbnail first thing came to my mind was Wally world Dad 😂 I'd say most Jeeps could use this but especially wranglers as they have no trunk space .

Hey question , I just got my trailer hitch installed ( Acura RDX) , and while installing my stowaway box , two things happened. The first thing, ( pretty much did what you did) the unit box sits a little higher than yours, and I really have to lean on to close it. Might that be because I tightened the stabilizer unit too tight? Second my electrical isn't working , I plugged everything in and disappointing , nothing is working . Do you have any suggestions ?? Thanks!
I found that I had to use a 7-pin connector because the 5-pin connector didn't work. Not sure about the way it closes... maybe you just have to break in the hinges a little more. Hope everything works out okay 💪

the only downside, it hides the licence plate, giving cops a reason to pull you over and writing u a ticket, thus ruining your vacation, ill stick with a roof cargo !
No, it comes with an illuminated license plate mount. I didn't install it. I drove over 2000 miles from NY to AL and back without getting stopped

yeah you could definitely put two large pieces of luggage in here and a couple small pieces next to them... It sure beats trying to buy a new vehicle at this point

Great review, thanks for doing this! Two questions: 1. Does this interfere with the detection of objects close to the car? I have a Mazda CX9 and it has sensors and I'm worried with this it will just constantly be beeping unless I turn the entire feature off. 2. I guess your rear camera would get blocked and parking might not be as easy especially with this extra length now behind the vehicle?

Yes, I had to turn off the rear warning tone and it did interfere with the rear backup camera. Other than that everything operated as normal. Beware of your surroundings and you won't ever have an issue. thank you for watching
