If interest is compounded half yearly, then the bank calculates interest twice a year ie once in the 1st six months and once in the 2nd six months hence 5.5% ÷2.

The formula for calculating Principal amount would be P = I / (RT) where Interest is Interest Amount, R is Rate of Interest and T is Time Period.
