Great series, Shack. Honestly, the Federation only put up a "tenacious defense" as long as you allowed them to (kind of like in the series). Once you got serious about driving through their deenses, they crumbled pretty quick. So fun watching one cube walk into 40 ships and just obliterate them. Looking forward to the continuation of 5 vs. the Borg.
you should've called Jim, Martok. Cause he pulled a Martok (getting away with like no health, which you made up for you Klinglon Let's Play) at least twice.
You can't assimilate capital ships but the holding beam deactivates their engines (and abilities I think). Also I found that building several Cubes (backed up with a fleet of Obilisks to destroy planets) really is the best way to go with the Borg.
I see Trek as thus: Several people sitting around a conference table and talking whereas with Wars it's not time for talking but shoot down those fighters! Star Trek is more cerebral and nuanced than Wars in that it talks about deeper themes not to say Wars can't be deep and thought provoking but it's Trek's domain. I'm more a Star Wars guy but there's always gonna be a spot in my heart for the crew of the USS-Enterprise D.
Remember one thing special about the borg: They adapt to all. So, it wont matter if they have armor or not. I mean, they literally were attacked IN the transwarp tube by a sphere.
Final thoughts on the match: The Federation fought tenaciously, and well, and kept you busy for quite a while until the sheer crushing OP-ness of the Borg overwhelmed them, and being a bunch of dumb AIs, the other players didn't form up to defend Yellow like you guys defended each other in the comp stomps. The Romulans and Klingons put up a pitiful resistance, in contrast.
That weird looking federation ship you saw earlier near a Klingon planet is actually the Federation's diplomatic ship, meaning that the Federation actually allied with the Klingons. So if you see a ship like that near an enemy planet, that means the respective enemy allied with said enemy. Another good thing to remember is that when you destroy an enemy, all of their mines no longer work. Their mines are still where they put them, but they do not explode (I hate mines, so I love that).
I thought that Khan's people were put into the torpedoes by Admiral Marcus as a means to keep Khan under control. Oh, and the Challenger class Federation ship is their diplomatic envoy ship. Looks like your Klingons were cowards and left the Federation to their death :P
A great game/show that could come out of the ending of Voyager (with I liked for the most part [btw the borg queen was not voyager's fault], much more then later star treks {ending was bad}). Three words BORG CIVIL WAR! Everyone forgets the that as well as extinguishing that the Borg could be beaten it also show that the borg could easily adapt and form totally new collectives if the cut of form the main one.
The Borg adapted to the armor right at the end so its useless to the UFP for protection from the Borg. Also in the books they didnt use it on a ships for normal use due to the Temporal Prime Directive.
I am aware this is an older post but I have to say this. Since when has the Federation EVER followed their own rules? they only follow the rules when its convenient for them. XD
I biggest complaint about the films is some of the changes to the way warpspeed works, In the films they say ships can't fire at warp and yet everything that happens in Enterprise etc still happens and it there were tones of battles at warp so dont understand that, I just hope the next film is about the Klingon Fed war that has been hinted at in the first 2 and we get to see Brel's and Ktingas!
I do think the Borg cubes are A: available too soon for the power they bring, and B: Don't cost enough given their power. I think the cost of the borg cube needs to be twice of what it currently is considering it's enormous power. This increase in cost would definitely promote the use of the smaller support ships other than an armada of cubes (aka 3? lol)
Is it just me or are the borg the Star Trek equivalent of the Necrons from Warhammer 40k? I think the fact that the first episode was basically Locutus giving exactly zero fucks about the fleets aligned against him is what makes me think of the Necrons and their motto of "Our smallest gun can wreck your most powerful tank", that and the color scheme for them and the borg are pretty much the same.
I remember in the original Armada Games when the Borg assimilated ships they looked assimilated. When assimilated, the ships would pop-out invasive Borg nodes and the color of their warp nacelles would change to an Erie green. They felt and looked fully integrated into the collective, rather than just borrowed. Does anybody think that the developers will ever do something like this in Armada III? I feel like it is the one thing that the game is lacking. Is it even possible on the Sins platform?
Shack, if you ever find yourself interested in the Romulans later on check out Rihannsu by Diane Duane. It's set amid the Original Series and gives a fantastic account of the Romulans their orignal more warrior centric way and a transition to the espionage centric Romulans from TNG.
In the first movie my biggest problem was how they make Kirk a captain after he stops Nero. Even if he did save Earth it seems kind of crazy that they'd take a cadet and make him a captain, and of the flag ship of the fleet. In the second I guess the biggest thing that annoyed me was that they went with Khan. I'd have rather seen another original villain then having them bust out a classic and sort of ride on that. I did enjoy both of them even with those issues though.
Shack you need to release they did follow up in the hundreds of books. And no STO is not considered canon since it is not owned/been confirmed by CBS or Paramount which the books have been.
The reboot's destruction of Vulcan caused a friend of mine to have a stroke, so perhaps I'm biased against it... but on the other hand, *they frelling destroyed Vulcan*. The old Trek wasn't just action, now it's nothing else. I know the world has moved on, but it's still abandoning the point Gene wanted to make. My mother couldn't wrap her mind around Tasha coming back in Yesterday's Enterprise...
I would like a ST series based on earth during the new movie timeline with mentions of events in the movies. This way they can have zachary quinto who is primarily a TV actor show up on occasion.
Quick, stupid question: how does one adjust the game speed? I've looked in the SoaSE:R manual, I've looked online and I can't find a single reference. You speed up or slow down the clock so often. I'm super jealous. Also, thank you for posting these! I've watched several of the STAIII let's plays and have enjoyed them all. This looks like a fantastic game. I'll have to download it this evening. Cheers!
Well I actually liked the reboot of Star Trek. Cause after Star Trek 10 it was dead. And with the Reboot they have done what the only logical consequence was. Making it more action like to attract a wider audience, even some that might not have heard of Star Trek as of yet. And seriously. Everybody of the "hardcore" fans says they ruined Rodenberrys vison. But "original" SPock (Leonard Nimoy) said in an Interview at a Trek Con that Gene would have liked the movies. And since he and Shattner might be the only 2 persons left who really new what Roddenberry was aming for. I have a Nimoy book where he describes Gene's visions as bringing Space travel to everyones home. Space travel full of adventures - to boldly go where no man has gone before. In that respect the new movies are also sort of an adventure. Only told differently in pace. I still think that new Star Trek is still Star Trek just with a different approach. And I like it. No one would have wanted another Movie like number 10, and they would not have drawn that much people into the Cinema as they have with ST 11 in my opinion.
+yobeefjerky Actually, if you watch voyager - the specific episodes that deal with seven of nine's assimilation as a child (Dark Fronteir I & II, you will learn that the Hansen's say that a Borg Cube (i guess we can call it an assimilation pattern Cube) has an internal volume 28 cubic kms or about 3086 m on each face, would be a damn big ship and would likely have internalized thrusters for immersive factors ... there is also the small fact that the sheer size of it may crash SE too.
Its not that it isnt a strong suit, you havnt done the heavy fallout research - i do believe that amplifies orbital strike damage by as much as 30% ... single capital class ships also take forever and a day in vanilla sins, unless theyre something like a Marza class which has the siege gun (6 shots at 100 damage each?)
i know I'm late to the party but hey trying to get into it. my computer pooped the desk so I can't even play C&C but I enjoy the videos. any recommendations on computers I'm all ears Captain of destruction. what branch were you Shack?
Howdy CpnShack thanks for sharing and for the non-stop oneliners and entertainment. As awesome as this game mod is, I have a pet peeve: the relative scale is off... the borg cubes are ~8x longer than voyager (or 8xvoyager's ~400m = 3.2Km?) as we see in a frame towards the 48min mark... lets suggest that borg cubes aren't larger than 12 000 or 15 000 kms ^ 3... we see in STVOY that a cube near a gas giant or nebula is suitably tiny relatively, so I don't think they get too much larger than the Command Cylinder of STOnline... the diameter of most oblate spheroids out there, such as Earth, is in that ball park of 12 740 odd KM. 3.2KM is around 1/10 000 the size there... yet we see the cube being as big as a planet in this mod... pet peeve as I said. Thats a segue into the Abrams thing; any Trek is good - we have more in common there than we have separate, and of course supporting realworld real scientists/influencers would be even better (than supporting the entertainers, who may or maynot directly support science itself), but each to their own... aside from "one man being too influential in hollywood" thing, and forgetting Lost, Heroes... pretty much anything else and eschewing the lens flare, and the exceptionally awesome ensemble cast they assembled... credit where credit is due, there is synergy in the cast! It's the ridiculous 'make everything scale-relative per shot and explain it away later... if anyone has a problem, we'll just laugh and point to the STTOS 'minivan shuttle interior/landing gear gaffe and leave it at that..." scale that bugs me. Its that "5 year voyage Ent was built 'on earth'" and then majik'd to space?!?!?! It's Urban as McCoy (I laugh in any scene that guys in, due to stuff he's said at conventions about Batman jealousy back in the day... that, and the dude didn't shake hands during autographs with anyone!) oh, and its the COMPLETE LACK of SATIRE/Social & Political commentary that the Abrams'trek' has to it, that makes it annoying. It ain't trek, its "trek wars: the new voyages in a galaxy a long long time ago and far far away..." Abrams just used trek to get his mits on the real goal, mon..eeee.., I mean, 'wars. He even brought some Wars style controversy to the Trek fanbase, by having instead of 'who shot first: han or greedo?!" to "who died in trek II, kirk or spock?!" Luckily, there's prelude to axanar and a HOST of fanmade high quality films, including that project Tim Russ was involved in recently. Don't talk about Phase II...(they didn't get the right cast, which ruins the otherwise awesome writing on that show). Dont worry, with the whole "Flashforward" treatment that Wars will be getting, and time jumps here and there and everywhere, there'll be divisions in the Wars community soon too. Expect more late Wars adopters and fans of high fantasy/LOTR to come and jump in with this one... If they did a show, I'd be happy to see the misfits of starfleet slowly defect to the maquis. Show the gritty, Prelude to Axanar style or Firefly style. 'realism' behind that facade... much like that laugh reel pointing out the rampant hypocrisy of TNG: picards lectures on '24th C people have forgone materialism and are better for it..." to 20th C people, and then Picard being an arceologist and fapping over some priceless relic, only to leave the relic behind in Generations!?!? (it also shows deeper character development for picard, after his many experiences with Q... who it would be awesome if it was all just picard being paranoid delusional...). For them to go and reboot the rebooted reboot and make a rebooted prime show... that'd be a wtf moment, and as you observe, they can't go too far beyond Voyager's/First Contact's temporal paradox without power-creep repurcussions/ looking like STOnline every episode. Spose thats a downside to that whole Joseph Campbell 'heroes journey' thing... the convergence of metanarratives and limited types of story. And don't start me on Whedon's "avengers ultimate super duper huge-mongous decades long story arc" evil plans... They shoulda just jumped into the Civil War arc, and let Brian Singer do what he does best: collaborate with the best team of actors and other directors and the various technical fields... and we'd have had a much more nuanced and 'Marvel-y" story than the crap they shovel out now... which has made at cinema 'Marvel' feel too much like "DC' Marvel used to be 'real characters' who were bildungsroman and had verisimilitude: they were 'real' people and real situations, whereas DC was a neo-Pantheon - a bunch of deities with a few demi-gods (Batman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, the robots). 90s Marvel was headed in the real-y situation, and the XMen still are true-ish to their content (though in fairness, theres a LOT of xmen stuff!) They lost their way around the mid to late naughties... DC meanwhile sat on their hands and didn't develop their franchises; they were too busy rebooting their rebooted reboots again and again. DC didn't launch a justice league crisis movie, and then do backgrounds, and then leap to 5 years forward with the one bunch of actors on a 10 year contract... they could have done the whole Kingdom Come saga and have BLITZED Marvel by now... luckily, their animated stuff returned to the Fliescher/90s feel and they did do on the small screen what shoulda been live actioned! Wonderwoman should be leader of the Justice League, and they should follow some of Perez/Wolfman's ideas and the suggestive late 80s through 90s arcs there ("leader of the league" is a rotating position held every 3 year term, with a vote and/or battle to determine the next leader. Batman is always officially 2IC and the Shadow defacto leader heh).

the diameter of most oblate spheroids out there, such as Earth, is in that ball park of 12 740 odd KM. 3.2KM is around 1/10 000 the size there... yet we see the cube being as big as a planet in this mod... pet peeve as I said.

They lost their way around the mid to late naughties...
DC meanwhile sat on their hands and didn't develop their franchises;
they were too busy rebooting their rebooted reboots again and again.
Wonderwoman should be leader of the Justice League, and they should follow some of Perez/Wolfman's ideas and the suggestive late 80s through 90s arcs there
("leader of the league" is a rotating position held every 3 year term, with a vote and/or battle to determine the next leader. Batman is always officially 2IC and the Shadow defacto leader heh).
B.O.B: Borg Operations Battleship
I like it.
The Khan thing could have been because it was Section 31
Has anyone else noticed that the AI doesn't know how to use the klingon titan?
