I still find it interesting why these machines needed a cab so huge, I remember that 5230 I was in, you could put 6 or 8 people in the cab if you really wanted to!
letsdig18 It's kind of a "luxury" feature. The big mining excavators are designed for long around-the-clock shift work loading trucks. Manufactures know that if an operator is going to spend 8-12 hours in a cab, they want room. The idea of a large cab is to give the operator more space to have a comfortable operating environment along with space for a training seat, and a place for the operator to store his lunchbox and hang his coat. Some of the larger shovels even have a built in refrigerator, sink and bathroom in the cab.
Yep, heater on, coat off, f.m. on, company radio on, gray hair under cap, big 10/4! And shotgun rider with his camera. Well Done!! Smooth operator as usual. Us older guys don't want to be bounced around so we learned not to be!!!
Lewie McNeely Hahaha that comment made me laugh! Thanks! That operator has run excavators for a long time I can tell you that! He's in his late 60s and still loves coming to work everyday.
I'm 64 and quitting my job at the quarry to go freelancing driver/operator again doing grade work and have four buddy's wanting help. No benefits any more so might as well do something I really like instead of having the snoot to the grindstone all day long. Grade work gets done and moves on and the boulder hole is always the boulder hole. Keep up the videos because I really get a kick out of them!!
Hard to think that's an old machine now. I remember when Cat first released the 300 series excavator and the 5000 series and all the glossy brochures and ad's they had everywhere.
over too quick....the older operators just got that smooth touch..you can tell hes done that once or twice.I like how your tryin to get several angles of the machines, and on them.Got anymore of that 1200 hitachi from angles like this one? another five star vid for sure...thanks Justin
arborist460 That operator has been running excavators since he was a kid. I figured everyone would like the in-cab angle! Yes sir, I have a few new videos of the EX1200 coming up in the future. Thanks!
CarolinaFarmWeld Bucket capacity's are measured in cubic yards, which is a unit of volume. Tons is a unit of weight, so without knowing the density factor of the material he's digging in its hard to estimate. If I had to guess, I would say anywhere from 16-18 tons per pass.
Always good to see the larger american made 5000 series caterpillar's still going, the 5130 even has stronger breakout forces than competing shovels of similar weight and size. The 5230 is a very rare excavator very few videos online of front shovel and mass excavator , when can we see more of the 5230 at work?
Pete Wilk They were actually overpowered for how light they were built, which was probably the biggest downfall to the 5000 Series. There will be more videos of the 5230 coming up in the future!
Edward Harold Butler Those are actually special "muffled" back-up alarms designed to reduce the high-pitch alarm sound for operating near residential areas.
I love how you captured the machine as it was heading off to work and dig. We were able to see it happen! Great video PA
JenkY 13 I figured fans would enjoy that. Thanks!

I wouldn't want to be in that cab during a long summer day! looks like a green house!

PAmining A-PLUS all the way around!!
How many tons do you think a full scoop would be?

great piece of equipment i have a die cast in my rock quarry diorama just like it
Cool, that would be the NZG model. I have one too with the metal tracks.
Interesting. Anyone know if there are optional different width track pads for that machine? They look proportionally narrow.
good lord you could hold a square dance in that cab

Edward, those are called white noise backup alarms.....and you're right, they do sound like crap.
