  • 🗣 After a long pause, I decided to start making content again, this time about various world news, people, and terms, which I find interesting, and which could teach something new to you, the viewer. There is not much content like this in Latvia, so I made it in Latvian, however, added English subtitles so everyone can understand! 🚀 I will try to make these videos as short and concise as possible.
✊🏼 In this first video, I will introduce a phenomenal, inspiring woman, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Beider Ginsburg, who passed away last week at the age of 87 while battling cancer.

I couldn't understand a word but I love that you put subtitles and that you are talking about important topics like this which apparently not have a big audience in your country 🙌🏼✨

It's really interesting to me as a linguist to see and hear how you changed RBG's name when you wrote it and pronounced it (Rutu Beideri Ginsburgu). I would love for a native speaker to explain to me in what way foreign names are changed. :) In Germany I'd say we don't change the pronunciation and spelling of foreign names - at least not with intent but just lack of language skills. :D

      Hi 👋
The Latvian orthography is very phonetic. We write everything as we hear it - even foreign names.
Writing foreign names you try to get as close to the foreign pronunciation as possible writing with letters of the Latvian alphabet only and according to it's orthography.
At the end of the name you will finally add the corresponding grammatical ending of gender and case (-s for males and -a/-e for females in the nominative) if not already present.
And the pronunciation is (always) Latvian. E.g the English /ɹ/ sound becomes the Latvian /r/ trill sound.
Thus George W. Bush becomes Džordžs V. Bušs for example
I still can't tell wether I love or hate this system 😅😂
Hoffe ich konnte dir helfen 👍
