I’m watching this six months late but this is the best live stream I’ve watched in so long 🤣 also I’m in the middle of A Feast for Crows so the asoiaf stuff was awesome timing 😁
Someone in the live chat said that Allen going on rants is like an American David Mitchell. That is the most perfect comparison. Ranting Allen is the best thing ever.
I’m so glad I found this. I finished a storm of swords a week ago and am starting a feast for crows soon. First time reading and now I feel like I got the right mindset.
I just found this one with Allen, I love watching his videos. When I first saw you on youtube, you were with a group of people I watch on here. I just started reading the priori of the orange tree. It's a long one. Didn't know fantasy would grab me so much. I'm also 56 years old and reading is my escape from the crazy world. Sorry, for saying so much. I watch UA-cam but, I don't have a channel.
I am on my quest to watch all of the "Chatting with Nutts" Episodes. 10 / 64 Progress. I just wanted to say I watched this instead of immediately jumping on The Attack on Titan - The Last Season - Special 3 - Part 2. That show is now over. If you haven't - do watch it. The themes are great. Really love Allen's overall passion. Can't wait for the other 32 times he will be on the show. :) Hope y'all have a nice Monday tomorrow - I get 4 wisdom tooth extracted later this week - so that will be fun. -_- Best Regards from Europe!
1:48:00 Stannis is the one true King! I also agree A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons were better on reread 2:15:00 damn why all this Jon slander!? 😭 I love him and Robb and Ned. They're basically all very similar which is understandable being Father and sons
This was awesome! I always love listening to these chats! I’m reading through ASOIAF for the first time after watching the show a few years back. Also ordered some Terry Pratchett and the Warlord Chronicles after listening lol
Allen doesn't release anything new so I have to watch this one, AGAIN. I rewatched Allen too much I feel like a stalker Chatting With Nutts is great btw
Ditto on everything Allen said about Discworld world. Couple other essential DW books are Thief of Time (Death #5) and Lords and Ladies (Witches #4). And to prove my point about Lords and Ladies, a quote. Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder. Elves are marvellous. They cause marvels. Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies. Elves are glamorous. They project glamour. Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment. Elves are terrific. They beget terror. The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning. No one ever said elves are nice. Elves are bad.
I will try not to spam comments but this is a wonderful 4+ hour episode. With the first 4 discworld novels I think you get more out of them if you have read a lot of the older fantasy that inspired the series. He sneaks in a lot of Easter eggs that most readers will never notice. There is a lot of satirization of traditional fantasy characters and tropes and without the proper context they go over the reader's head. The barbarian in the early books that helps out Wrincewind is a knock off of the Conan knock-offs from the early 70s. Characters like Kyrik from Gardner Fox(he wrote for Marvel comics as well and Kyrik is one of the better knock-offs of Conan). He includes Leiber's Fafhrd and the Grey mouser as well but they are Bravd and the Weasel. The list goes on and one and the early books seem like they have a lot of rewards for readers who have spent way too much reading fantasy from the middle of the 20th century. Readers like Pratchett himself was during that time. This isn't my attempt at humble bragging about knowing what was going on. I read the first 5 books about a decade ago and then the first 3 recently after I had just finished binging a lot of older fantasy. So much of it went over my head the first tie I read them. I still loved them enough to read them again but they were much more rewarding the second time. I will do my best not to comment every 15 minutes as I watch this episode. It has been great so far! (Edit: Allen said all of this in a better way after I commented)
One Piece is one of my favorite manga ever. For context, I also love Berserk, Malazan, ASoIaF, RotE, Second Apocalypse.... One Piece has a similarly outlandish humor like Dragon Ball and it's super epic. Like Allan says, the friendships are the best, the action is awesome and dude has it got the absolutely sickest worldbuilding. Also so much unexpected absurd stuff happening. I love it so much
@@thefantasynuttwork If you do you should read until and including the Arlong Arc, which is the first 11 volumes. The start is a little rough in parts but Arlong gives you a glimpse of what One Piece can really be. If you don't like it by then it's probably not for you
Great chat guys, lucky I'm on day 2 of retirement and can do the things I want to do now like read and watch 4.23 hours! of you guys on UA-cam .... sorry lol.😁
I started reading ASOIAF between 4 and 5. Read first 4 from library. Preordered 5; never read it. If I ever reread, this Boiled Leather thing sounds like a winner. But I don’t like the name. I am going to call it “A Feast Dance for Dragon Crows.”
2:27:27, I actually kinda liked Zane, not everything about him, but I feel like if Brandon rewrote some of the stuff with him now it would be cool. His allomancy is dope, and I can understand why he is the way he is (and a lot of the things he says) just by looking at his back story... it's so traumatic and he's never been seen as a person. He's a messed up dude.
Question for ya Jimmy. After hearing your A Song of Ice & Fire talk I’m wanting to finally read Feast & Dance for the first time. Is the boiled leather way recommended for the first time through or just read them how they’re written?
Boiled leather isn't straight up chronological, it holds back on some chapters to avoid narrative spoilers and keep the intended flow, more or less. I've never read the books, but when I do I want to go with BL (since GRRM split em up mainly because of the massive amount of characters). It's up to each reader though.
David Lynch doesn't do drugs. He does transcendental meditation :D I'm a big fan of his but I wouldn't recommend him to most people cause he's so different. Funny thing is, though, if you really dig into his philosophy of art, he's so genuine. He's not pretentious in the slightest. But I get why people would get the impression.
I think the pacing in Feast and Dance could be because GRRM had to scrap the 5 year time jump plan. Tbf it wouldn't have worked for a lot of the characters like Cersei, Brienne or Jaime but probably would've for Daenerys or Jon Snow and the other Starks. Also huge agree, Tyrion is definitely a villain. I love him dearly but that man is heading down a dark path.
Perhaps a small “spoilers” sign to hold up while you briefly go into spoilers. Also spoilers: Is Jon’s parentage not addressed in the books that have been published yet?
@@thefantasynuttwork Thanks! I guess I need to do a re-read. I’ve only read the first four books, and I think I read them all between seasons 1 and 2 of the show (before season 3 for sure). So the show has strongly influenced my “memory” of the world.
The cast and setting jumping in Malazan isn't jarring in my opinion. I had no idea House of Chains was disliked, its my favourite Malazan book so far (gonna try and finish it tonight). In regards to Red Rising, I'm only on Book 2 but there is a massive jump in quality from Book 1 to 2. I still don't see why it's considered "sci-fantasy" tho later books will probably prove me wrong.
@@thefantasynuttwork I went into it knowing Book 1 wasn't that great and had no plans on picking it up until later but I was going through a bit of fantasy burnout and was pleasantly surprised. Can also confirm its not YA.
I have read everything in the Cosmere up to Rhythm of War twice and Zane is without a doubt the worst character Sanderson has ever written. Allen is 100% right about him.
Might not be that far off on another author taking over. A friend said the guys who do the Expanse used to work for GRRM so he doesn't have them helping him anymore. And I don't think a reread of Dance of Drivel will change my opinion. He just threw a lot of random characters out there for some semblance of a plot because he had to put something out. The last half was just painful and nonsensical. And I did like Tigana, except for a couple scenes that were really out of place and just poorly written. Can read more of him at some point.
Oh yes you are right dan and dave totally diverged from the books way to much just like what Marlene king did with the tv show pretty little liars which was a big mistake because it they really ruined their own show's 🤯😠😡🤬🤪🥶😬
For the love of God if you ever decide to get into Berserk read the manga, DO NOT watch any of the adaptations. There is literally zero point in doing so. All the adaptations do is tell a small sliver of the full story and don't even do that tiny morsel justice.
