    I'm so happy Philip was on again. He's one of my very favorite booktubers and this was an amazing episode.
    I agree with your thoughts about goodreads/enjoyment etc. more than I did with Philip's, not that I still don't think Philip said some intelligent stuff.
    I will also voice my support for Philip's opinion that you shouldn't rate a book if you DNFed it.

    Hi Jimmy in regards to the last convo on why people feel comfortable rating games without finishing them but not books. I think when we play a game and rate it however we do, we often do so feeling as if we had understood the systems, mechanics and what a game had to offer and thus have an understanding on what may come later. Of course, there may be peaks that we do not reach, but often 50% into a game, due to how game design works inherently, it is much more likely to show it's cards in what it is trying to do and offer the consumer.
    Contrast this to a book structurally, where an author may hold their hands as to what they are getting to until the very end. I mean you can take this with toll of the hounds even, where we slowly see how all these slice of life plotlines come together into it's thematic climax.
    Now this is not to say this is the case of all games or all books, some games such as "The Messanger" where the whole genre of the game changes at the half point, there are also cases where a game is incredibly narratively focussed in a manner where, no we cannot form an opinion on it, because the focus of the game is not on it's mechanics but for the narrative it is ramping up towards. The same can be said with a book that we may pick up, get the general idea that it is just going to be a heroes journey and thus we can have an idea early on, as to what the author is going for.
    While I say this, I do feel due to the nature of the two mediums, games are more incentivised to show their hands earlier on - it's just a part of game design - and despite how amazing an ending sequence can be, we GET the game earlier on.

    I found you Jimmy when I was looking for Robin Hobb reviews a couple of years ago and I went from occasionally watching to looking forward to all of your videoes. I will miss your wrap ups and vlogs but your lives are genuinely great and I've found so many other amazing booktubers so I am incredibly thankful. The longer lives take a bit to get through but i enjoy them so much and save them to watch again especially when there are random books and authors I haven't read so I have to go back and add to my TBR which has become part of the fun. Keep doing what you're doing. Love the content and thank you so much for all the great suggestions. Also I am pretty sure I found Philip Chases' books on Kindle Unlimited but if anyone can help with Allans/allens upcoming audio book (name, author, where to find it) that would be great😊

  • @KIRI77
    @KIRI77 3 місяці тому +2

    I had to make a comment about the imagination thing (Wasn't sure how to summarise this long ass comment for the livestream) , I'm reading Malazan right now, and the way I read is I HAVE to imagine every single scene in my head, otherwise I can't move on.
    To give an example, if there is a fight scene and the description is saying that someone swings a sword this way, and takes a step in this manner, I have to imagine it my head, but ALSO have it make sense, otherwise I am not going to move on from that section.
    And you can "imagine" how in a series like Malazan which already takes a while to read, it takes me an even more exorbitant amount of time to get through it, and even getting through a few scenes a day to me is an accomplishment. I suppose I enjoy putting a lot of energy into my reading is how I would describe it. But can it get tedious? very much so.
    For someone that just reads the words on the page or struggles to visually imagine what's happening ( and I'm not tryna say this as in "Oh, you just read the words on the page? yeah us visual readers are just built different"), you must imagine an image in your head when you're reminiscing about something you've read, yes? "it was cool when Karsa did this thing" even if when you initially read it you weren't picturing an entire scene. So does an image pop in your head of Karsa, or do you just remember reading what happened? because for me every time it's visual.

    Nice discussion.
    I am more of your opinion regarding the last part about reading for enjoyment vs something else - it's still enjoyment for those who it for leisure, its still subjective.
    I wonder how you feel about Osten Ard vs Westeros (or Planetos I guess). Not at all that one has to choose one over the other but in terms of what they're trying to accomplish, I wonder which one came closer for you? Particularly the last two books of ASOIAF vs say the second and third books in the Last King of Osten Ard series - it's an interesting comparison I thought. And again, I'm just doing this because it is enjoyable to me!
    Have you read The Dandelion Dynasty? Interesting series.
    But ASOIAF is ASOIAF isn't it. I can see now why people are so eager for this series to be continued by GRRM the more I get into the lore and reddit/forum discussions. I really hope he manages to do it. 🙏🏽
