Another master class from Dr. Phil (no not that one). Not just a great historian, but one that challenges you to think about the received narrative. This is why WW2TV is the best site on UA-cam for military history.

That was Dr. Phil in really top form with this presentation. I did try to catch it live, but work really is getting in the way of watching the live episodes. Hopefully I only have a few weeks of my current contract left so I can get back to watching these episodes live again.

That machine gun pictured at 13:25 is NOT an MG-08/15. The MG-08/15 is a water cooled Maxim gun from the First World War. The gun pictured is an MG-15, which is an air cooled aircraft mounted machinegun developed between WWI and WWII. The MG-15 name was deliberately meant to imply that that existed in 1915, but was in reality a ruse to allow the Germans to develop new machineguns in secret.

You are correct. I changed the slide at the last moment and hadn’t noticed. Thanks for informing people, hope it didn’t ruin the talk for you.

Dear Dr Blood, so to remove any ambiguity did they use the old MG08/15 or the modern MG15. I ask because, these were Luftwaffe guys and in 1944 many MG 15 had been removed from aircrafts and given to ground troops. But I know that old MG08/15 were used during the second world war.So both options are possible. Thanks!

Not only is Dr Phil a one of a kind historian, he is kind, humble, and even with his knowledge, listens to what us regular people have to say, no matter how dizzy (I count myself among those). That’s why I like supporting him on his blog Fallout on Substack. One of the two PB historians that are my favorites, and Woody who’s not afraid to say what needs to be said.

I might be being pedantic (and wrong 😮) but I don't think that's an MG 08/15. Anyone know better?

Arrrgh my old school wargamer sense kept going off at the profiles of the German and Russian soldiers that Phillip was using on his slides. They're from an old wargame but I couldn't remember which. Squad Leader? Aaaaaaanyways great presentation. Lots learned once again so thanks.

Guilty as charged. Squad Leader, Cross of Iron - there were three clues in the talk. The opening slide with the Red Army soldier, the book The Willing Flesh and the counters for German and Red Army soldiers. I used ASL structure to model the firefights for the screen.

Missed the live show, which at least gave Paul a day off from my incessant questions. Two things, I'm not any clearer on the near incomprehensible differences between West-East front degrees of brutality, but that likely stems from their being literally incomprehensable. Very interesting discussion about how anticipation of their July 20th bomb plot on the part of anti-Hitler German conspirators may have eroded their effectiveness beforehand.
